M...-ild ln recognition of your thirty-tive years as pedagogue and proctor, warden and Confessor, mediator and mentor, we dedicate to you the 1965 lnterim. Your able and understanding guidance has instilled in us vocational determinationg your embodiment ot vigor has rendered to us the motivation for individual ach ievementg your sagacious counsel has provided us with educational purpose. We commend you on your devotion to the education of youth. 2 FOREW RD We of the 1965 lnterim have attempted to create an image of Whitman-Hanson Regional High that will stand the test of time. New and highly creative concepts have been blended with the best of previous volumes to produce what we believe to be a yearbook ot exceptional quality. The i965 Interim is a chronicle of a year of experiences - not of a class, but of a school, not only stressing the ioys and sorrows of the past, but establishing a perspective into what is to come. It is a pause - an Interim - to reflect on life at Whitman-Hanson and, perhaps, to contemplate the future. When Whitman-Hanson alumni look in retrospect years hence, the true value of our new Student Life section will be realized. In it, we have concentrated not on individual personalities, but the qualities of the student's existence that make his school more than an edifice of education. We have endeavored to present the school as well as the student by removing modern achievements in the educational processes from the dubious record of memory, and highlighting them pictorially. The i965 lnterim has captured a part of the excitement and enthusiasm of the high school. lts purpose is to accentuate a panorama ot the school, the student, and the person. His existence is not limited to the classroom, nor the playing field, nor the home. He is active - he discovers outlets for his vigorous endur- ance of life. He is a perfectionist -in his proverbial disenchantment with society, he strives to create and accomplish. He is a creature of action. Amiable campaigning between parties Ok ffl S Q' 'Al' 'y'5 F an-'T I GOVER ME T Removing the study of government and politics from the classroom to the field of action has been one of our greatest achievements in bring- ing the practical side of politics to the students. These words of Social Studies Public Relations Chairman Frank D. Rodick sum- marize the value of Whitman- Hanson's Government program, regarded as a huge success and as a step forward in producing a truly informed citizenry. During the course, the students spent a large measure of their time in practical, rather than theoretical, employment of their knowledge. They were active in the i964 election campaign headquarters in Boston, heard government officials speak on the realities of cam- paigning, and observed their law- makers in action. lv STUDENT POLLSTERS: S. Derochea, R. Chandler, G. O'Roak, W. Ridley, R. Flavell SCIENCE DEPARTME T Providing students with an opportunity to manifest ability and curiosity about their environment, Whitman- Hanson's science courses offer a means of self-instruction through practical application of knowledge gained in the classroom. Our fully-equipped laboratories provide an ideal atmosphere for students to experiment and formulate answers to their own questions about the wonders of nature. Students displaying curiosity and enthusiasm for science experiment and construct proiects for presentation at the annual Science Fair, long one of the school's maior attractions. The important outcome, Principal Elton B. Smith has said of the Science Fair, is the development of the wisdom, character, and ambition that is symbolized by the proiects being presented by these students. 1, l :li 3 ,L F' r I gf F ! ,. 2 The nasograph scientifically indicates a bad cold. , 9 F In Q. . i K i Q' ., ' if l Y , ' .hm-Q , I ' I l ::i..- e l N .- 531 .,w, r 3' 3 r' S L ' xii 1 . 1 . He supports his school,-and he enioys the companionship of his fellow students. The student is a social being. Neither rain nor mud can stop the cheerleaders. Another success for the Junior Class. SCHGOL LIFE The student's first obligation is to take advantage of educational opportunities - a duty to himself. He is attentive in his daily routine of learning, and he gains knowledge, he finds a moment of respite, and is prepared to continue, he is tired, yet finds in his fatigue a sense of accomplishment and well-being. He has added a little more to his accumulation of knowledge. -0 --41 H, ,. f ff- -sg., 1 FQ: g Four-minute freedom Students, concentrate on class discussion. Endeavoring to fulfill the students'avocational interests, faculty members devote valuable time and effort to coach and advise activities designed to aid the student, the school and the community. Clubs and organizations range from interest and hobby groups to service and career organi- zations, providing the youth of Whitman-Hanson with a well-rounded program of education and enjoyment. Cheryl Colson Activities Editor SECTION HEADS: Christine Conway, , Joanne Ravesi, Mark Huska, Cheryl Colson, YEARBCDCK STAFF A great deal of time and effort is inherent in producing a year- book, the work is multiplied when improvements are incorporated and new ideas tried for the first time. Such is the story of the l965 lnterim. The staff spent hundreds of hours planning, de- signing, and adding the improvements that makela good yearbook an exceptional one. Expanding the size of the book, including student life, writing prose that is as vivid verbally as the photographs are pictorially, and such extras as the W-H-R underclass pictures and the Senior Index is to be appreciated in viewing the success of the finished product. The lnterim high- lights progress at Whitman-Hanson -- the Government Course, the Science Department, class and social life enioyed by the students -- all the characteristics that make a school more than iust an edifice of learning. The imagination and effort supplied by the staff is recognizable and recapitulated in the l965 lnterim. The Editors qi 1? F ! The teachers of tomorrow have had a good start in their future work by establishing reading programs in the ele- mentary schools of Whitman and Hanson, tutoring fellow students, and devising a plan to aid substitute teachers in the classroom. Advisors Mrs. Ruth Howe and Mrs. June Millet help members gain a greater knowl- edge of and experience in the teaching profession. FBLA ln order to promote competent business leadership and create more interest and understanding in the intelligent choice of business occupa- tions and careers, the FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA was created in 1963. Advisors Mrs. Dorothea Kostas and Mrs. Winnifred McCarthy aid the students in their understanding of all phases of the commercial world by planning visitations to schools and businesses and inviting former Whitman-Hanson students to speak on their experiences in the world of facts and figures. 4 if X A F T A Standing Mrs Howe E Horowitz, C. AAajorettes ln conjunction with our band, Whitman-Hanson's maiorettes have contributed much to sports fans' en- ioyment. The girls have arranged new and interesting marching routines for the band, and have proven to be an asset to Whitman-Hanson's music department. Chorus Harmony of voice and organization are but two of the goals of Goldenthroat Godfrey's sixty-member mixed chorus. The expansion to more complex musical ar- rangements has been well received at the group's con- certs and assemblies. Band Whitman-Hanson's maestro, Douglas Godfrey, has expanded the activities of our band and has achieved an ascent of success in the past year. The addition of humor in football halftime activities, and concerts performed by the band have heightened the popularity of the band to an unprecedented pinnacle. The climax of an eventful year for our musicians was the exchange concert with the Hampton, New Hampshire, band. The Whitman-Hanson band is truly one of the most active of our school organizations. 1:-Q., -I Q 'S-1 'A' 1 - 1 MAJORETTES D. Ferris, S. Callanan, M. Keneally, W. Wood, V Leach, J. Sayce, C.
