We are the first class to graduate from the new Whitman-Hanson Regional High School. We are proud-proud that we were privileged to pave the way for others in the use of this fine building. We are thankful-thankful that we were given the opportunity to use the many excellent facilities so graciously 'put at our dis- posal. And we are happy-happy that we were able to conduct the various programs that are so vital to a successful senior year. We shall not forget the work, the hardships, and the ultimate joys ot our one wonderful year in this building. As we leave our high school days behind, let us not forget what they have meant to us. Let us not forget the struggles ot our daily ,classes nor the pleasures of our brilliant social lives. Let us not forget our teachers and parents, who have played such an important part in shaping our characters tor the lives that lie ahead for all ot us-the students of today, the leaders ot tomorrow. May our CORNERSTONE be the block upon which we build a life of supreme joy, happiness, and success. For two years, the Regional School Planning Board, together with the townspeople, worked to provide us with a new school. In September, l96O, the work was finished, and about 850 eager stu- 525, ' 'xiff ffqif A E '-3 , Ga Yljiiq-Ci 'T' rj dents and teachers entered the new Whitman- l-lanson Regional High School. To show our deep appreciation tor work they have done, we, the class ot l96l, dedi- cate our book, the l96l Cornerstone, to the Regional School Planning Board, and to our parents and friends, the people of Whitman and Hanson. The worthiness of the cornerstone then becomes a determinant in large degree ot the value of the structure. You have been laying a corner- stone of education upon which your life is being, and will continue to be, built, Education gives you the knowledge which opens the doors to truth, It develops the skills, manual and mental, which you need tor your daily existence. lt shapes the attitudes which govern your thoughts and actions toward people and events. It increases your understanding of the realities of your life as well as your appreciation for aesthetic values. By building your lite within the framework of these tive elements, based on the cornerstone ot o sound education, you can make it a truly strong and beauti- ful experience. Q12 Qgif sfnmns As our Senior year draws to a close, we have finished the first stage of the foundation of our lives. As we set out on our separate paths, we all have one thing in common: a firm founda- tion for all our endeavors. With the expert guidance of our-advisors, Mrs. Howe and Mr. Franey, we hope we have made our last year a tribute to our class and our school. Wi!! pisiuiiguzizzxr. l T7 fR SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Jeffrey Ross, President, Linda Erickson, Secretary, Mr. Franey, Advisor, Linda Salminen Vice President, Mrs. Howe, Advisor, John Campbell, Treasurer, REFLEXIONS Early in September, 1957, occurred an un- heralded event in the annals of time. Through the portals of that ancient institution of learning-Whitman High School-ambled the class of 1961. As we searched the cor- ridors for our assigned classes, we endured the taunts and jeers of the merciless upper- classmen, Our first year we had no class officers, but we were prompt in selecting Lynda Morse, Marilyn Derosier, Jeff Ross, Linda Erickson, and Linda Salminen as Student Council Representatives. Chosen as cheerleaders from our class wer Mary Lynne Farrell and Ruth Moneghan. With the aid of their booming cheers the basketball team copped its first league cham- pionship in many years. Before we knew it we were Sophomores, en- joying shorter school days under the double session system, Under the leadership of our appointed advisors, Mrs. Howe and Mr, Fra- ney, we elected as class officersi Jeff Ross, President, Linda Salminen, Vice-President, John Campbell, Treasurer, and Linda Erick- son, Sec reta ry. Our undefeated football team, strength- ened by many Sophomores, began its impres- sive list of triumphs by abruptly ending Oliver Ames' 28 game winning streak, Added to our faithful cheering group was Gail Pitkanen. Also, we were proud to note, the entire core of the band's baton twirlers consisted of Soph- omore girls-Ann MacGregor, Jean Brother- son, Linda Erickson, Ellen MacGregor, and Joanne Durand. Our social event of the year was our dance, A Night in Chinatown, which was held on a dismal, slushy evening in spring. The de- corations were elaborate, and the refresh- ments included Chinese fortune cookies. After summer had passed, we returned to the same old building, but now we were the Panthers of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School. We re-elected our highly dependable class officers and Mrs. Howe and Mr. Franey continued as our advisors. On November 13th -Friday no less-we held our first social event, Swinging on a Star. Although not undefeated this year, our football team had an impressive five won, one lost, two tied record. Our ring committee made an important de- cision-it chose a ring to be standard for future years. Our highest ranking class members were recognized by being inducted into the Na- tional Honor Society. They were: Brian Bereika, Sandra Budlong, Linda Flavell, Ar- lynne Lawless, Ann MacGregor, Ellen Mac- Gregor, Austin Zipeto, Fred Bail, Richard Hol- man, Frank Rowell, Mark Sweeney, Robert Vokey, Nancy Marsh, Connie Pearson, Vir- ginia White, and Mary Wood. On May 6, in the town hall, we held our prom, the Junior Promenade , over which reigned queen Gail Pitkanen and her court. Everyone worked many hours to insure its success, and fine weather made it a night we shall long remember. As June rolled around, we anticipated being the superior Seniors in our new school build- ing, after being the underdogs for three years. When September arrived, we once again found ourselves wandering around-lost amid all the modern furnishings of the new school. In appreciation for their devoted work, we retained the class officers who had served us the two previous years, We were privileged to be the first to hold a social in our beautiful, indirectly-lighted cafeteria, our Senior dance, Three Coins in a Fountain. Under the leadership of Brian and Jeff, our football team evened out the season with a four and four record. Soon after the season closed, we as a class, honored the football team with the customary banquet. As-we write this, we are yet to put on our Class Play, write our Spellman Essays, and enjoy the festivities of graduation. We will then be ready to journey forth, knowing that we have been well-prepared to fulfill our am- bitions in life. Class Motto: Ad Astra Per Aspera-To The Stars Through Difficulties. Class Flower: red rose. Class Colors: red and white. SENIOR CLASS ODE Michael Sweeney-Rona ld Meye r Melody: Hail Massachusetts! Mrs. Gilbreth is the constant buffer between her husband and her children, especially be- ltween Anne, the oldest child, and her father. Anne is seventeen and has never had a date, With her sisters' help, she creates many amusing situations while attempting to per- suade her father that she is old enough to have that someone special. There are four considerations to be reviewed before a student is admitted, He must obtain honor grades. He must be a leader, tor leader- ship is necessary in lite. Character is also es- sential, that of a member of the Honor So- vu! ciety must be above reproach. Lastly, a mem ber must be ready to serve not only his school but his home and his country. These qualities of character, leadership, service, and scholar ship are vital to anyone who wishes to become a member for without all four qualities it is certain that he will not be admitted.
