Girls' Basketball FRONT ROW, left to right: Marguerite Hancock, Eileen Briggs, Rosemary Frasier, Martha Smith, Sandra Odom, Donna Connally, Ruth Wylie. BACK ROW: Ann Gant, Manager, Janet Mullins, Kay Vines, Sue Cobb, Joyce Blocker, Betty Smith, Helen Brunett, Barbara Degner, Charlotte Marsh, Nelda Lawson, Vondean McConathy, Myra Sanders, Wanda Cunningham, Sylvia Lane, Manager. SUMMARY OF THE SEASON Still lacking a strong defensive star, the Whitney girls came out second in the district 28-B basketball chase, with Meridian coming in first in both the round robin and district tournaments. ln Eileen Briggs, Rosemary Frasier and Martha Smith, Whitney had three big scorers, and Whitney registered the highest scores in the history of the school, but as has been the case the opposition out- scored them in the close ones. Donna Connally came on late in the season to be an offensive sparkplug and along with Rosemary and Martha Smith should make Whitney a fine offensive aggregation next winter. Defensively, Sandra Odom, Wanda Cunningham and Marguerite Hancock were the top performers and only Marguerite fails to return next year. Prospects are bright for the 1957-58 season as only three from the team won't be back .

Boys' Basketball FRONT ROW, left to right: Billy Perkins, Vic Mahon, Kenneth Wallace, James Marsh, Charles Miller, Mickey Hancock. BACK ROW: Bobby Perkins, Ellis Faulkner, Jerry Taylor, Rory Younger, R. Q. Grant- ham, Jakey Younger, Mike Callaway. Lacking height and experience, the Whitney Wildcats landed among the also-rans in the i956-57 sea- son. Highlight of the season was Whitneys winning the consolation title of the Itasca Tournament. Rory Younger paced the Wildcat scorers and finished the 429 points for the season that placed him 14th in scoring in the Central Texas area. Rory was also picked on the All-District Team. Jerry Taylor and Bobby Perkins ranked high in the scoring also. With three starters back for the 1957-58 season things look bright and Taylor is expected to be the top scorer for the Cats. Only two seniors were on the team last season. Valley Mills won the district title along with bi-district honors but fell in the Regional meet at Brownwood. Whitney, Valley Mills and Mosheim are likely to be the strong contenders for the flag this coming season .
