J--,, xlnwn Q. I FOREWORD As our senior year at Whitman- Hanson Regional High School is coming to a close. we are looking forward to new horizons. The rays of light that will shine on these new horizons are the same ones that cast highlights on our experiences during the past four years. For each one of us, there have been different events and incidents which stand out in our school career. We have tried to capture some of these highlights which will recall to all. the fond moments which we as a class have been responsible for. and for each one of us will be a cherished memory as we depart to follow our own horizons. +12 -,, asf- - , . x,1 -, vi. ' the hoo ts of per With Regional High Sc new horizons for the studen Considering this, we feel it only pro to dedicate this yearbook to those who , made it possible. To the grocer, banker, . lumber, to all those who have provided us with these new horizons we humbly this book. dedic ate EDWIN W. ROWELL, Superintendent of School! That place at which the earth and sky appear to come together is our horizon. We may consider this to be the farthest point at which we can see anything on earth, We realize that the horizon may be limited in its distance from us by hills, buildings, or any other obstruction. We know that as we reach increasingly higher points, whether by climbing a tree, a toll builds ing, or a hill, that our horizon will increase. The more effort we expend, the higher we go, the farther we can see Our horizon expands, Let us change our line of thought from a description of our physical horizon to the idea of our mental one When we understand on idea, we say I see lust as truly as when we first see a new view from the top Of a hill, One of the mazn purposes for spending so much time and energy on your education over the years has been to help you to see more, to have a greater understanding of your world and your relationship to it. Unlike the measurable distance of our physical horizon, our mental horizon seems to be unlimited. By risng over such obstacles as preyudrce, intolerance, arovrncialtsm, and ignorance, mankind understands more and more In this way you can expand your mental horizons forever. l extend my personal congratulations and best wishes for future success and happiness to the members of the Class ot l96O. Early in September of 1956 we walked apprehensively through the doors anxiously hoping for the best but secretly expecting the worst. Barb Zeller and Muriel Corliss led our Freshman Class as we cheered for Wayne Ross, our only repre- sentative on the varsity football team at our first foot- ball rally. Though our feeble cheers were barely heard above the din, no one could mistake the sound of the bass drum as played by Chuck Chamberlain. Many eager Freshmen joined Mrs. Hobby's Epi- curean Club at which they heard interesting talks on ancient civilizations and her beloved camel, Pepsi-Cola. After enjoying a summer vacation we returned and elected our Sophomore officers: President, Edward San- tos, Vice-President, Linda Swenson, Treasurer, Bruce Tirrellg and Secretary, Leslie Nutter. Mrs. Lapworth :md Mr. Bailey kindly consented to act as our class advisors. The next spring we eagerly began to plan for April in Bloom, our first dance. Much to our surprise April in Bloom was coincidental with a late blizzard, and on that dreamy evening the gentle spring zephyrs dumped six inches of wet snow. However, it was very successful and everyone enjoyed himself to the utmost. Glad to be out of school for the summer, we were even happier to return - at least some of us. Our football team, including numerous Juniors, enjoyed an undefeated season and they were proclaimed Champs of the Southeastern Conference. The results of our fall election showed james Di- Mestico as Presidentg Linda Swenson, Vice-Presidentg Bruce Tirrell, Treasurerg and Mary-Anne Hayes, Sec- retary. They were to lead our class throughout the junior year. Soon after the football season ended we staged our junior dance entitled Honolulu Holiday. Financially it was one of the biggest successes the school ever ex- perienced. lt was supervised by our advisors, Mrs. Lap- worth and Mr. Bailey. The basketball team supported by Ray Agius, Bruce Tirrell and Waj'ne Ross also enjoyed a success- ful season. my As April rolled around we began to prepare our Spellman Essays , many of us stayed up into the wee hours of the morning desperately trying to meet the deadline. joan Smith and Cynthia Lunenburg copped two of the three prizes. In the spring a great honor was bestowed on many of our Junior classmates as they were inducted into theiNational Honor Society. For many months we had been anticipating out junior Prom. On that balmy evening in May we en- joyed ourselves in a beautifully decorated gym under the reign of Queen Mary Marble. As we left school in june we were proud to be officially Seniors. When we returned the next autumn we elected our officers right away. They were James DiMestic0, President, Linda Swenson, Vice-Ptesidentg Bruce Tirrell, Treasurerg and Mary-Anne Hayes, Secretary, exactly the same as the previous year. After a mediocre start our football team caught fire and did an excellent job for the remainder of the season, ending with only one defeat. Thanksgiving Day was made complete with a thrilling victory over Abing- ton, our arch-rivals. Autumn Leaves, our Senior dance, was enjoyed by all who attended and, like our other dances, was highly successful. As our Good Government Day representative we chose Linda Swenson to represent us at the State House in Boston. Soon afterwards the corridors were covered by campaign posters for a local government - the first of its kind. This election was accompanied by speeches and other political rabble-rousing, highlighted by the brilliant campaign of Robert Pratt whose platform in- cluded free lollipops for potential supporters. Now, as we are once again laden with the bur- dens of the Spellman Essay, the Science Fair, term pa- pers, College Boards and numerous other responsibili- ties, we reflect upon our memories of the happiest four years of our lives and look forward with anticipation toward graduation and its accompanying activities, as well as unlimited horizons. However, through teamwork and sheer lighting spirit the Panthers were leading contenders of the Southeastern conference championship, The backlield, built around the lightining-fast co-captains .lohn Fernandez and XVayne Ross and quarterbacks Dick Bail and Paul Nugent, was touted to be the most dangerous in the conference. The line, led by seniors Bruce Emery, Bruce Tirrell, jim Twomey, and john Conroy was shaping up into a solid wedge. To round out the offense, the kicking duties were placed in the able feet of Dave Hall. After a slow start the Panthers proved thenselves worthy of the coaches confidence by winding up the season with 5 wins, l loss, and 2 ties. ln what proved to be one of the most exciting games of the season, Xwhitman-I-lanson pulled off a I6-8 win over a very strong Middleboro team, at the latter's home field. In this game, Wfayne Ross ground out most of the yardage on buck series, while 2 john Fernandez scored the first touchdown on a short f buck and provided the clincher with a spectacular 60 yard run. The line also proved itself in this game by holding off the ferocious second-half drives of Middle- , W 'l,.,, H boro. The boys sang in the bus all the way back to , , ., . Mrs. Howe and Mr. lfraney continue as advisors. Our first social function was the junior dance on Friday, November IS. The theme of Swing- ing on a Star was effectively carried out by the decorating committee. The choice of our rings became a momentous decision since we are the lirst class to do so under the name of the regional school. The class voted to accept a copyrighted design, and we hope to establish a tradition. Class members actively participate in extra-curricular activities. including lT.T.i-X., lf.N.A., Math Club, Band, and also football and basketball. The following members of the class were elected to the National Honor Society: Brian Bc-reilta, Sandra Budlong, Linda Flavell, Arlynne Lawless, Ann MacGregor, Ellen MacGregor, Austin Zipeto. lfred' erick Bail, Richard Holman, Frank Rowell, Mark Sweeney, Robert Voltey, Nancy Marsh, Connie Pearson. Starting the first of our four years of high school, we found that we had much to learn. With the help and guidance of the faculty we soon got used to such things as make-up slips and passes. Although we didn't elect class officers this year, we were represented on Student Council by: Nancy Willis, Brenda johnson, Dennis Shay, jonathan Nutter, George Peterson, and Raymond Fish. Freshman members participating in the band were: Jane Ewell, Leonard Baker, Richard Baker, Ernest Wilbur, Milton Clark, Cari Webster, Charles Senechal, Kenneth Brown, Salvatore Ciccio, and john Murphy. We look forward to electing officers next year and joining in other school activities. We extend our best wishes to the Class of 1960, and we are looking forward to the day when we too will be seniors.
