WHS Baseball Team Swings in '84 Whitney started the regular season with a 1-9 loss to the Midway J.V. After that the Wildcat nine played defending class A state champs Valley Mills and took a 1-14 defeat. The Wildcatsthen lost three in a row. The team was 0-5 when meeting up with West. Whitney defeated West 13-11 in nine innings. Entering district play the Wildcats were 4-5. In the opening game against Blooming Grove the team got into full swing with a 15-5 route. After the win, Whitney lost three district games to Glen' Rose, Clifton, and Itasca all by one run. The Wildcats ended the first half of district in fourth place with a 1-3 record. Whitney started the second half of district play with an 11-0 victory over Blooming Grove. The Wildcat pitchers had a no-hitter. In the next game against Glen Rose the Whitney nine won 8-5. The win put the Wildcats in a three way tie for second with Glen Rose and Itasca. Whitney, needing to win their last two games in order to advance to the playoffs, played Clifton. Clifton eliminated the Wildcats with a 3-13 disappointing loss giving Clifton the district crown. ln the final game of the season Whitney defeated Itasca 9-3 which eliminated the Wampus Cats from the playoffs. The tennis team at- tendedmeetsinCliftonand Meridian. ln district compe- tition Jill Callaway and Jennie Hill placed 2nd in doubles and qualified for the regional playoffs. Dan- ette Lampson and Kenda Birdwell placed 4th in district doubles. Kelley Reed earned 3rd and Ginger Hibbitts 4th in girls' singles. Other participants were Laurecia Hill, Blake Boyce, Tim Hill, Johnny Hill, Kwen Karr, and Ricky Hines. Golfers Compete For District Title The Wildcat golfers advanced to regional after earning 2nd place behind Grandview in the district meet in Meridian. They were shut out in the regional meet but proved to have a very successful year. All of this year's participants will be back next year. K as 5 :Y . .
