SCHOOL COMMITTEE: Back row: James Haggerty, Lloyd Patriquin, Mary Ann Danforth, William Wisnaskas, John Noone, Kerry McGrath Front row: Dr. Louis Perullo, Frank Sadowski, Richard Jacob, Bernard Douglas, Peter Jones Mr. Grondin Mr. Newburn ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Y I .QV P 4 Dear Members of the Class of 1984: Congratulations upon your graduation from Whitman-Hanson Regional High School. Four short years ago, you came to this school to learn, to grow, to make friends, and, to most importantly, build a foundation of knowledge, values, and attitudes that will guide you through the many wonderful years of life and opportunities ahead. You, the Class of 1984 will always be a very special group of young people to 1116. You are my Hrst graduating class. Your total high school experience has been during my Superintendency at Whitman-Hanson. During this time, Whitman-Hanson has changed a great deal. I hope that the changes ha ve beneHtted you and that I, Mrs. Buckley and your teachers have made a positive, significant, and lasting difference in your lifes. During your time at Whitman-Hanson, you have learned many lessons. One lesson that I impart to my own children as a parent, I offer to you. lt is a lesson that I learned, not in school, but from my parents. As you know, your parents were your first teachers. Many of the lessons they taught you in terms of values, integrity, loyalty, and respect are far more important than many of the things you learned in formal schooling. Simply put, this lesson is: Take pride in your roots . . . your family, your community, your school . . . Never forget them. They will always be there . . . especially during the inevitable bad times when you need help the most, Wherever life takes you, near or far, this is home, a part of you, a source of strength and unconditional love and acceptance. I hope that from time to time, maybe not now, but in the years ahead, you will remember this lesson and, if need be, Hnd courage and strength to overcome the problems or challenges at hand. I also hope that in that not too distant future when you become parents, you will instill in your children the need for and acceptance of family, community, and school as sources of strength, courage, and support. I will miss you and think of you often. Sincerely, Dr. Perullo SUPERINTENDENT Louis P Perullo Mrs. Buckley Superintendent MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL TO THE CLASS OF 84 Your days at Whitman-Hanson are coming to a close. At this time it is Htting that you think back on the time that has passed, to recall those incidents which ha ve made high school memorable in your lives. As I look back on the accomplishments of the past 4 years, I can not help but think of the Class of 84. In the Hnal analysis, it is the student body that makes a school what it is, and you have made Whitman-Hanson an outstanding school, a place which is exciting to be in and of which we may all be justly proud. For your cooperation and your efforts, I am deeply grateful. Your years at Whitman-Hanson are the foundation for your future. In this my last message to you, I ask you to build carefully on that foundation and I wish each of you a rich and rewarding life. Sincerely, Geralde S. In the early days of Freshman year, way back in 1980, there were a lot of new things to get used to. There were strange faces, new teachers, room numbers, schedules, combinations and especially short cuts to classes, to name just a few. The long rocky road began on September 4, 1980. It was tough in those early days but the best was yet to come. Our class officers for Freshman year were voted in mid-October. They were: Jim Gordon - President, Stacey Pendleton - Vice President, Michelle Manter - Treasurer, and Denise Lewis - Secretary. These four, along with class advisors Mrs. Mason and Mr. Farrell, did what they could to get the ball rolling as far as class activities were concerned. That year to get our class rolling, we had a couple of bake sales, a candy drive and at the end of the year, a Rock-n-Roll movie. Led ZeppcIin's Stairway to Heaven drew a big crowd and was enjoyed by everyone. In the last days of our first year we elected the officers for Sophomore year. Michelle Manter was our new President, Stacey stayed Vice-President, Julie La Rossa was our new Secretary and Pam Barbaro owas our new Treasurer. Every thing looked promising for our second year, except for the fact that Mr. Farrell, who had served us well, became very ill and was forced to retire. Mr. Cosgrove became our other advisor. Not being the rookies anymore, was our major thought as we entered our sophomore year. We knew the ropes, and coming in for our second year was a breeze. There were alot of big plans made for this year. Yes, we had the basic bake sales and candy drives which took place often, but we had our Hrst dance which was a smashing success. The night was February 12, 1982, when W.H.R.C. spun the records and kept the joint jumping from start to finish. There were contests, prizes and give-a ways which made it a fun evening for everyone. There was also another movie offered to the class. It was the 3D thriller Creature from the Black Lagoon . lt was a sell out and all who went had a great time. W.H.R.C. topped their February dance late in April and again they kept the place rocking with one of the best dances the school has seen in years. But the highlight of sophomore year was our trip to Marthas Vineyard in mid June. It was so much fun, riding around on bikes, walking along the beach and roller skating at the roller rink. We 'll always remember that special day: June Il, 1982 the day the class of 84 invaded the island of Martha 3 Vineyard! At the close of sophomore year we again elected new omcers for our junior year. Michelle remained President, Stacey Vice-President, Pam Treasurer and Marianne Wood was our new Secretary. Sophomore year was full of new experiences and as we approached junior year there were hopes of many more memorable events to come. The sweet sounds of being an upper-classman rang through the junior hallways as the 1982-1983 school year began. So many plans and expectations for this year were coming up. We opened up the year with another one of W.H.R.C. 's spectacular dances. A bake sale and M Kc M drive followed the dance, and in December we had our semi-formal dance. One event that will never be forgotten was the outstanding record of the 1983 Football Team and the Super Bowl against St. John 's Prep. The loss of that one game will never compare to the Spirit and Closeness W.H.R.S. displayed in all of W- H 's history. 1983 brought a stew of exciting events. The Dance Marathon will never be forgotten by those whom participated in this event. It was a lot of fun, but it was a long 24 hrs. At the end of the dance the applause and praise we received from all the parents was reward enough. Late in May we had the infamous beach towel sale which brought out thoughts of warm summer days. And ofcourse the Hnale for junior year was the Junior Prom held at Christo 's II on June 10, 1983. The band was Euphoria and Kim Nye was chosen as the Prom Queen. The following Monday, we elected our Senior Class ofHcers. Michelle Pero was our new President, Julie La Rossa our new Vice-President, Pam remained Treasurer and Marianne Secretary. Now that our Freshman, Sophomore and Junior years were behind us, we waited with great anticipation for the day when we would become SENIORS! Now theres no turning backg we are at the end of our line. Perhaps this will be the greatest year of our lives, and each moment will have some special meaning to us. As the year began we had to realize that there would be no one to look up to and that all the underclassmen would look up to us because we were Seniors. Our Hrst fund raiser was our M lk M drive. Then in October, W.H.R.C. had the biggest Masquerade Ball this side of Transylvannia, and some of the costumes were out of this world! Our football team hit on hard times this year and the support from our class, didn 't stopg in fact it was stronger than ever! At Thanksgiving the Senior Class ga ve the rest of the school a lesson in what school spirit was really like. In December, the grand Hnale of 3 months of work on the Senior Class Play Cactus Flower hit the school like gangbusters. Directed by Mrs. Anderson with lead players Linda Aveni, Dawn Mitchell, Jim Vaughan and Jim Gordon, this play had more publicity and more reviews than any other Senior Class Play. As we celebrate the New Year, we also celebrate the 10th Anniversary of our radio station. January 13 had been set aside for W.H.R.C. ls birthday. Many radio personalities were in attendance, and it was an exciting day, which continued into the night for the birthday dance, another W.H.R.C. extravaganza. It was a great day as the whole school came out to wish Mr. Colburn and all the members of the radio station, past and present HAPPY BIR THDA Y! The days are numbered now, and soon we will be a Hgment of the past, but there is still so much ground to cover. Coming in April we 'll journey south to sunny Florida and beach bum for a few days. We have looked forward to this trip for 4 years. Then our Hnal month and final days will come in May. The bells will ring for the last time for us, but before we part for good we still have our Senior Prom at the Sheraton-Tara and our Senior Banquet at Ridder's Country Club. Then on Sunday, June, 1984, we 'll come together one last time to receive what we have strived for 12 memorable years. There 'll be a feeling of accomplishment, yet a lost feeling that high school is over.' We 'ha ve left our school, never to return but the spirits of the Class of 84 will roam through these hallways long after we are gone. - Jim Gordon ' 4 CLASS WILL Michael Ahern-l lea ve Mr. Goslin's fence laps to everyone still taking gym.
