It has taken many years for you to reach this high point in your life and I am proud of you and proud to have had a small part in helping you achieve a high school diploma. Traditions are important in life, they form the staunch bulwarks against rad¬ icalism and they serve as constant guides to remind us of our heritage and our birthright to the many freedoms on which our country is founded. In keeping with the tra¬ dition that the children of this nation shall receive the best ed¬ ucation possible, your own parents and other citizens of this school district have seen fit to approve the building of a large addition to this school in order that we may serve even better children in the future. It will cost them money but they give it gladly with the sincere hope that an educated peo¬ ple shall always be a free people. EXPANSION PROGRAM With the central district voters ' approval at the polls on Dec. 13, the Board of Education launched up¬ on the latest building program to meet the needs of Whitney Point Central School ' s ever expanding en¬ rollment. At a cost of $600,000, the new addition will include 14 new classrooms, a new cafeteria, new Ag. Shop and an Industrial Arts shop. The proposed addition will extend from the present boys ' show¬ er room straight back toward the river and will be 2 stories high. An extension of 40 ' on the present main gym will be made to comply with regulations of the State Edu¬ cation Department. The present cafeteria will be converted to a big commercial department. Repro¬ ductions of blueprints for the new addition are on the opposite page. Miss Virginia Hill, off¬ ice assistant, (left) with Mrs. Evelyn Storrs, school secretary. Vice-Principal, Osmer J. The Ho. loween Parade In Memoriam Arthur Southard (1943-1954) Artie was born in Whitney Point, August 3, 1943. All his life was spent in this locality. He belong¬ ed to the Methodist Church and sang in the Boys Choir. Also active in cub scouts, Artie was especially interested in history, all kinds of sports and in taking trips. His excellent memory for names of people and places enabled him to give vivid descriptions of movies and television programs he had seen or any trips he took. Everyone who knew Artie was very much grieved when his final illness forced him to leave forever Whitney Point Cen¬ tral School. Maybe you have another book to give me MEN ARE LIKE STREETCARS Nancy Beagle and David Adams Men Are Like Streetcars is a comedy of the younger generation, starring Maudie and her teen-age friends. Maudie brings a lot of misery to herself and her family by teaching her cousin, Joy, her en¬ tire line about men. Joy turns the tables by using the line, stealing Maudie ' s boyfriend plus all other available men. Maudie also maneu¬ vers to marry off her sister and fix up her father ' s finance. The results of Maudie ' s efforts are far from satisfactory and get her even deeper in trouble. Although the problem seems insurmountable, there is a wholly satisfactory conclusion to the play. The Juniors presented this play in the school auditorium March 23, 24, and 25. JUNIORS REHEARSE MEN ARE LIKE STREETCARS ALL AROUND THE SCHOOL Junior Play LINES REHEARSED IN HM. EC. RM. However, the Pointers lost 6 other contests. Coach Leo Birmingham, back after a two year lay-off, saw Jim Donnelly and Bob Lethbridge go to the All- Star game with Johnny Glezen being the player chosen to go to the Founders Day game, held at Johnson Field. JUNIOR VARSITY Coach Frank Migliore guided his Eaglets to four wins as against two defeats for the 1954 baseball sea¬ son. The only losses came at the hands of a very strong Greene nine and an equally as strong East Jr. team from Binghamton. Leo Abbott and Alan Schmedicke did most of the pitching for the team and should do well in varsity uniforms next year, as should all the boys. The bovs gained a lot of valuable experience and should be able to take over for the boys who graduated last year. W.P. J.V. The first time since Jack Halloran took over the coaching reins of Whitney Point Central teams, the Point had a losing season. Three wins against four losses during the 1954 football season brought Coach Halloran ' s record to an end. Jim Donnelly, a power driving Sen¬ ior, along with his protege, Sopho¬ more Jim Hohn, tallied 20 points apiece during the season to lead the team in their losing efforts. However, as Coach said of the team, Although they didn ' t win every game, the self-confidence and team spirit was about the best we ever had. This says a lot for a team which was short of man power, and which used many inexperienced personnel. Varsity 11-man defensive lineup is ready for action. SEASON SCORING W.P. Ed Duhlmeier, Lew Tingley, Os Brooks, Russ Burghardt, and Dick Smith rounded out the sec¬ ond place squad. A1 Reed, who net¬ ted 254 points during the season, and Jim Donnelly were the Eagle re¬ presentatives at the league All- Star game. Bob Lethbridge, the 6-4 Senior playing his first year of basketball, grabbed most of the re¬ bounds and scored 244 points for the runner-up total. 62 si The Little Eagles had a fairly suc¬ cessful season, finishing in sec¬ ond place with a 6-4 league record. Overall, they were 11-6 with most of their losses at close margins. The usual starting line-up consis¬ ted of Bob Driscoll, Jim Kiernan, Bill Freije, Jerry Hodges, and Carl Tingley. Jim Hohn, Paul Page, George White, Dave Chichester, Gates Cook, David Adams, Steve Mor- gart, Dick James, and Jim Brown filled in when needed.
