In fact, from their beanies to their sloppy shoes they are just you, you, and especially you. It's their shouts we hear at 31005 their groans at 8:50. It's their cheers that spur the teams to victoryg their pat- ter and chatter that ring through the hallsg their seriousness that fills the classrooms. Tim and Terry with their love of mer- riment, echo and re-echo the jive of Fri- day dances. They gobble sandwiches in the cafeteria and aim their papers at the baskets. They beam with pride as the curtain falls, the audience roars, and an- other Wlmitiiier drama scores success. Wlitm with a fun-loving heart could help but love Tim and Terry! Tim and Terry join clubs, put over parties, and influence others to back worthy causes. Sports? just look at that trophy case! Yet, with all this they still have time for study, proven by scholar- ships and awards won by good minds and hard work. To some people Tim and Terry may be just a couple of students, but to us who know and understand them they are our closest friends. Here within these pages we have tried to capture just a fraction of their living spirit that you too may share their enthusiasm. THURSTON Um.-5 It is my sincere hope that the years spent in Whitmer High School have given the students an appreciation of the worth while things of life, a sense of values which will help them in the trying times all of us are facing. As men and women each one will play a responsible part in recon- structing a peace time world. I trust every one will find within himself the spiritual resources necessary for this work. Today many former students, as Well as some faculty members, and one board member are in the armed forces. Others will follow. A few have already made the supreme sacrifice. To those now serving we wish God-speed and a safe return. May the les- sons learned and the friendships that have been formed at Whitmer pre- pare you for the great work of building a better America and a better world that lies ahead. A. N. Thurston. BOARD OF Harry Vischer, Clyde Elder, Harry Graves PAC Ii EIGHT UMD' Another year has rolled by and it is time to affix our autographs of approval to its worthwhileness. The one big question in the mind of every Whitmer student is, 'Have I made the most out of this past year to prepare me for what is to follow ?' We hear much said today about post- war planning, and we are made to wonder just what to expect and what we can do about it. One thing is certain, we are living in changing times. In fact the most certain thing is change. As a law of the universe it becomes the measuring stick of our progress in it. Do not be concerned about what to- morrow may bring, but rather live and produce your best for today and with the opportunity of today's preparation, tomorrow's problems will, by the law of change, solve themselves. Thus we will have done our part in world progress. Elmer Marks. Heretofore it has been relatively inactive but this year Tim and Terry have seen it as it should be seen. They both realize that the council is working for them, not against them. To enforce their regulations this year they have initiated the Student Court, the most democratic movement in the school since the establishment of the council itself. During these sessions students are judged by students and the results are far more effective. Tim and Terry are sorry to say they will no longer be under this jurisdiction but realize how essential is the continuation of this court in the promotion of better student government. She already misses the skating party, the splash party with Tim, the theater party, and even sharing her Christmas with the orphans. Remember when she entertained the Burnham Hi-Y? Was Tim jealous! Then of course there was the after-game dances, the Mothers' Tea, and endless doings at the Y. One thing she won't have to leave behind is her fun at the U.S.O. entertaining the boys in service, All in all she's had a wonderful time and hopes her successors will too. He feels he has gained all of that and more. This year especially his club tried to cooperate more fully with its sister organization and so together they planned a splash party and a joint program. Tim hopes future Hi-Y's will do more to promote such affairs. He also had charge of the Christmas program, doing a beautiful job of a one-act play, to say nothing of sponsoring a successful skating party. This year was one of the brightest in our I-Ii-Y history. Tim regrets leaving. Together they swelled their treasuries with the proceeds of a successful skate, but on their own they sold War Bonds and Stamps. Their goal had been to purchase a jeep for the school but that was too easy so now they have hitched their wagon to a plane. We hope you make it, girls. Probably their biggest undertaking was launching the Freshman Club, and then there were the after-school Christmas party, and the welfare work for those less fortunate. To train herself along these lines she joined the Home EC. Club in her freshman year and since then has come a long way in learning the principles necessary in the management of a happy home. On the social side they sponsored a Korny-jeans Dance, a tea for new members, a splash party, and an after-basketball game dance. Terry pricked her finger making pennants to sell fostering school spirit, but she didn't mind. Early in January they favored Trilby with a concert. Terry was among the girls singing in the trio and the octet, and as usual, was a credit to her leader. Probably their most outstanding accomplishment was the assembly program they presented. That was their time to shine and they certainly didn't pass it up. Our team was exceedingly light but with hght to spare and Oak Harbor was completely outclassed. We 19, They 0. WHI'TMER vs. GENOA After overcoming a strong Oak Harbor team the Panthers were quite confident taking Genoa in an afternoon game. The thrill of the day seemed to be the last play when shifty Bill Bowman grabbed the pigskin and did a beautiful, side-stepping run, 60 yards for his first touchdown, but it was called back because of clipping. Now the Panthers were really rolling. We 25, They 6. DELTA vs. WHITMER Our team was now working like a precision instru- ment. Their blocking was good and Delta was com- pletely routed. jake Dubendorfer was injured slightly during the second half but came in a few minutes later to do some spectacular running. We 26, They 0. They were twice in scoring position and things looked bad for many minutes but finally we woke up and pushed over a touchdown. Victory number four. We 7, They 0. WHITMER vs. OTTAWA HILLS The 'Green and White was not even practice for the vicious Panthers as they chalked up their fifth consecutive victory. We 19, They O. WHITMER vs. PERRYSBURG The Yellowjackets came to Whitmer field with one of their strongest teams in years. They scored touch- downs in the hrst and third quarters but in the last quarter the Maize and Blue made its bid for victory when Carl Kurth passed a long one to Bob Lockard. The boys of the Varsity this year, under their able coach, Mr. Pritts, broke a record which has been long standing in Whitmer High. On De- cember 3, the boys held Genoa throughout 32 minutes of fast play to not one single field goal. All of their 10 points were made on four shots. This is a record for future teams to shoot at. The honor of being the first victim of the 19-I-3-44 basketball season fell to Holland. The Hollanders came to Whitmer confident of an easy and decisive victory but were very much sur- prised when the boys turned on the heat and gave them a very thorough burnishing. Score 34-18. The next game was the eventful game with Genoa. Genoa traveled to Whitmer to take a crack at our 1000 record and left with our record still 1000. Score this time 24-10. Our next game and one of the hottest of the season was with the Rossford Quintet. Rossford journeyed to the Panther's .hardwood to sink a foul shot in the last few fleeting moments of the game and beat us by a heart breaking score of 17-16. The boys got back in form again by journeying to Clay and handing them as close a defeat as we had received the week before. Score-Panthers 29, Clay 28. The next game on our home court was with the strong suburban team, Maumee. After a hard fought game our boys were handed a crushing defeat-36-22. The boys seem to be having a streak of bad luck as we dropped another game to the Perrys- burg five. The score this time 27-17. After Christmas vacation and a couple of weeks of practice the boys were clicking again. Ottawa Hills came to the Panther's home floor and bowed to our boys by a score of 27-22. We next invaded the realm of our old arch enemy, Sylvania. Burnham seemed to have a hot streak in the last half and succeeded in handing our boys another one of those one point defeats. Sylvania 29, Panthers 28. As brilliant an exhibition of basketball playing as was ever seen by Whitmerites was put on by our boys as Clay journeyed to our home floor, only to be swamped under a 53-37 score. Inci- dentally this is the highest score run up by a Wliitmer team in the last five years, another triumph for coach Pritts and the team. For our next game we again battled Ottawa Hills. The boys from the hills seemed to have lady luck on their side. Qur boys were beaten by a 29-19 score. The Maumee team looked mighty good but most of us thought ours was better. lt was a close game all the way through but Whitmer was defeated, -I-0--ll. 'l'he next week we were away to Perrysburg. 'l'he Yellow jackets had had a better season than Wllitlner, but our team turned the tables, and in the last half, VVhitmer pulled ahead and won, 27-23. Burnham High visits VVhitmerg the stands are packed and the game is ready to start. lfight minutes are not very long but in this game they seem to go slowly. The first half was close, but in the last quarter, the Panthers zoomed ahead, giving Whitmer a 33-21 victory over Sylvania. Rossford was the last big game of the year, with exception of the Tournament Games. Rossford was unbeaten by any suburban team up to this point. Their floor was small and it took the first quarter for our boys to become adjusted to it, but by then it was too late to catch up and Rossford remained unbeaten by defeating Whitmer, 44-23. 6 THE TOURNAMENT The day Mr. Pritts went down to the Tour- nament drawing was a big event. He drew Libbey and on the first night the Panthers went down to lVlacomber to face the Cowboys. liven though Libbey was in the cellar of the city league we still had a tough opponent. Libbey led at the half 21-20, but VVhitmer started the second half strong and defeated the Cowboys 4-If-35, the second time in two years a Whitmer team has beaten a city team. After overcoming the Libbey five quintet we had to encounter the strong Fighting Irish of Central High. We played the first game that night of the Quarter Final. Up into the second quarter it was nip and tuck. Central led at the half and kept the lead throughout the game. Although in the fourth quarter we did bring our score up to 33-35, Central triumphed 45-33. This ended the season with an average of eight victories and eight losses.
