The Whitko FFA had a very good year. They started out the school year by helping the town of South Whitley with the Fall Festival. Eighty percent of the chapter were involved in five different events. Seventeen new members were installed in October. The state champion dairy judging team traveled to the National Contest in November. The local team placed 6th in competition with teams from all over the U.S. In December the chapter sponsored the hay and grain show. Tim Brubaker was the over all winner. During January-April the local members spent a large amount of time preparing for and participating in local, county, area and state contest. In all forty-three members took part in judging contests, proficiency awards, leadership contests and garden seed sales. The local chapter was named the top chapter in the district at the District Convention. Two judging teams, livestock and crops, qualified to compete in the state contests in June. The local banquet was held on April 12. Mrs. Richards was selected as the 1984 Honorary member. Members are looking forward to activities this summer at the state convention. Tood Gilbert, Marty Manuel, and Tim Brubaker will receive their Hoosier Farmer Degrees. This is the highest degree the state can give. Our varsity and junior basketball teams were “‘fast- breaking” towards successful seasons, and the class of °86 was busy “breaking” into new activities and renewing interests in old ones. Among the new activities were Sunshine Society, OEA, and the National Honor So- ciety. Old ones were sports, French Club, band and FFA. A memorable experience for the kids who took Biology II was the dissecting of a rat. It’s doubtful anyone will soon forget the weeks he spent on the “experience.” This year, members of the class won indi- vidual honors. Karla Sweeden won “Miss Congeniality” at Homecoming for the sec- ond year in a row, and Karen Engleberth placed first in OEA state competition, , earning the right to compete at nationals. Also, the class as a whole won the float competition at Homecoming. Some of the year is caught on film here. Enjoy remembering as you look through the section! We are a unique mixture of personalities, interests, and behaviors and have a drive to succeed that keeps us going. We are willing to try new, interesting, and sometimes embarrasing things. There are quite a few advantages to being a freshman. One of the best things about being a freshman is that we have the opportunity to meet so many new friends. We are able to choose most of our classes for the first time and there are many extra-curricular activities and sports that we may join. The freshman sports teams definitely look forward to improving and making Whitko sports teams better than ever. Band camp is another fun and exciting experience that we may have when we graduate from eighth grade and become freshmen. And, best of all, we look forward to, of course, one day being seniors. Here are some of our feelings about having been freshmen: “Being a freshman is a feeling you can’t duplicate.”—Tony Kinney “Being a freshman was a good time.”—Rich Lysaght “The worst thing about being a freshman is ‘being a freshman’.”—Monda Sievers “Being frosh material is horrifying!”’—Lewis Yingst “T think my freshman year has been the most fun of all.”—Nancy Huston “Being a freshman was like being a baby.”—Kim Demske ‘Being a freshman made me feel superior to kids younger than I was.”—Tonya Barrett “Being a senior would be nicer.” —Melisa Hathaway Paula Adkins Mike Albert Kim Anders Mitch Anderson William Austin Bobby Baker Tonya Barrett y fl Ronald Betts Brian Boocher Adam Bosaw Sherri Carlin Wayne Clawson Kathy Coble Wendy Cooper Kim Copeland 75 76 Sandra Craft Adam Craig Melissa Craig Sean Creviston Tracey Davis Trixy Dazey Jeff Defrain Kim Demske Pat Dimmick Dianna Dingus Randy Dormans Delaine Due Stacey Duggins Jim Eiler Cami Elder Danielle Elder Bobbi Elliott Tara Fancil Brian Fawcett Shelley Fisher Duane Foellinger Nancy Fortman Karen Fox Mariah French Dana Geer Renee Gilbert Al Gilson Don Gilson Betsy Goodrich Tammy Grandstaff Vincent Groniger Roland Hall Carla Harmon Kay Harris Tina Harris Fred Hathaway Melisa Hathaway Connie Hawkins John Hawkins Monique Hawkins Anita Heintzelman Randy Helblig Frank Hendrickson Rick Hobbs John Hoffert Ruth Hoskins Greg Howard Kathy Howard Mike Howk Scott Huff Quetta Hurd Nancy Huston Jim Jeffries Don Jenkins Martha Joy Kindra Jubinville Brian Keel Leigh Keirn Tony Kinney Randi Kintigh Mike Kline Brian Knoop Mark Knoop Vallerie Kreider Doug Krull Kathie Lackey Walter Lambert Jarrad Lancaster 77 78 Jennifer Lancaster Donnie Landis Steve Lavergne James Loe John Lortie Dean Lott Donna Love Rich Lysaght Heather McCormick Jackie McKeighen Debbie Miller Mike Miller Vicky Mink Roger Mullins Robert Ochoa Carol Orr Bobbie Perkins Kathy Pfleiderer Shelly Poe John Prater Debbie Reid Bryan Roberts Kerry Ronk Amy Rose Susan Rose Sandee Rufner Shanna Ruse Terrie Sanders Penny Schauber Jeff Schumaker Charlie D. Jeff is the first athlete from Whitko to be named to the Indiana All Stars. Jeff is pictured at the right during the game in Kentucky. The 6°4” Peters averaged 28.7 points per game during his senior year and broke five school records. During his ’83-’84 season Jeff averaged 60% of field goals, 80% of free throws, and had 136 assists. His finesse on the court kept Whitko fans enthralled throughout the season. Bishop Dwenger Coach Bob Herber said: “T was here when we played Peru when Macy (Kyle) was a senior, and we were u nfortunate enough to play Harding when Masters (Jim) was a junior and senior. And I tell you, he’s in their category. I really believe that. If he doesn’t pick apart the defense with his shooting, he’ll do it with his passing.” Jeff will be attending Notre Dame in the fall of 1984. “Digger” Phelps stated: “Jeff Peters is a real competitor whose outside shooting is under-rated. Before his college career is over, he will prove he can play with the best of them. He’s got a good head for the game. He has good court sense, and he handles the ball well.” Jeff, we at Whitko are very proud of you, and we wish you great success at Notre Dame. The all-school assembly was designed to honor students who excel academically in the classroom, have perfect attendance, or deserve special recognition for their efforts. The recipients of these awards were selected by their teachers. Selections were based upon the student’s grade in that subject, the student’s attitude and enthusiasm for the subject, and the student’s degree of motivation. Hopefully, this Honor Awards Assembly wi ll become a tradition at Whitko. It is of vital importance that we recognize the special attributes and remarkable performance of these outstanding individuals.
