From a study of the student and his activities, an accurate history ot the unique year should emerge. The reader should be able to look at this history in the future as a living record of the past. Above all, the theme of the high school years as the time between youth and respon- sible adulthood should universalize this history's general interest. -9 rv DEDICATIO lg. Q pm up MR. G. For his untiring service to the school, the editors gratefully dedicate the INTERIM to Mr. Douglas Godfrey. It was Mr. G. who originally had the idea to present the successful Broadway musical, Brigadoon. It was his drive for perfection and boundless energy which served as an example for everyone involved in the production. He has always encouraged his students to participate in S.E.M.S.B.A., District, All-Store, and New England. At football games Mr. G. has served faithfully his two-fold position as avid rooter and band leader. The whole school appreciated the half-time shows of the band and maiorettes: largely a result of Mr. G.'s painstaking work. Unselfish devotion to his school has won him the admiration and loyalty of the entire student body and faculty. 3 gt C wx I ad' 9 x 4 , '- Y I' 4 ' I 'Off- 4 96. From teacher instruction in the classroom, the student gains academic knowledge. Working with teachers in activities of classes and clubs, he gains experience in organizing and in working with other people. The student learns how much work and worry goes into any success by watching his teachers planning dances and supervising 'Brigadoonf At sporting events he finds the team's most enthusiastic supporters to be the faculty. After the hard work there is the Student-Faculty Basket- ball Game, in which students and faculty di'scard antagonisms simply to have a good time together. Whether he goes on to industry, college, the armed service or business, the student makes use of the skills and knowledge he has gained in this fruitful student-teacher relationship. Rallies, enlivened by the antics of Senior girls, aroused the spirit and enthusiasm ofthe team and student body. Overwhelming pride in our great football team resulted in the Championship Dance, a night of recognition and merriment. Under the direction of Mr.. Godfrey, the school achieved its most ambitious undertaking to date -- the production of the Broadway musical, Brigadoon. The large corps of students who worked for its success were justified in taking pride and personal satisfaction in this outstanding presentation. Perhaps the best and most mem- orable of our high school experiences are these moments of productive fun. 21 The presentation of Lerner and Loewe's musical, Brigadoon, represented many hours of work and effort by the students and teachers of our high school. A school-wide ettort, the produc- tion employed sword dancers, dramatic actors, comedians, and prop movers, as well as vocal- ists. But admittedly the most memorable portions of the show were the songs of Sharon Murphy and Robert Anderson. The musi- cal, a three-night performance, has set a new level ot musical achievement within the school. Perhaps the best Y MX Now right here we have . . . Oh, hi, Mr. Dodge! Xl ...Q . i HE Pandemonium is on the verge of breaking loose at the pre-Thanksgiving Day rally. During the four years the class of '66 has attended W.l'l.R.l l.S. there have been many exciting and hope-filled rallies. Yet the most promising and satisfying of all was the one preceed- ing the 1965 Thanksgiving Day football game against Abington. The hopes of everyone were at an all time high. Al- though the Old Colony League Champ- ionship was already secure, the football team was striving for the more important Eastern Conference Championship. Maiorettes, cheerleaders and band were out in full force lending their support to the cheering student body. Under the direction of Miss Leahy and Mr. Godfrey all three groups did an excellent iob of inspiring the crowd. The coaches, co- captains and Mr. Teahan made speeches which recognized various outstanding players. John Benson was awarded the title of Quarterback of the Year, by radio station WOKW. The acknowledge- ments were met with the unanimous ap- proval ofthe crowd. The students solicited both money and food from businessmen, who were eager to express their pride in the team. About five-hundred teen- agers took advantage of the open house held at the Whitman Town Hall and danced to the music of the Velairs. After the team's co-captains, Dennis O'Brien and John Benson, had congratulated the boys on their fine work, each player received a piece of a fancy football cake donated by the Sugar Scoop. Through everyone's generosity, the team and its supporters enioyed an evening of fun -- the perfect end to a winning season. The score, however, see-sawed from side to side as the boys met stiff competition on the court. Mr. Teahan is to be com- mended on his performance as an impartial ref- eree with only on occasional, but very discrete block against a student. The action was rough from the very beginning as the teachers entered the game with confidence and swinging elbows. They fought long and hard and stooped to every dirty trick their twisted little minds could dream up. ln the end, however, ability and training triumphed over cigaretts and deception and the boys won by a score of 62 to 57. The PANTHERS' PRINT provides un- limited opportunities for students interested in iournalism to express themselves in writing. Student Council, an active voice in our school' affairs, allows future citizens to gain valuable experience. The Bowl- ing Club, and for the hardier students, the Ski Club, are organizations with the express purpose ot fun and enjoyment. Wherever his interests lie, the student finds abundant opportunities to gain practical experien to express his ideas, to explore his talents, and to enrich his mind, through participation in school activities. 33 S C gg...- Wherever his interest lies, Copy Staff M. First the activities and sports staffs selected pictures which best dis- played school events, both athletic and extra-curricular. Then layout attempted to arrange these photos in some type of order, while the copy staff wrote and re- wrote explanatory articles which later kept the typists busy. Meanwhile, the business staff was soliciting enough ads to sponsor the yearbook. Thus, due to everyone's ef- fords, INTERIM went to press. Business Staff T 2.1 . -..wr ' il M. Ricketson, G. Smith, D. '5Za?:'2 ' ' ' 0 0 , Q' 'ff l SP RTS SECTIO It is not very often that a team is commended for sportsmanship, as was our Boys' Basketball Team in l966. However, such an honor is not unusual. Where but in sports can the student learn about per- severance, fairness and courtesy, not just as ideas but as active things? For a while students and team members will recall the vic- tories ofthe Championship Football and Girls' Basketball Teamsf But long after the uniforms have been turned in and the scores have been forgotten, the players will continue practicing the ideals that are necessary not so much to win as to play the game in a good spirit. 53 A Q X But long after Varsity Football 1965 will remain as the acme in the lives of Whitman- l-lanson football fans for many years to come. For the first time in its history, this school fielded a state champion- ship football team. The Panthers put together a powerhouse offense and a stingy defense to sweep by eight Southeastern Conference foes unbeaten, untied, and little scored upon. ln compiling this fine record, the champs took advantage ofa firm belief in themselves to overshadow a deficiency of size and speed. Never once, in eight games, did they lose that faith which was called upon so often. Faith, however, is derived from a knowledge of the game and its fundamentals, thus every football team is only as good as its coaches. Head Coach Teahan and Coaches Larson and Albrecht hold much of the responsibility for the Panthers' Class C Championship. They kept the team going through the heat of September and the biting cold of Novem- ber and taught each member of the team the integral football skills. Furthermore, these gentlemen gave inspiration to the players when the going was rough and, along with Mr. Thompson, lightened the tension which always weighs heavy in a winning locker room. Needless to say, there were many individual stars who sparkled and received their gridiron glory, yet it was the all- round team effort throughout the grueling three-month season which payed off on the scoreboard. the uniforms A 32 to 0 victory means hard, dirty work. Winter Track Team This year the winter track team followed a different program. In the past, the teams competing held all of the running events outdoors on a quarter-mile track. For the T965-i966 season, however, the league secured Common- wealth Armory in Boston for use of their 'I76 yard indoor track. The prospect of running all nine of the track and field events inside attracted a sizeable number of athletes. The boys trained rigorously, and although a winning sea- son eluded their efforts iwon 2, lost 7l, one must remember that they were sometimes competing against large schools from Class A and B. As a freshman, he spends the first few months adjusting to high school and getting to know his classmates through participation in activities such as the Freshman Mixer. As a sophomore, he can participate in varsity sports. ln his iunior year the student becomes more involved in his class activities, especi- ally the Junior Prom. Besides developing personally, underclassmen, comprising the largest segment of the student body, contribute most to school organizations. For the student at Whitman-Hanson, being a part of the school begins the moment he enters the front door and continues through his four high school years. g 75 Freshman Class af. rn I I' IF IQI tk in JG Class Officers Mark LaVangie, Pres., Marsha Browne, V. While the Senior girls organized the football rallies, many of the boys were training to win the league and state championships. John Benson became MBaclc of the Year. To honor the Panthers, Seniors planned the championship dance held at Whitman Town Hall. Long rehearsals resulted in the comical Senior play, MBoys and Ghouls Together. Seniors displayed their acting ability in the annual one-act plays and c'Brigadoon, a Broadway musical. Throughs out his four years in W-SH, one class member, Emmanuel Horowitz, has won many top prizes in science fairs including two firsts in the State Fair. The senior year, the most frantically busy, and yet most warmly rewarding, of our high school years, will linger in our memories for years to come. S 85 JUNIOR PROM THE LOVELIEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR was certainly o fitting title for the Junior Prom on May I4, I965. Sidewalk cafes, an enormous riverboat, and HA Streetcar Named De- sire skillfully disguised the gym as a New Orleans scene. During the grand march Ied by class officers and their dates, the band selected the queen, Miss Cynthia Clifford. Crowned on the gold streetcar throne by Class President John Snow, she was surrounded by her court, Kathy Plausse, Cindy Jefferson, Karen Kelley, Shirley Spinola, Pamela Smith, and Ellen White. Each of the girls then danced with her escort and completed the loveliest night of the year. 'I I CONCLUSION The INTERIM, 1966 yearbook of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School, shows not only the calendar events of the school year, I965-I966, but also the daily life of the students. From d a study ofthe student and his activities, an accurate history of the unique year should emerge. The reader should be able to look at this history in the future as a living record of the past. Above all, the theme of the high school years as the time be- tween youth and responsible adulthood should universalize this history's general interest.
