Overcoming tough schedule, varsity has winning season. The 1971 varsity football team was hampered by pre-season injuries to many starting players. The St. Francis Knights defeated Whitmer in the season opener played at Whitmer. The Panthers just couldn ' t get it together for the next game at Newark, either. Even though the underclassmen put their best effort forward, the Tigers upset them, 7-6. Finally, at the Sidney game, with many players back off the injured list, the Panthers began to have a winning season. They beat both Sidney and Clay, but at Lima Senior ' s homecoming game emerged with a highly disputed loss. In Whitmer ' s homecoming game, they met the Start Spartans. The Panthers shut out the Spartans, 18-0. From then on, Whitmer was victorious every time. One of the most talked about wins was the Bedford game. Through the fog, even the second string got a chance to see a lot of action. The Mules couldn ' t make it against the Panther plays designed for power and yardage, as the Panthers rolled, 60-6. The team again showed its strength against an arch rival, the Sylvania Wildcats. With neither their offense or defense able to jell against Whitmer ' s fine squad, the Wildcats were never able to pull ahead. There were many thoughts going through everyone ' s minds at the final game against Central. Over the years, this game has become almost as important to the team as the homecoming game. Showing just how important it is to them, the Panthers made their last effort their best. Whipping the Irish, 26-17 . Nominated to the Coaches ' Hall of Fame were 10 players. This year, a special award for Intestinal Fortitude was given to senior kicker Mike McCord. It was felt by the coaches that Mike deserved a special award for his abilities. Hall of Fame honors were given to Mark Kimmins, Jerry Freels, Dick Schuler, Steve Thomas. Harry Lanzi, Tom Sieren, Bill Ziegler, Bill Lantz, Tom Amstutz, and Doug Barber. Another distinction came to Whitmer when linebacker Harry Lanzi was named as the Times ' Suburban Player of the Year. Also named to the suburban squad were Mark Kimmins and Steve Thomas. Lanzi was named to the second team All-Ohio team. The future of the Whitmer varsity seems assured with the fine record of the many underclass football squads. The reserve team has a fine record of 6-2. The freshman and 8th grade teams had fine winning records, too. Cradling the ball close to his body, Jerry Freels makes a long run that gets him a touchdown. StarJ j,Baidmal Stritch ' Clay St. Francis Sa iilky Bedford Svlv Opponents

The wins of the golf team came from days of practice. The 1971 Whitmer linksters were handicapped by a show of individuality among a few of the players during the opening matches of the season. For the majority of the season the team was led by underclassmen, due to the lack of senior leadership. Nearing the middle of the season, teamwork pulled the play- ers together and led them to a successful second half, thanks to a cracking down by Coach Powell Kingsley. The golf season was highlighted by a greatly disputed match between Whit- mer and Rogers. Senior Tom Barnes was penalized for a peculiar situation that occurred on the 18th green at Whiteford Valley Golf Club. He had to replay a previous shot which had ricocheted off the pro shop roof onto the putting sur- face. Tom failed to duplicate his previous sco re on the hole, thus costing Whit- mer the match. In Whitmer ' s match against district champion Sylvania, the fine play of ju- nior Jeff Norris prevented the Wildcats from whitewashing our linksters. Two awards were presented at the spring sports banquet this past year. The first award went to junior Jeff Norris for ability and leadership shown through- out the season. The second award was presented to senior Kirk Hamilton for his outstanding display of sportsmanship. Outstanding seniors on the team proved to be the brother duo of George and John Crawfis and Chuck Turner. Junior standouts proved to be Jeff Norris, Gary Ruff, and John Schumaker. Below: Jeff Norris. with form and style that he has shown in the past, attempts a chip shot. Below: In attempting to reach the green, senu George Crawfis shows off much skill. Above: Gary Ruff and Chuck Turner have decided that the hotdogs are better than the course.
