Panther Diamondmen’s Year Sparkles With Key Victories Starting its season off right, the Whitmer baseball team was victorious in 19 of its first 20 games. The Panthers went on to achieve an exceptional record of 27-4, with seven shutouts included among the victories. Whitmer wound up the season in a winning fashion, becom¬ ing the sectional and district champion and advancing to Canton for the regionals. A loss there left them with the title of regional semifinalist. One of the biggest contributing factors in the Panthers’ continual success was the fine pitching skill of Dave Malaczewski. Dave set seven new school records, including five consecutive shutouts and an earned run average of 0.26. He was joined on a strong pitching staff by Pat Dennis, who established a school record of 13 career victories, and hard- throwers John Oehlers, Dave Laraway, and Ron Rightnowar. The Panthers’ offense lacked nothing in its support of the pitchers. Aggressive hitting was provided by Tom Siefert, Andy Roth, Gary Mierzwiak, and Malaczewski. Siefert put his name in the record book, setting career marks with 17 doubles and a .421 batting average. Jon Fisher set a one-season mark by appearing in 31 games. Outstanding plays were turned in whenever Whitmer took the field. Third baseman Mike Mason and second baseman Bobby Jaime consistently provided excellent defensive sup¬ port. In the outfield, Rob Swartz and Fisher were the fielding experts. The Panthers, under the leadership of Coach Rob Rose, had an exciting season and came on strong to finish among the state’s finest high school baseball teams. Dave Malaczewski, winding up to fire one over the] plate, shows opponents what Panthers are made ofj Using his strength, Tony Flaminio leaves the defense helpless by slashing an inside pitch to left field. S Ron “Reggie Jackson” Rightnowar provides excel- lent defense as he puts out a Spartan at first. 196 BASEBALL
