The school year 1968-69 saw the cost of education rise to a new high as the pub- lic's enthusiasm to pay reached a new low. For many administrators it became a year to forget rather than a year to remember as they dealt with priority and evaluation, racial imbalance, negotia- tions and teacher militancy, world-wide student activism, relocation caused by urban renewal, consolidation, identifi- cation of the gifted disadvantaged, talk of a longer school year and the formal education of three and four year olds. In review, we count among our blessings our School Board, teachers, pupils and a concerned public, as we realize many of the controversial problems have not yet become our own. The first duty of government still re- mains the encouragement of education and the duty of financing is a must for the federal, state and local governments. The basic commitment should be to accept the challenge with an all out team ef- fort. We have watched the Class of 1969 pro- gress toward emotional stability and ma- turity during some trying years. For them, their senior year should be a year to remember with much happiness and much thankfulness . We all join in wishing them every suc- cess in their continuing education. Francis Mullins Supervising Principal 1 4 Mr. Hiram Goodrich BOARD OF EDUCATION District Superintendent 4 Mr. Fred J.R. Croft Mr. Gordon Glezen James Williams Clerk Marie Bird Central District Treasurer Meeting on the second Monday of the month, board members decide policy, dis- cuss the problems and business of pro- viding education for the WPCS district. Retirees Evelyn Storrs lg Helen Wlghf G90I'ge Wilcox Bernice Wilcox Four fine people who have been familiar faces at Whitney Point Central School bowed out during the past year. Mr. George Wilcox retired in June 1967 after 26 years as Vocational Agriculture teacher at WPCS, with prior experience of 8 years at Greene and 3 at South Ot- selic. Mr. Wilcox taught 2 classes of Junior High Shop last year to fill in during the emergency, until a full time shop teacher was hired. Mrs. Bernice Wilcox completed 33 years as fifth grade WPCS teacher in June 1968 Before centralization she had taught one year at Canestota, four in district schools and three in the old Whitney Point Academy. Mrs. Evelyn Storrs left in November 1968, after serving as secretary to the Supervising Principal or Guidance secre- tary since 1952. Mrs. Helen Wight was librarian at Whit- ney Point Central School from 1956 to 1968. A 5 OSMER J. BROOKS 1968-69 was a HYear to Rememberu to me because it was the completion of 35 ' years of a good life, C33 at Whitney Point Centralb in the teaching profes- sion. During that time I have made many friends, and also a few enemies, but the pleasure of working with young people . has been rewarding and if I were able to Osmer Brooks choose a future at this time I am sure ViC9 PFinCiPa1 that I would make the same choice of a ' profession. CORCORAN-A YEAR TO REMEMBER For the seniors this has been a year to remember, as they have culminated their plans, projects and high school activi- ties and now will face the future with success in proportion to their individ- ual efforts and interests. For the soph- omores the year has meant adjustment to a new school, new teachers, new activi- ties and, hopefully, time well spent in their young adult world. For the jun- iors, there has been a sense of security because they got settled last year and have one more year to go. Then they will be the first class to really have used the new school for all their senior high years. ,aww-, - ,.,,,m,f,v.,t-,,,n, 1 Tressa Corcoran Senior High Prin. Rugg Jr. High Principal This year, the second full year for jun- ior high students in their own building, has been a year for growth through ac- tion. The guidance program has offered opportunities for students to better un- derstand themselves. Greater use of li- brary facilities was accomplished. Sev- eral new activities such as dance and math club were organized to meet new in- terests. It is our hope that such growth will provide students with the under- standing that responsibility to and con- cern for others accompanies rights and privileges for self. We extend to the Senior Class of 1969 our best wishes for a happy and purpose- ful future. Junior' I-Iigh W Grades 3-6 , I Shirley Bailey Beverly Farr 3-9 JANITORS Left to Right! Due to a small but steadily increasing growth in enrollment, an extra section was added in grades one, two, and three. With seven sections, each class size has been smaller allowing for more individ- ualized instruction. Student Council STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council has gotten off to a good and prosperous year. The council is functioning under a new constitution providing for a public relations officer and separate club and class representa- tives. The council has adopted a new two-fold philosophy, service to both school and community. Many separate projects en- compass this new idea. The new student handbook, bulletin board, morning an- nouncements, student-faculty debate and refreshment stand at home games. In a program to help others they became fos- ter parents to a South Vietnamese child, ran a Kool-aid campaign for servicemen in Vietnam and collected money for some Christmas seals. Also the council has sponsored an assembly with the foreign exchange student Gunnar Friman, a Christ- mas color day and class skits. The council has also been active this year on the state and district level. The council is a member of the National Association of Student Councils, the New York State Association of Student Councils, and District XI Chapter of the N.Y.S. ASC. The council also undertook the possibility of reformation of the Susquenango League. an . ? Interact would like to recog- nize and develop constructive leadership and personal integrity in its members. Also it would like to aid in furthering increased knowledge and understanding of community and World Affairs. Under the guidance of Mr. Corteville, Mr. Smith, and Mr. Mullins the group has sponsored roller skating, and a Dental Health Week and a Blood Bank to promote community health. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Future Teachers of America, under the guidance of Mrs. Greene, was organized for the purpose of learning about the opportunities, responsibilities, prob- lems and importance of teaching, as well as the exploration of the requirements and preparation for being a teacher. To further this goal the group has partici- pated in their district meeting at Spen- cer Van-Eten School, and exchange pro- gram of members participating in another school systems daily life and a trip to the State University of N.Y. The group learned a great deal from guest speakers who talked to them on student teaching and counciling. These interesting ac- tivities have proved to make it a re- warding year. Library LIBRARY CLUB The library club members work in the li- brary on a day-to-day basis to be of as- sistance to the student body by helping them to use the library facilities to their fullest extent. They also aid the Librarian in keeping the entire system in working order. This involves the cataloguing of new books, pamphlets, magazines, and audio visual materials that are available for the use of the entire school body. The Pamphlet-clip- ping files are recent features that are being added to the library. F.H.A. Future Homemakers of America FHA goal is to aid individuals in im- proving personal, family and community living. They work toward this goal in and through their programs and activi- ties. Their theme this year, HHealth-- a valuable assetu has enabled them to undertake many varied activities. The girls were honored at being the host school for the F.H.A. District Rally in the fall, in which Dina Hronis is a dis- trict officer. Their many interesting programs deal with subjects ranging from the care and styling of wigs to films on smoking and drinking and the ways in which it affects the body. Officers from the Binghamton police department spoke to the organization on drugs and ways to help those who are taking them. The future of FHA club promises to be a very interesting one with films, speech- es and discussions on health and related topics. The club also helps provide the Varsity Club blazer available to any member. This year the club invested in camera equipment to help make better film coverage of athletic contests. Ski Club SKI CLUB Thirty-nine senior high students partic- ipated in the ski program this year. Approximately half of these students were participating for the second year. Skiing conditions this year were very good and the instructional staff was excellent. The staff at Greek Peak com- plimented the group on their cooperation and behavior. The load was carried by a few veterans returning from the previous year's undefeated team. Chris Lynch, Roger Foley and Seth Irish made the all-league team at the end of the year. Seniors leaving this year are: the three all-star members, Tom Hibbard, Bill Van Dusen, Kyle Eggleston, Ron Pot- ter, Ed Weinzierl and C. Fizette. But lack of exper- ience began to show as the team lost the last three games. Even in defeat there were some bright spots. After surren- dering 24 points to Newark Valley in the first half, the team outplayed and held their opponents scoreless for the re- mainder of the game. The Homer game was well-played, scoreless at half-time. Only at the very end of the game, wnen Homer scored two long touchdowns, was the game out of reach. Many of their in- dividual performances were equal to all of the individuals on teams with two, three, and four years experience. The future is a bright one for Whitney Point swimming. GOLF 1968 marked the first year of Interscho- lastic golf competition for Whitney Point. The Eagles entered competition in the fall with Ford Hill as their home course. All the matches were against Southern Tier Athletic Conference teams and the Eagles were impressive in com- peting against the larger and more ex- perienced schools. The golfers regis- tered wins over Chenango Valley and Set- on and had close matches with Endicott and Maine-Endwell. Low medalist this season was Rick Ko- tula followed by Bill Lewis. David Stearns was usually number 3 man with Bill Hill and Kurt Sprague completing the five man lineup. Sweden's foreign- exchange student Gunnar Friman and Neil Clark also competed Golf' GOLF TEAM-COACH JACK HALLORAN Left to right: W. Lewis, R. Kotula, D. Stearns, G. Friman, K- SPTHEUG, W. Young inexperienced players made too many mistakes defensively and offensively. These cost the team games they should have won. Doug Adamek had a one nothing shut out, no hitter against Greene, on May 28. Incidentally, Coach Birmingham reported the team executed three double plays. JV BASEBALL-1968 With a record of four wins and five losses, the team finished third in the league with three losses at the hands of Newark Valley and two wins and one loss record with both Chenango Forks and Greene. Varsity Basketball VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1968-69 edition of the Whitney Point Varsity Eagles came on strong during the later part of the season to win 10 of the last 12 regular season basketball games. This was supposed to be a rebuild- ing year for the Eagles who were defend- ing champions of the Susquenango League the past two seasons. The Eagles finish- ed third this year with a league record of 9 wins and 5 losses and overall rec- orded a 13-7 record. This is most amaz- ing after reviewing the early season predictions. Inexperience and lack of height appear- ed to make this a lean year for the Eagles. After a slow start in which the Eagles won only two of their first six games they started to move. The season was marked by exciting wins over Cortland Homer, Newark Valley, Walton, Chenango Forks and late season reversals over Greene, Sidney and Delhi. The Eagles finished third in the Homer Christmas Tournament and was awarded the Sports- manship Trophy for the tourney. Seniors on this year's squad were Bill Hill, Chris Lynch, Rick Kotula, David Gilmore and Seth Irish, who was eligible for only the first semester. Two sopho- mores were on the team this year, Jerry Marks and David Cotcamp. Juniors return- ing to form the nucleus for next year's team are Bill Lewis, Jim Poyer, Douglas Read and Mark Jones. Vvrestling WRESTLING Coaching, like any other job, is bound to have its disappointments, and this year seems to have been the one to con- centrate on wrestling. It is not so much the 3-10 record that aggravates, but rather the fact that at least four of the matches were lost in the matter of seconds only. This odd twist of fate coupled with injuries that required for- feiture of individual bouts, perhaps alleviate the disappointment to both coaches and wrestlers. The season, how- ever, ended in a blaze of glory by a magnificent win Cwhich according to all prognoses was not destined to occurj over Chenango Valley. With the loss, by graduation, of seven Seniors, the next two years will be re- building ones but the promise shown by this year's 7th and 8th graders should be cause for rejoicing in the wrestling camp. The team was led by the scoring of Dan Hust and Gary Backus and the rebounding of Doug Tillotson. JR. HIGH WRESTLING Whitney Point's Jr. High Wrestling Team had a very successful season this year. The final team record was 6 wins and on- ly 2 defeats. Wins included victories over Windsor, Homer, Cortland, E Ithaca. The most outstanding wrestlers on the team were Jack Glezen, Jeff Glezen, Bob Quarella and Dave Smith. Together these 4 boys only lost 3 matches with Jack Glezen and Dave Smith remaining unde- feated. The wrestler who showed the most improvement during the season was Ken Short.
