LARWILL “66” SERVICE Locker Rooms Every freshman and sophomore and a few juniors and seniors that took co-ed P.E. has experienced the Whiko locker rooms. They are the prep to either torture or the joy of a carefree game of ball with your friends. They are also the relaxation after these or a place for the atheletes to replay the game mentally or with their fellow team mates. These not-so-fragrant rooms are the host of many stories and also serve as a gossip center. Then the teacher calls “All out!’ and class begins. If you are lucky you ‘hurt’ yourself and down to the whirlpool you go for the rest of the period. Now that you’ve breezed through today, you have time to think how to get out of dressing or participating the next time. Concession Stands There are two concession rooms. The first one is down the ramp towards d- wing. It is open at noon times and sells different school functions. Here you can find everything from a tablet with our famed Wildcat on the front to erasers, pencils, and Bic Bananas. The second has it’s busy season during basketball, when the Seniors work selling refreshments. It is also busy when Wild- cat World is being Distributed. Other things have been sold at the concession stand in the commons also, such as tickets to shows and for raffles. Seniors used it too to pick up announcements and gowns. AUGUST 1972 — Naive freshmen, pseudo-sophisticated sophomores, know-it-all juniors, and world weary seniors pack into the building we all know and love, WHS SEPTEMBER 1972 — Tennis made its debut, Mr. Faulkner led his team to a smashing season — and then there was the day of complete chaos, when the underclassmen with slicked back hair and ruby lips had their pictures taken OCTOBER 1972 — Seniors have their turn at primping and smiling for the man with the camera too — football made a return appearance and an undefeated season — the juniors brush up on sales tactics and begin begging their friends to buy their magazines — and October closed with study hall kids being nauseated by 4 million eggs plastered on the commons windows NOVEMBER 1972 — Hoosier Hysteria blossoms once again in the hearts of every red-blooded man, woman, and child, and we all knew that this was the year that we would win the sectional — science club charters a bus to Chicago for a day of museum viewing and fun with the freaks in Old Town DECEMBER 1972 — The student body, thrilled at missing 6th period classes, gave the two-person cast of “Braodway In Sight” a round of thundereous applause — Mr. Jeffers makes his bid for fame in the world of show biz, and produces a psychedelic flick to the background music of the Iron Butterfly — and finally to relief of everyone Christmas vacation JANUARY 1973 — The ever adventuresome student body tests their nausea level by viewing the infamous ‘“‘cow’’ film prior to lunching in the cafeteria — and we can’t forget the year’s best pep rally with Karen G. frlicking around the gym imitating a Warsaw Tiger, a tricycle race, and a water feeding contest FEBRUARY 1973 — SSS girls collect their courage and ask their best guys to the Best Beau — tragedy strikes when Kevin Slater breaks his neck at the wrestling sectional — and suddenly over the weekend government takes on a new look MARCH 1973 — Tragedy strikes again, Mr. Mowery — and Mr. Blanchard die — NHS holds its annual induction ceremony — everyone gives Mr. Reed 3 rousing Chinese cheers when he takes away activity period — seniors are entertained by a dashing James Stewart and his filibuster in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” APRIL 1973 — To the dismay of some of their classmates the senior student council members were given the task of choosing the class motto, flower, colors, and song — and meanwhile out in Washington D.C. the rain kept on as any senior who went on the class trip will testify — and alas the social event of the year, girls skipped school and boys parted with their money all for one dreamy night at the prom — the big rip-off in the parking lot provoked lots of attention MAY 1973 — To keep up with the health kick the school brushes its teeth with blue goop — seniors solemnly (?) walk down the aisle for their long awaited graduation — and a few days later the school year ends with the juniors glorying in their new status as WHS seniors 33 yroryeF A, Remember... Main, No. Manchester Annual Staff The entire staff of the 1973 SPECTRUM along with the indispensable advisor, Mrs. Kaye Smith pose on the ramp above. Siggie Kaye-Smith supervises co-editors, Belinda Bryant and Denise Nestel as they toil away trying to meet their deadline. 66 With a little experience and lots of enthusiasm, the staff set out to make a record of the year that would represent each Student. Trying to make this annual more than just endless pages of mug shots, the staff added several new features: a diary of the year, action sport shots, student drawings, and layouts of the prom, cafete- ria, halls, and parking lot. Be- cause the annual is a memory book, the staff chose nostal- gia as the theme. Every little forged pass, pop quiz, P.E. day, and final exam will be part of your memories of high school. This year’s editors have worked to make the an- nual a true representation of life at Whitko. Newspaper Staff Wildcat World is the monthly stu- dent newspaper produced by students enrolled in the journalism class and other volunteers. Techniques of publication and stud- ies in journalism are practiced in the Wildcat World. Editors chosen by jour- nalism class members’ interest and ability, are in charge of assignments. Much of the production is done outside of class with discussion of students’ work and critiques done in class. The newspaper is_ self-supporting with income from both sales and with advertising by local businessmen. Editor-in-chief is Robin Porter; as- sistant, Randy Mishler; feature editor, Jule Gilbert; sports, Karen Carlin; photography, Londa Ellenwood and Gloria Luge; art, Karen Flora; business manager, Deb Trump; circulation, Julie Fry; columnist, Brett Berlin; and news assistants, Nina Carl, Lora Myers, and Deb Walters. 67 Sunshine Society The Whitko Sunshine Society was organized in October, 1972. There are 135 girls that are charter mem- bers from the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. The object of the Society is to work for a better school and community by sincere service in various ways. Each year the society gives a generous donation to the Riley Hospital Fund. Other projects include the Christian Child- ren’s Fund and Muscular Distrophy. During the year they entertain their mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and ideal ladies at teas, banquets, etc. There are district and state conven- tions and summer camps held in var- ious parts of the state and many members attend these functions. 68 This year’ the Thespians kept busy by taking charge of a school speech meet and participating in the all-school play, Labors of Love. The club was under the skillful direction of Mrs. Glist. NA e tMibt4 There were 42 members in the art club this year and the group took their first field trip to Ball State University where they visited the art department and gallery.
