Every decade seems to have a style of its own, something unique and new. There were the Gay 90's, the Roaring 20's and the Rock and Roll 50's, but what about the 70's? Here are some of the highlights: Lori Juillerat, Laura Shepherd and Lori Smith do their version of The Streak!'' at the E.M.S. Gong Show. ''Oh yes, they call me the streak, fastest thing on two feet!'' The fads of the 70's included baring it all and streaking, or baring a portion and mooning ... Fitness was ''in'', both physical and mental. There were yoga and T.M. for the mind and soul, while jogging and health food kept the body in shape ... For the fast life there was fast-food: McDonalds, Burger King, Burger Chef, Wendy's, and Arby's ... Everything seemed manufactured for convenience. There were drive-up windows at banks and restaurants, new math for easier learning, and calculators for quick figuring ... Ina search for religion many people turned to cults. Moonies and members of the Unification Church were the most familiar cult members ... A new language came into use with the appearance of the C.B. radio. We were all on the look out for ''smokies''. Well, signin' off now, catch ya later, good buddy! =SPORTS ''The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat'' were felt strongly in the 1972 and 1976 Olympic games. They brought with them peaceful competition and the horror of unrest between the nations with the Arab terrorist attack on the Israel competitors in 1972. Many heroes came from the games including Mark Spitz, Bruce Jenner, Vassili Alexeev and Dorothy Hamill. Gymnastics grew in popularity and more heroins were born in this sport: Cathy Rigby, Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci. Athletes pushed their ''favorite'' products on commercials. O.J. Simpson ran through many an airport to catch his Hertz rent-a-car while Joe Namath got ''creamed''. Everyone who was anyone got into tennis. Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors were the love-set and Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King were the opposite. ''Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee, whatever happened to Muhammad Ali?'' Remember...? the Muppets ... smile buttons ... Slime... Indian trouble at Wounded Knee ... The . Billy Beer... Blizzard of '78 . Watergate ... three sectional wins ... toe socks ... the posting of the 55 m.p.h. speed limit ... oil shortages ... the Patty Hearst kidnapping ... Gay Rights ... blow dryers and curling irons ... the |.S.S room... the Jonestown suicides . the right to die campaign ... Nerf Balls ... the Concord Jet ... Whitko's National FFA judging team ... The Blues Brothers ... clones . test tube babies ... The Total Woman... the Man books controversy ... ankle bracelets . pet rocks ... the day the P.O.W.'s came home ... Idi Amin ... painting the trestle at Collamer ... soft contact lenses ... boy dolls . Pat Blain in the state tennis finals ... mood rings ... double-pierced ears ... switlies ... the Bicentennial ... cowl neck sweaters ... UFO's ... the New York blackouts ... Ouija Boards ... Panama Canal ... the coal strike ... the energy crisis ... when the Whitko Community schools first became one in 1970? PEOPLE Every little boy wanted to be like the Fonz, John Travolta or the Incredible Hulk. Every little girl hoped to be as beautiful as Farrah Fawcett Majors or The Bionic Woman. Jackie Onassis was in all the gossip magazines. Ford took over the presidency, pardoned Nixon and was known for his clumsiness. Jimmy Carter won the 1976 presidential election and brought his entire family into the nation's lime-light: Billy and his antics, Miss Lillian and her humor, Ruth the evangalist and Amy, the White House brat. ''What | want to say is not Hey!!! TELEVISION The big thing in T.V. programming was the spin-off. Happy Days gave birth to Laverne and Shirley and Mork and Mindy. All in the Family produced The Jeffersons and Maude which in turn produced Good Times. Programming became more permissive with the appearances of Charlie's Angels, Three 's Company and Soap, but because of the pressure put on the broadcasters, ''orogramming inappropriate for viewing by a general family audience'' could not be aired from 7 to 9 p.m. If you didn't have time for reading, it wasn't surprising to find the best- seller that you'd heard about in the form of a ''mini-series''. For Thanksgiving, baskets of food were given to two families in the area. They also made Christmas a happier time for needy children by donating and wrapping toys which were distributed throughout both Kosciusko and Whitley Counties. As in the past, National Honor Society Induction was the club's most important event. Thirty-two new members were chosen to join the group and were inducted during the evening ceremony, where they were presented with their certificates and pins. At the end of the year members presented Mrs. Dunn with a plaque and a rosebush in appreciation of the time and hard work she has given to make National Honor Society a success. The first year of French Club was an active one. There was definately a French atmosphere at the carry-in supper held at the home of Melanie and Matt Welker. Members ate by candle light with French music softly playing in the background. Nearly 25 members attended a French music concert held at Harding High School. Whitko students along with groups from six other schools listened to the fast music of Acadia. Highlighting the year for 18 students and chaperones Miss Wendy Wildman and Bob Long was an eight day trip to France during spring | vacation. In Paris they saw famous landmarks such as Notre Dame and The Eiffel Tower. By | bus they traveled along the Loire Valley and toured several old castles. They also took a special trip to the town of Chamonix where they rode the highest cable car in the world up Mont Blanche. After a two night stay in Switzerland the group flew back to Chicago. This is where members of the Chess Club gather on meeting days to challenge each other to the strategic game of chess. Unable to at tend the regional chess competition this year, club members were content to play the game during study halls and meeting days. The Art Club was on the go with several field trips this year. Three colleges were visited: John Herron School of Art, Fort Wayne Art School and . St. Francis College. While in Ft. Wayne they went to L.S. Ayres to see the artwork of several Whitko students which was on display in the National Scholastic Arts Awards Contest. Some of the activities included Peanut Pal Week, choosing an Ideal Lady, Daddy Date Night and Chili Supper. Not only does Sunshine Society affect the friends and relatives of members, it also assists the community and special organizations. Collecting for Cancer Drive, donating toys to needy children at Christmas, raising $1563.71 for Riley Children's Hospital and entertaining at Fort Wayne State School are just a few of the ways this club helped others. At the end of the year a few outstanding members were recognized. Lori Juillerat was named Sunshine Girl of the Year at the Officer Induction.
