Every college in our land contributed to the glorious victory which our armies won on the field of battle. More than eleven hundred Whitman men and women served their nation in the great struggle just ended. The College is naturally proud of this record, but it mourns the loss of those who made the supreme sacrifice. Their names will always find a place of honor. On these pages are the pictures of the Whitman men who by their faith and deeds have joined the valiant of our nation. lt is, however, not enough to record their military service only. Their dreams of the future have become our responsibility. The new Whitman Student Center is to be erected as a living memorial to them and as a constant reminder of the service of Whitman men and women in both world wars. But even this is not enough. We at Whitman must join hands with those valiant men, carrying on those ideals for which they gave their lives. We must ever strive for a better Whitman, a better America, a better world. Winslow S. JA, ADMINISIRATION i E xy if l Q bf L QQ A Winslow S. Anderson, SCD., LL.D ...Q-' -mi By President, Deans, Faculfy Mr. Douglas V. McClane serves Whitman, his alma mater, in a variety of posts. Principally Director of Admissions and Registrar, he is also Faculty Secretary, chief recruiting agent for new Whitmanites, and a congenial person whenever you en- counter him on the campus. Prob- ably the first person you knew as an entering freshman, Mr. McClane has a faculty for remembering names and faces of the students he ushers into Whitman. Dean William R. Davis, known to freshmen as Dean of the Division of Letters and Arts, is known to upper- classmen as Professor of English. Beloved by English majors for his lively converastion and friendly chuckle, he is to all students the embodiment of what they call the Whitm:n Spirit . Dr. Mabel Barbee Lee, Vtlhitmans acting Dean of Women, is always interested in talking about anything concerning Whitman girls. Friendly and likeable, she is an efficient Dean, and, as an advocate of progressive education and student government, she has done much to further these principles at Whitman, Mrs. Lee is capably helped hy Helen Kinsinger. Dr. Chester C. Maxey holds forth in his office in Memorial Hall as Dean of the Division of Social Sciences and Professor of Political Science. Dean Maxey took graduate work at the University of Wisconsin and Colum- bia University, but at heart he is a native Whitmanite, having been con- nected with the college since l925. Dr. Charles J. Armstrong left his position as middle-man between Whitman and the Navy V-l2 this year to become Dean of Administration and to take over the all-important job of Veterans Counselor. ln this post he helps our returning servicemen to feel at home here. He came to Whitman three years ago from Brown University and Rollins College. Of- ficially, Dr. Armstrong is Assistant Professor of Classics. Dr. Frank L. Haigh, Professor of Chemistry and Dean of the Division of Basic Sciences, keeps a watchful eye on the would-be chemists of Billings Hall. Master of things scien- tific, he teaches courses from be- ginning chem to advanced inorganic and physical chemistry, and directs scientific freshmen in planning their college programs. t Eli T. Jim Craver. His cheerful and ap- pealing personality will be deeply missed by all those who knew him. Sincere and friendly in manner, Jim based his lite upon ideals worthy ot the respect ot his fellow students. He entered the army immediately upon graduating from Walla Walla High School, and aiter serving two years as an aerial gunner in the Air Corps, came to Whitman in March ot this year to begin the spring term. lt was during this semester that a tragic accident robbed Whitman oi one oi its tinest supporters. IN MGMORIAM We shall remember .... Harry Bragg. Though death ended his short college career in September, l945, Harry made a lasting impression on those who had the privilege ot knowing him. A member ot the Navy V-l2 Unit, Harry returned to school after his discharge from the Navy. ln his two semesters at Whitman he won the admiration and whole hearted appreciation ot his classmates, and etsablished an enviable record ot achievement in scholarship, forensics, and fraternity. FRESHMAN CLASS Beginning its college Career under the leadership of president, Bill Bell, assisted hy vice president, Sue Meyers, secretary, Marnell Strom, and treasurer, Elizabeth Chastain, the Class ol '49 gave the frosh plays, helped with the carni- val, assisted in campus doings. SOPHOMORE CLASS Loyal supporters of the Student Union plans, the Class of '48, led by Jan Nye, president, Ellie Barnes, vice-president, and Barbara Dobson, secretary-treasurer, produced Out of the Frying Pan , movie sponsored at the Liberty Theatre, pro- ceeds went to the Student Union. The Mission casaba sguad completed a fairly successful round, especially outside the con' ference. Before the conference schedule started, the team had split with Gon- zaga, dropped a very exciting series with Washington State, and split the thrilling Montana series, losing the second game in an overtime period. Whitman started its league play by taking two from the College of Idaho. Next they dropped two very close ones to Linfield College, ln subsequent games the Missionaries were tripped by C. P. S., Willamette and the champion University of British Columbia. Throughout the year the flashy ball handling of Captain Buss Hobbs and Harold Haupt, and the steady games played by Dick Campbell, Bill Bell, Bob O'Dell and John Heath were a source of inspiration to the rest of the team. X co of .19 Saunders, Bowers, Ackley, Grant, Lewis, Davies TENNIS The l946 racquet squad, though handicapped by a small turnout and lack of tournament experience, was a typical exam- ple of the sportsmanship and spirit usually found in Whitman teams. First match of the year was with the Walla Walla Air Base, which the Missions won in handy fashion, 6-l. Next came tilts with the powerful Washington State squad, the University of ldaho, and the University of Montana, all crowded into one week. Although they lost all of these matches, the Whitman netsters furnished stubborn resistance, almost every game being hard-fought, and the teams improving with each tourney. Still to be faced were the University of Portland, the conference matches, and Willamette. Highlights of the season were the singles play of Dick Saunders and the play of the first doubles team of Saunders and Bob Grant. Thanks should be given to Coach Cy Bowers for a good job done well. The conference schedule opened with six straight wins over the College ot Idaho in a home and home series. At this point the team needed only one win out of the remaining six games with a weak Coyote squad to capture the leagues eastern division championship. This lett them to play the Western division winners, Pacific University. ln the championship play-ofts the play was highlighted, as it had been all year, by the steady pitching ot Mitchell, Ashmore, and Scribner, and the timely hitting ot Ogden, Costello and catcher John Richardson, 3 i Martin, Standlie, Jensen, Rhay, Bowles Bell, Keenan, Doty, Perinqer, Kunkel Griffin, Munqer, Thompson, Day, Cline Munger, Griffin, , two ldaho men start the two mile. TRACK The Mission spikesters have had a very good year, losing only two meets, to the University ot Montana and the powerful University ot Idaho squads. Bill Martin's boys ran off once more with the conference title. The return ot such veterans as Bob Rabbit Bhay, Boy Grittin, and Ray Bowles, plus the fine performances ot Jack Thompson in the sprints, Bob Day in the half-mile, Norm Jensen in the quarter-mile, and Bill Bell in the hurdles have helped bring Whit- man back to its pre-war track record. 3 X K avi ai?
