Mr.R.V. Reed: Principal 197 1-1983 During the past four years as a student here at Whitko, there has always been a friendly, familiar face in the halls and class- rooms. That is of course, our principal, Mr. Richard V. Reed. Richard Reed was born at South Bend Hospital in 1926. He grew up at St. Joseph and Spencerville Indiana. Mr. Reed graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1942. He then started working on a farm for Dick Crow. Shortly there after he went into the Army and served in World War II. Following that, he attended Purdue for three years, then met and married his wife, Loma, in 1948. In 1949 his first of seven children was born. Also in 1949 he started teaching at Pierceton High School. In 1954 he was elevated to the post of principal of Pierceton High School. He later transferred from Pierceton to Whitko High School as principal for twelve years. Mr. Reed, while principal at Whitko High School, has led with foresight and vigor. He has left many positive influences on student and faculty alike. Comments are heard in the hallways and classrooms. “It just won’t be the same without Mr. Reed.” “Sure glad I’m graduating; I can still call Mr. Reed my princi- pal!” “Maybe we didn’t always agree with him, but the task at hand was always completed.” “I just want to say ‘hey,’ we are all going to miss Mr. Reed.” After twelve years of dedicated service to Whitko High, Mr. Reed is surely going to be missed. Mrs. Betty Kaye-Smith: Teacher 1971-19 For twenty-six years, the field of education has been blessed with the teaching abilities of Mrs. Elizabeth Kaye-Smith. This spring after many years of teach- ing at Whitko, Mrs. Kaye-Smith is retiring. Mrs. Kaye-Smith has always enjoyed teaching. She has studied in several universities, some of which are Mexico City, Indiana University, University of Madrid, Wheaton, Illinois, Northwestern University, Manchester College, Mi- ami University and Colorado University. She has received her B.A. and M.A. degrees. At the present she is teaching English and Spanish. During her many years at Whitko, Mrs. Kaye-Smith has taught English 9 and 10, Spanish I and II, Nature and Ecology, and Mass Media. She has also been the sponsor for Spanish Club and Yearbook. She is a hard-pushing teacher, but students always left her class with a lot of knowledge.” Mrs. Kaye-Smith is not just a teacher but an adventurer as well. She loves to travel with her husband. She has visited almost every country, and she feels very fortunate to be able to do so. She also holds a pilot’s license. In her spare time she likes to go swimming. Whitko will miss her devotion and her teaching ability. We, the students of Whitko High School, wish Mrs. Kaye-Smith the very best and we will all miss her. 65 Down The Hollowed Halls, The Best Is Yet To Come... THE MOVE The 1982 Whitko girl’s volleyball team finished a disappointing season 8-13. The team struggled through injuries which sidelined 4 of 6 starters all or most of the season. The team opened the season defeating Huntington Cath and losing narrowly to Carroll. After a 3-2 start key injuries began to take their toll. The team showed well in their own 8 team tourney which was won by Ft. Wayne Concordia. The season ended at sectionals in Col. City as the Cats bowed again to Carroll. IMPROVEMENT : The inexperienced Whitko Football team went through a season of frustration. With only five seniors on the squad, underclasmen gained needed experience. The frustrating part of the season was the fact that of the eight losses, six were by a total of 22 points or an average of less than one touchdown per game. Hopefully with the return of many lettermen next season, Whitko will return to its winning ways. | 95 WRESTLERS WIN FORTH SCOREBOARD Record Cats Opp. Central Noble forfeit Manchester 47 16 Columbia City 2 8s Wabash S| Wawasee iy Al Northfield 42 24 _ Tipp Valley 56 —COG North Miami Ss). lib New Haven, DeKalb 3rd place Southside West Noble 48 23 Oak Hill 2 f Southwood 30.)Ci3 Conference 2nd place Busco 50 «614 Sectional Ist place Varsity Wrestling Squad: Front, Bill Smith, Chris Miller, Stacy Hammel, Keith Russell, 2nd Row, Dennis| Anweiler, Dave Love, Chad VanKirk, Jeff Loe, Back, Coach Hoopingarner, Todd Helvey, Brad Hough, Troy} Culp, Darrell Mast, and Coach Sprunger. Arc of Triumph, Paris Roman Arena, Nimes On March 25, thirteen students left for a ten-day trip to Europe. The group began their trip in Paris, France, spending three days touring the famous city and its surroundings. The tour included a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral, Place de la Condorde, and the elegant Champs Elysee leading to the Arc de Triamph, and an evening boat ride down the Seine River. They also enjoyed an afternoon’s excursion to the magnificent palace of Versailles built by Louis XIV. An overnight train ride took the group to the southern village of Avignon, home of the fourteenth century Papal Place and the Pont du Guard aquaduct. The group continued to Nimes, famous for its ancient Roman ruins. A drive along the beautiful French Riviera lead the group through the picturesque towns of Arles and Aix-en Provence, then on to Nice where the Alps came down to the Mediterranean shores. After a visit to Monaco, a final drive through imposing Alpine scenery lead them to Geneva, Switzerland, where the students spent their final days visiting the largest French-speaking city in Switzerland. This trip was a culmination for stu- dents who enthusi astically studied the French language and customs throughout the school year. The group represents students from the first through fourth year French classes offered at Whitko under Mrs. Long. Shawna went to state Febru- ary 6-13, 1983. She as well as 39 other girls shared a week of hard work, fun and new friendships. The most exciting event of the week was when each girl got to meet America’s Junior Miss Susan Hamett. This week at state made Shaw- na’s senior year even more exciting.
