As clever with chalk or magic marker in hand as he is with a broom, Mr. Thompson's poems, drawings and what not, adorn the walls and chalkboards of this school inspiring not only the members of particular teams but the entire student body as well. It is the spark of Mr. Thompson's devotion to the school that kindles the devotion of the student body. D In Memazgf 0 fuse!! ACTIVITIES SEC TI O The activities offered at Whitman-Hanson are many and varied. Students may pursue interests beyond the classroom for both personal enioyment and development of skills for future use. Athlet- ics offer the opportunity to learn teamwork and sportsmanshipg the band and cheerleaders add enthusiasm to school functions. All activities are important because they allow the student to ex- press his ideas and in doing so, he develops character and personality. A student who ioins the yearbook staff has the opportunity to extend his ingenuity and crea- tivity in many directions. The staff contains many substatts including literary, activities, sports, layout, business, typing, and underclass. Each of these have specialized duties but they must all work together to form a successful yearbook. r-... 1 al' B. Brown, mgr., D. Webb, N. Doran, D. Mancinelli, R. Betzold, M. Finlay, F. Troy, B. When a iunior or senior student is elected to the National Honor Society he has, in the opinion of the faculty, the four characteristics of scholarship, leadership, service, and char- acter as well as having maintained a B average for three con- secutive terms. The main task of the Honor Society is tutoring of students, however, last year members were assigned to aid the guidance office orientation program for incoming freshman. The Honor Society also raises money for the Citizens' Scholar- ship Foundation by sponsoring Bermuda Day. The Student Council, advised by Mr. Smith and Miss Leahy, represents the student body and its opinions. Members are elected by their homerooms. The student council runs the school bookstore and collects money every Friday, Penny Day , which is used to support two orphans. The council sup- ports an annual dance and gives a scholarship through the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation. Seated: Miss Leahy and Mr. Smith, advisors, 'lst row: N. Gatturna, J. Berry, N. Turner, C. Earlier this year, a total of six boys from each gym class were chosen to participate in this one percent program. The program itself spans at least a twenty-one week period. Its purpose is to provide a rugged program of agility, balance and strength exercises. The ones who finished the program were awarded a handsome trophy and the distinction of being among the top one percent in the nation who have reached the peak of physical fitness, with the feeling that a great challenge had been met. For one who has never participated in any sport, the qualities of leadership and spirit are very vague in their minds. For it is the custom of Whitman-Hanson sports to mold these qual- ities into their participants. For one who has never felt the ioy of victory or despaired at the woes of defeat, then he has not, and never will become a complete human being. . f -'J'-1 If' 1 -fri FRESHMA FOOTBALL 1966 3.5, ,i 1 J .:,.A ,A . The year is a mixture ot anxiety about tuture plans, participation tor the last time in class activities such as the play and prom, exchanging pictures, and of course, studying. Each student looks forward to senior weelc and graduation and hopes that his last year will be a memorable one. The class officers lead the Grand March. G uf., 6 , G X , 6? s, ' - Cf: W ' s. The Junior Prom, NIGHT IN VIENNA, was held Friday, May I3, l966. Though Friday the thirteenth is traditionally un- lucky, the prom was a complete success. Glittering chandeliers, marble balcon- ies, and masses of flowers enhanced the Viennese ballroom scene. The class colors of white and gold were also prom- inent in the decorations. The high point of the evening was the announcing of the Queen and her court. This occasion will always be remembered as one of our most enjoyable class functions. V, .. The Queen and her Escort. N.
