Upon arrival, one could choose to dine in one of two rooms. One featured the band and dance floor, while the other held a magnificient view of the swimming pool and garden. Students enjoyed a dinner of BBQ Chicken, potatoes and salad, then danced until midnight to the music of the Steel Sound Band. All of this along with memory pictures taken at pool side, made it a night that we will all dream sweetly of. 1,2,3: Rex Coble and Cathy Brumbaugh were crowned 1982 Prom King and Queen by 1981 Queen, Jackie Wilkinson, and Jr. Class Pres., Denny Kessie. 4: The Royal Dance was shared by the faculty. 5: These faculty members seem to be enjoying themselves! 6: Amy (Helm) and her father are seriously thinking of using this picture for Mr. Helm’s next campaign! 7,8: Many people found eating BBQ Chicken, gracefully, difficult, but ... 9: Deb, Pam, and Greg had no problems! 10,11: Hats made a big appearance this year. In December they went caroling at Timbercrest Nursing Home, followed by a party at Teresa Patrick’s. They also sponsored several assemblies: Mel Kenyon, a midget race driver; Sojourn, a Christian rock band; and a program on alcohol and drugs at the Middle School. In the fall of 1981 the Club went to Chicago, and at Christmas they had a dinner chez Jill Renee Reed. The team also runs the daily announcements, does special programs, and attends the District Speech meet in April, staying overnight in a motel for the two-day event. At the spring awards banquet, the team honored Scott Johnson with the Distinction Award, as he was the team most consistent placer, and Aaron Bales with the Honor Award for improving the most. The National Honor Society inducted 22 new members in 1982, including seven seniors, eight juniors, and seven sophomores. The Future Farmers of America had their usually successful year again in 1981-82. They competed in over forty contests and placed well at almost every one. Heading off the long list of winners were the livestock judging teams. The main team placed second at the Purdue Invitational, second in Beef Judging at Purdue and fourth in Questions, and placed tenth at Junior Pork Day. Their two livestock judging teams were also first and second in the coun- ty and first and fourth in the area. Terry Werstler, Ed Lynch, and Scott Pattison competed in the WKJG-TV 33 FFA Quiz. Scott Pattison and Terry Werstler started the contest off with the first win, then Scott, unable to compete, was replaced by Ed, who along with Terry went on to become the cham- pions. The crops team was first in county and third in area competition, so they will advance to state this summer. The farm business management team was fifth in state, the mechanics team was tenth in state, and the dairy judging team was sixth at the Purdue Invitational. Local chapter winners of the Proficiency and Leadership Awards did well at District contests, with those placing first going on to state competition this summer. The top thirty point- getters in the chapter got their choice of going to either the Indy Super Pull or a Purdue basketball game. The chapter also assisted the Whitley County Soil Conservation Service in setting up a no-till test plot. Other non-farming activities included participating in South Whitley clean-up day, helping Lions Club members unload fruit, and providing the school with its Christmas tree. below left—The FFA teams show off the trophies they just won at District competition. right—Terry Werstler and Ed Lynch pose with their WKJG-TV 33 FFA Quiz awards. Once there, she spent a week in a whirlwind of activity. In addition to daily rehearsals, the girls managed to tour the State House, meet with the Mayor of Frankfort and dine with Governor Orr. The girls were also responsible for sewing and modeling an outfit that reflected their personality, and planning a “Kraft Party’. The number of guests, entertain- ment, theme and decorations, and a menu using at least three Kraft products were to be included in each girl’s plan. This spring, after twenty-three years of teaching in the Whitko area, Mrs. Boly is retiring. “T think she’s . . . the best English teacher this school has ever seen.” “It will be a long time before another teacher as good as she comes along.” Mrs. Boley was born in Haver, Montana, and moved to Illinois when she was seven. After graduating from Teacher’s College High School in Charleston, Illinois, she attended Eastern Illinois University, majoring in English and speech education. She graduated in 1941 and married her husband the same year. After a short time teaching when her husband was drafted for World War II, she became mainly a homemaker, until she moved to Warsaw in 1953. For a few years she then taught at Silver Lake, but in 1959 she started her long career as a Whitko teacher. She has eight grandchildren by her four children, who, interestingly enough, all became involved in education themselves, either as teachers or administrators. After retiring she plans to do “all the things I don’t have time to do now,” such as birdwatch- ing, hiking, knitting, and traveling. Probably her most important activity, though, will be her writing. “I love to write letters, journals. I’d like to be able to sell something someday, but that’s a dream.” She is currently working on a book entitled HARRIET. It’s based on the life of her grandmother, who was a pioneer woman in early Montana. Eunice Thompson: Colleges attended: Ball State and Indiana University. She teaches Intensive Office Lab and Accounting. Miss T. has taught for 24 years. She became a teacher so that she could help other people in a meaningful way. Her hobbies include traveling and making quilts during the summer. Bradley Walker: Colleges attended: Vandercook and Ball State University. He teaches all the bands. He has taught for 8 years and likes to travel on his motorcycle during the summer. His former band teacher was most influential in his decision to become a teacher. Mary Wendell: Colleges attended: Manchester and Ball State University. She teaches Home Economics and has taught for 25 years. Mrs. Wendell likes to travel during the summer. Her former Home Economics teacher influenced her to teach. Another passion she hopes to have more time for is volunteer work for such organizations as the Bowen Center and Meals on Wheels. “T think she’s a tremendous teacher and person, too.” “One of the few teachers who really CARES.” When she first started teaching, she had both English and speech classes. Soon, however, she was teaching only English and literature, as she re- alized that’s what she liked the most. “I think I’m just a student of literature myself,” she says, and she enjoys learning with her students. What she enjoys most about teaching, however, is watching her students learn. “It’s exciting to see kids learn if they’re interested; it thrills me. You can be- come really involved with your students.’’ Which can lead to pain. “We've lost some people along the way, such as in Vietnam. I think it’s tragic. You take it personally if you care about those kids. It’s so needless. Of course, we’ve had fun, too, such as the trips to Europe and when we’ve had kids over to our house.” “T like her . . . I think she’s conscientious.” “She was the best teacher I ever had. She expected a lot from us, so we gave a lot to her. I found my- self WANTING to give my best. That’s what makes a great teacher.” What do YOU think makes a good teacher? ““You have to WANT to teach, really enjoy it. There’s not so many privileges anymore; teachers used to be respected more. You have to make the kids know you want to teach; you have to work hard. It’s a hard job if it’s done right.” Consequently, a good student has to “want to learn, has to be self-disciplined. I think a good student can be a good citizen.” “T really have a lot of respect for her. A real professional.” “I think she has class. That just about says it all.” 122 | SUPPORT PERSONNEL Sue Richards: She has been the receptionist for 2 years, and has worked | year as a Title 1 aide.
