EAGLE '81 Whitney Point Central School District Whitney Point, New York Eagle '81 Contents Page DEDICATION.......................................4 SENIORS.........................................17 FACULTY—UNDERCLASSMEN...........................57 AMINISTRATION..................................101 ACTIVITIES.....................................107 MUSIC..........................................121 SPORTS.........................................129 2 Dedication Mrs. Gladys Piech The Whitney Point Central School District is fortunate in having Mrs. Gladys Piech as a member of its professional teaching staff. Mrs. Piech presently instructs physical education in the elementary grades. Born and raised in the Whitney Point area, Mrs. Piech received her degree and teaching credentials from Cortland State. She has spent most of her teaching career in the Whitney Point school dis- trict. Our school system rightly prides itself in our strong physical education program of which Mrs. Piech has been instrumental in developing. Reflection on our “younger days way back when fond- ly brings to mind gym classes and the pleasant presence of Mrs. Piech. The mother of one daughter, Pamela, Mrs. Piech lives in the school district with her husband Nick. With pride and pleasure, we honor Mrs. Piech with the dedica- tion of this edition of the EAGLE, and wish her continued success in her teaching career. 4 Teacher of the Year: Mrs. Nancy Abbott By a committee composed of teachers, administrators, and stu- dents, Mrs. Nancy Abbott was selected as the Teacher of the Year for the academic year 1980-81. Presently a First Grade Teacher, Mrs. Abbott has taught in the elementary grades of the Whitney Point Central School District for many years. Her dedication and enthusi- asm are always evident in the pleasant and positive atmosphere she creates in her classroom. Through a strong sense of professionalism tempered with charm and wit, Mrs. Abbott provides the proof that learning can be fun. Faculty and students share a pride in knowing and working with Mrs. Abbott. The wife of Harlow Abbott, Mrs. Abbott is the mother of two children, John and Ann. Retiree Mrs. Iva Colgan Mrs. Iva Colgan retired this year after many fine years of serving as a school secretary. Too often we fail to appreciate the dedicated efforts of school personel who play a vital role in the efficient op- eration of the system. Every student, every teacher, and every ad- ministrator will surely miss Mrs. Colgan and her unselfish loyalty to the school system. On behalf of everyone associated with the school district, we wish Mrs. Colgan a healthy and happy retire- ment. 6 Retiree Mrs. Ruth Moyer After many years of serving the school district as a secretary in the main office of the Senior High, Mrs. Ruth Moyer has retired. One of Mrs. Moyer’s many duties was as switchboard operator, no easy task in view of the volume of phone calls the school district receives and sends. (How well Mrs. Moyer will remember snow days! ) On behalf of everyone in the school district we thank Mrs. Moyer for her service and warm friendliness, and wish her an en- joyable retirement. 8 9 10 12 13 14 15 SENIORS THOMAS W. I arrived in Whitney Point on January 26, 1980, more than 10,000 miles from my home down un- der in New Zealand, to a year as a Rotary Ex- change Student. I found the countryside and cli- mate very different from my own rugged and mountainous coastal city of Dunedin. In fact, I found differences in speech, food, school, life- style—almost everything! Exploring and learning about those differences in culture and the people behind them comprised the most exciting year of my life. My five host families — Tingleys, Schaefers, Cargins, Hibbards, and Penningroths—opened their homes and their hearts to me. A simple thank you seems inadequate in light of all they did for me. I'll never forget all the All-American things they introduced me to like hamburgers, snowmobiling, eggnog, and gridiron football. School made a big impact on my stay. It seemed funny not to be wearing a uniform and everyone seemed so sophisticated in their dress. On my first day 1 felt as though I'd wandered into a modeling agency rather than a school! I enjoyed all the extra- curricular activities not available in New Zealand, where emphasis is predominantly academic. It was wonderful to be involved with students and staff in field hockey, track, ski club, band, color guard, drama club. Interact, JCL, Chorus, and county gov- ernment internship. I loved every minute of every activity! There was also added dimension of better getting to know people involved in the same activi- ties. The ceremony and emotion of graduation was fantastic to be a part of—what a grand affair! As our school years run from February to November, I became the first person in W.P.C.S. history to graduate and return to school! I wish I could have remained to see the Class of '81 graduate too, but I'll be thinking of you all! Experiencing the excitement of snowdays, the Prom watching the cheerleaders at football and bas- ketball games, seeing Homecoming—these and so many other new experiences I had spring to my mind when I think of W.P.C.S. In learning about the American way I hope I managed to impart some of my culture of New Zealand—anyone remember the Maori war dance? Thank you all very much for making 1980 so fabulous for me! Until we meet again, God Bless America, my home away from home! 43 1981 Senior Class Officers 44 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Left to right: Tammy Ahsmann, Treasurer; Cindy Penningroth, President; Robin Alexander, Sec- retary; Dawn Enright, Vice-President. Eleventh Grade 96 BOCES Students 97 98 99 100 School Administration Graduation can be a very confusing exper- ience which presents a complicated choice point in a graduate's career. Critical decisions must be made to establish the direction each of you will take in pursuit of selected goals. It is at this choice point that students distinguish them- selves as not only having the capacity to follow directions, but of also being capable of setting direction. Therefore, we come to recognize High School Graduations as more of a genesis than the ome- ga, more of an entry than an exit, and, most importantly, the acquisition of a new and chal- lenging independence often associated with a severe consequence of choice. This challenge is the very fiber of the graduation process and not every graduate will be willing to accept it. Those who do will find the acceptance to be one of the most continuously rewarding exper- iences they have ever encountered. The Board of Education and Staff extend their personal congratulations to each of you and wish you many successes in the years ahead.
