In war the price of victory is tragic because it is paid by the lives of those valiant men and women for whom the future usually holds the greatest promise. Every college in our land contributed to the glorious victory which our armies won on the field of battle. More than eleven hundred Whitman men and women served their nation in the great struggle just ended. The College is naturally proud of this record, but it mourns the loss of those who made the supreme sacrifice. Their names will always find a place of honor. On these pages are the pictures of the Whitman men who by their faith and deeds have joined the valiant of our nation. lt is, however, not enough to record their military service only. Their dreams of the future have become our responsibility. The new Whitman Student Center is to be erected as a living memorial to them and as a constant reminder of the service of Whitman men and women in both world wars. But even this is not enough. We at Whitman must join hands with those valiant men, carrying on those ideals for which they gave their lives. We must ever strive for a better Whitman, a better America, a better world. Winslow S.
