Last year the diamondmen really outdid themselves, losing only one regular sea- son game. That loss was to Findlay, the eventual state champ. In regular season play Whitmer had a 15 and 1 record. The Panthers went on to beat Start, St. John ' s, and Woodward in the sectional tournament, and Sylvania in the district. The season ended in the regional tournament when Whitmer played Warren Western Reserve and lost. The team ' s final record was 19-2. Contributing to the success on the mound were FJon Miners, Tim Siefert, and Mike Honas. The infield starters were Dave Duhaime at first base. Bob Leist at sec- ond, Dave Williams at shortstop, and Jerry Norton at third. The outfield had Denny Erswell, Tim Black, and Rob Sharrow. Marc Cupp was behind the plate. The reserve baseball team featured Barry Geordt and Jim Chandler at first, Phil Knisely and Rick Wilson at second, and Jeff Alt and Art Allsop at third. Tom Inman was the starting shortstop, while Mike Malinovsky, Marc Dewood, and Tom Barri- ger played the outfield. The varsity track team added another first place in Gold W. The varsity track team ' s season of 11-3 was one of the best that the school has had. The Gold W Meet found Whitmer in first place for the second consecutive year with 137 p)oints. The team did their best ever in the sectional by taking 4th place. In the 220 yard dash, Jeff Smith finished sixth in the state. Some of the best runners were: Jeff Smith, who broke the school record with 9.8 seconds, in the 100 yard dash; Jim DeRose in the mile run and two-mile event; and John Kantner in the half mUe. The two relay teams were composed of Steve Thomas, Ray Wilson, Tim Deuble, and Jeff Smith in the 880 yard relay, and Jeff King, Cal Hetrick, Jerry Freels, and Jeff Smith in the mile relay. The best hurdler was Scott Majoros who entered both the 120 yard high hurdles and the 180 yard lows . In the field events Steve Thomas put the shot.
