It has given many years of ser- vice and will continue to do so. However, it will never a- gain see the life of senior high students. May its memor- ies never dieg may its glory ever live. t h e U P S T A I R C A S E I D O W N w 3 The dawn will always oorne You sit and ponder the gloom Of the night of ignorance, And you fear the increasing doom Like one held in a mystic trance What hope is there for these Who sit and dream, or sleep? What remedy, what ease For the secrets that they keep? A child then comes to you, One for whom you fear, And you try a concept new. He understandsg it's clear! It passes evenly---minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year. Time is precious because the minutes and years that pass can never return. We travel this road but once, and we must go on with time, no matter what we put into it,or what we idle away. It is ours for our span of life, ours to waste or to improve--to leave behind a scar, or a light to brighten the lives of others. Now, with youth on your side,deve1op the ability to do the thing you have to do when it ought to be done, whether you like it or notg this is the first lesson to be learned. Francis Mullins SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL CD'F'Fice In looking back on these years, we will remember the Class of 1966 was the last one to graduate from the main school. Memories of crowded halls, study halls in the cafeteria and auditorium, double assembly programs because of too many students, hundreds trying to eat lunch through the din of noise in the cafeteria, and overflowing crowds at basketball games, will remind us of certain phases of student life. But what of the future? A new high school build- ing will bring about greater freedom and more op- portunites for a fuller school experience for both junior and senior high students. New shops, lab- oratories, library and other facilities will help to insure an improved program for the upper class- men. The junior high school will Hstretch its armsn and breathe a sigh of relief as it plans for additional courses and activities. Just as the opportunities for succeeding classes will be heightened, so will you,the Class of 1966, have new hopes and aspirations as you plan the next step of your life. My best wishes for a most happy and successful adventure go with you. John V. Rugg HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL The Class of 1937 had the distinct honor of being the first class to graduate from the new Whitney Point Central School building which had a total enrollment of 1011 pupils in grades K-12. There were 38 members of the class of 1937 and at that time, strangely enough, there were 38 members of the teaching staff for grades K-12. At the present time ll of those teachers are still working here. The Class of 1966 will have the pleasure of being the last class to graduate from the building that was so great in 1937. The Class of 1967 will be graduated from our new senior high school. The teaching staff now numbers 96 and we have an en- rollment of 1960 pupils. The old senior high school holds many memories for both pupils and teachers but all of us are looking forward to the use of the fine new facilities thus provided so that our student body may have the latest and best in educational equipment and buil- dings. Osmer Brooks VICE PRINCIPAL 7 Mrs. Ruth Moyer Office Clerk Receptionist Mrs. Iva Colgan Secretary CJf Fioe Staffs Mrs. Evelyn Storrs Secretary--Guidance Miss Virginia Hill Account Clerk There have been many years of close co- operation between the Elementary Grades and High School in the Whitney Point Central District. The first link was broken when the Caryl E. Adams School was built and 21 primary rooms left the Central Building. Soon every available room in both buildings filled. Now, we are looking ahead to the completion of and new high school. We expect then, to have available space in the old central building so that in the future we can extend the elementary curriculum to in- clude a library, art, a special remedial reading program, and other special ser- vices to improve our school. It's a hot fudge sundae Topped with lots of whipped cream, Or a good cup of coffee, Or the grass turning green. Happiness is a marching band, Glory blowin' in the breeze When summer doldrums finally end And there's color in the trees. It's hearing the chapel choir sing, And it's praying on your knees. Happiniss is a Senior With memories old and high hopes new. It's a summer day in June With diplomas, and tears, too. It's the valedictorian saying: Uwe bid farewell to you.H La Verte 18 X, f, A x 145-A N it X XX X 174 ,J 7 f QNA N YIB ww, img Q ju m x? if , f . iw X X i w' ZJJYLK j A NX 'lvf Lux A f ui H XX gf ' 1 gg:-:7 v f!f I XXX jf iff AA fg .Q xxx-Qi! Eduardo Toral of Quito,Equador arrived in Whit- ney Point in Septemberg Brad Barker of Gladstone, Queens- land Australia came here in January 1966. Bill, you explain. You speak the best English. Brad Barker is the holder of a Rotary Inter- national Scholarship. Having completed high school,he is planning to study pharmaceutical science at the University of Queensland so he will be able to take over his father's bus- iness. The elder of his two sisters is a chemist and the younger is a ballerina with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Brad enjoys sports especially rugby and swimming. During the Australian hunting season he has gone after kangaroos and wild ducks. Snow was a new ex- perience, and the cold weather was quite a change. '9af5 gg 123 Q37 ?f., ,,., -55 '..' He lived with a family of eight in Manizales. Despite the fact that he was living at an altitude of about 7,000 feet, he found the people very warm and friendly. The Ballad of' -John and Lu Once upon a hill green, green, There lived a maid of seventeen. For a man she ever did pine, And he was all of ten and nine. Then up came the sun and down John run Along through the valley below, For John loved Lu and she loved him Their love did grow h grow. Foolish man who was so thin, He was just all neck and chin! But he worked hard all through the day To build himself a house, they say. Then up came the sun and down John run Along through the valley below, For John loved Lu and she loved him. But he was 'fraid to say so. The maiden's hair was long and black. She put it up in a three foot stack To venture on down into town To buy a stylish gingham gown. Then up came the sun and down John run Along through the valley below. For John loved Lu and she loved him. And she wanted him to say so. The maid ran into the valley below, And in her heart she felt a glow, Thinking that she might see her man By an ever so carefully plotted plan. Then up came the sun and down John run Along through the valley below, For John loved Lu and she loved him. Now the whole world would know. But John was in the tavern dim And a maid named Ann sat next to him. Ann kissed John as Lu passed by, Lu hung herself from a rafter high. Then up came the sun and down John run Along through the valley below, For John loved Lu and she loved him, But no one would ever know. La Verte 32 LJINIlDEFlC3l:lAEJLJATES L K N , Jr.-1 .3--! Today, the road all runners come, Shoulder-high we bring you home, And set you at your threshold down, Townsman of a Stiller town. Smart lad, to slip betimes away From fields where glory does not stay, And early though the laurel grows It Withers quicker than the rose. Eyes the shady night has shut Cannot see the record cut, And silence sounds no worse than cheers After earth has stopped the ears: Now you will not swell the rout Of lads that wore their honours out, Runners whom renown outran And the name died before the man. So set before its echoes fade The fleet foot on the sill of shade, And hold the The still-defended challenge-cup. low lintel up And round that early-laureled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead, And find unwithered on its curls The garland briefer than a girl's. VARSITY FOOTBALL Varsity football started the league sea- son with a 40 to 6 victory over Newark Valley. With this impetus the team went on to be unbeaten in Susquenango Leaque competition and become league champions. The most outstanding event of the season occurred during the Chenango Forks game. Whitney Point was behind 12 to 13 when sophomore quarterback Steven Macinsky threw a pass to Bill James who raced 62 yards for the winning touchdown. Halfback BillJames, Tackle Bill Brown, and end Joe Eggleston were named as All League Players. Fullback Doug Baldwin and guard Wayne Schaff were named to the second team. But these boys had out- standing help from Gary Bish, Ralph Can- niff, Chris Smith and many others. These boys went into their post-season game with a 7-0 record only to have it marred by a non-league competitor. Sus- quehanna Valley was the only other area school with an unbeaten record. They defeated the Eagles 13-6 on November 6. J.V. FOOTBALL Junior Varsity football team won five and lost two games this year. The boys did well with the limited manpowerg most games were played with about twenty players. The defense, especially the line, gave a strong performance sparked by Harrison Marsh. The offense was led by Wally Smith who was the team's high scorer. The team possessed spirit, and a determination that provided them with an aggressive momentum week after week. JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL Junior high football team, composed of hardy seventh and eighth graders, played three games during the season. They won 19-0 over Windsor but lost both of their games with Chenango Forks 7-6 and 13-6. Although the entire eighth grade member- ship will be leaving, Coaches Gates and Johst feel next season has hopes. Football VARSITY OFFENSIVE TOP ROW: D. Sherman, D. Baldwin, S. Macinsky, W. James. Dunham CROSS COUNTRY-1965 Manpower to send the Eagles into first place at the Section IV Class B Cross Country Run at Belden Hill was provided by the Largest turnout in the history of Cross Country at Whitney Point. Earning varsity letters and a trip to Bear Moun- tain State Park, scene of this year's Intersectional Cross Country Run, were two seniors CLeRoy Bailey and Jim Czebi- niakb, three juniors CJim Ballard, Darb Dunham, and Ray Kellogj, and two sopho- more upstarts CCorky Dickinson and Bill Eatonl. Whitney Point also finished third at the Twelfth Annual Cincinnatus Invitational, second at both the Third Annual Harpursville Invitational E Sus- quenango League Meet at Windsor, and an- other first at the Seventh Annual Wind- sor Invitational. Cross Country Much of the season was a game of cat- and-mouse with Greene's fine club. Five times the Eagles faced Trojan Opponents. On three of those occasions the Eagles were edged out, and on another occasion, the Windsor Invitational, Whitney Point squeaked by Greene with a score of 92 to 95. Whitney Point won the big one, how- ever, for the Section IV Championship, with an all-out team effort that netted a mere 50 points in a field of 14 teams. Greene was second with 65. The Section IV Run was also the scene of Darryl Dunham's greatest victory this year. He placed first in a field of 102 runners, finishing 50 yards ahead of his nearest competitor. In other invitatio- nals this year he placed second once, third twice, sixth once, and seventh once. He also placed 25th at the Inter- sectional Run. Cross Country is not a HG1oryH sport. The boys run an average of 30 miles in preparation for each meet. These are long, lonely miles. Almost no one comes to watch a meet. If the team wins, hard- ly a word is reported in the newspapers. The boys deserve much credit this year for an outstanding job. l 1 CROSS COUNTRY-MR. JAMES SIMPSON TOP ROW: T. Nichols, Mgr., D. Dickinson, J. Burghardt, K. Zeiter, D. Leach, C. Verry, Mr Simpson, J.
