Open Doors at WPCS Foreword Whitney Point Central School has its doors open a good share of the year to everyone in the Central District. Throughout the school year, some 1390 pupils enter the doors to all the different depart- ments of learning. It is the aim that everyone, upon his departure from the school, will have had the benefit of all its facilities to be used to the best advantage. There is always an open door in this school to anyone who wants to better himself in basic education, music, shop, athletics, homemaking, agriculture, commercial, and even Adult Education. The students are proud of the fine equipment in such a beautiful school. People of the community have seen the need for adequate equipment for increased enrollment over the last few years. Doors have been opened to two new wings to fit these needs. As the Class of 1956 graduates, those Seniors who have made up the plans and produced this yearbook, feel assured that future classes will find open doors hereafter for their educational needs. The staff now invites you through the school to observe what the students have done this year. Alan Schmedicke designed the cov- er of the 1956 Maroon and Gold. The open door of the WPCS auditor- ium is a fitting introduction to this year's theme - The Open Doors 2 at Whitney Point Central School. pen Door To Administration X ' i V: l .mi 3 -oi fix Sivmxv. The addition consists of fourteen classrooms, an Industrial Art Shop, an Agricultural Shop, a Cafeteria, a kitchen and a gym extension. This extension should be adequate to handle the school's pupil en- rollment for the next five to eight years. The new Cafeteria will seat five hundred students in small groups at the tables. The new kitchen, which adjoins the cafeteria, is furnished with 520,000 worth of stainless Continued Page 5 To The Seniors: Congratulations on your graduation. This is an achievement of great worth and one of which you can al- ways be proud. Graduation opens for you another door, a door through which you glimpse the op- portunities of the future with its challenges, opportunities and goals. Step through the door with a steadfast heart and a firm deter- mination that you will reach the goals ahead. Goals are standards by which one can measure his success and progress, they furnish the dynamic for the long hours of grueling effort which must be done. That is the history of human achievement. You step through a door and see a new goal. You then use this as a handhold to pull yourself to new and higher levels of accomplishment, accomplishments which you may have thought to be impossible. Accept the challenge and may your determination burn with a fierce and steady flame all challenges met, all goals at- tained. 5 Board Cf Education Seated: Carl Bird, Kenneth Stearns, Leslie Strong, Hiram Good- rich, District Superintendent. Standing? Francis Kennedy, Franklin Pendell, Charles Pratt. Not in Picture: Ernest Edmister, Treasurer. 4 New wing continued steel equipment. These new rooms and equipment will enable the cafe- teria workers to feed 1400 children in 25 hours and eliminate the usual rush and hurry apparent in the small cafeteria. Each classroom is equipped with a sink and drinking fountain. The wall colors in the classrooms are two or more pastel shades, plus eye saver chalk boards. The ceilings are sound proof plaster. The extension of the gymnasium, with an electric holding door which divides the gym into two separate parts, makes it possible to seat seven hundred spectators. This is an increase of two hundred and fif- ty from the original seating capac- ity. Continued Below Mr. Osmer Brooks is Vice Prin- cipal, and Administrative Assis- tant. This year, he teaches one class of Business Law. He is also Director of the new Adult Education class, started in September 1955. Miss Virginia Hill, Office Assistant, takes care of all general office work, such as the typing of bills and orders. She also takes charge of the cafeteria money and helps with the attendance record. Mrs. Evelyn Storrs, Secretary, handles most of the correspond- ence and school banking. She also acts as receptionist and telephone operator. The Industrial Art Shop will be equipped with new tools and ma- chines. A ramp into the shop from the parking lot will enable heavy machinery to be brought into the classroom. The Agricultural Shop, which adjoins the Industrial Art Shop with its machines and tools, will make the equipment more ac- cessible for the students to work on farm machinery. The old Cafeteria, on the top floor, will be changed into a Com- mercial Department, second to none in the State, with classrooms and adequate work shops for the year- book and Pointer Weekly. VARSITY BASKETBALL For the first time in recent years, the Eagles turned in a losing re- cord, seven wins and nine losses. Leaguewise, the Pointmen nabbed third place behind Sherburne and Chenango Forks by winning five and losing an equal number. Seniors on this year's squad were Jerry Scholes, Robert Driscoll, Jim Kiernan, Gates Cook, Paul Page and David Adams. Juniors Carl Tingley and Bill Freije and Sophmores Jerry Hodges, Ike Sears and Jim Brown will be back next year. Bill Frei- je dislocated his elbow in the New- ark Valley game and was unable to finish the season. For the first time in four years, the Northern Division defeated the Southern Division in the All-Star game. Jerry Hodges and Jim Kiernan represented the local squad. Will it be a hit or a miss? JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Hampered by the lack of experience, the Little Eagles found the going rather rough this year, ekeing out only three victories in sixteen starts. For seven straight league games the Eaglets failed to regis- ter a league victory. Then, on February 10, one week before the end of the season, the Eaglets played an entirely different brand of basketball in upsetting a strong Oxford team, 44-37. In the two re- maining games the locals gave championship - bound Sherburne a scare before wilting in the closing minutes. The other two victories were over Newark Valley and Windsor in non-league encounters. Steve Morgart and Bob Prentice represented Coach Paul O'Donnell's Junior Varsity at the All-Star Game at Sidney.
