FOREWORD We, the Annual Staff of the 1960 Panther, present this book to you, Orhan, hoping that as you look through it, you will remember the students, teachers, and your days at Park Rapids High School. 2 DEDICATION Music speaks one language which all people can understand and here in Park Rapids High, our band has done much to bind our hearts together in the heat of some basketball game or soothed our nerves with the rhythmic strains of an overture. Our band, under the capable direction of Don Hagen, has filled a much needed spot in our extracurricular life. In his four years at Park Rapids, Mr. Hagen has developed a splendid band which has become the pride and joy of both the school and community. Under his discerning eye and patient leadership, our band has been built up to an outstanding unit of eighty young musicians whose performances have been singled out by band critics as excel- lent and most commendable. To this outstanding teacher and director of band and choir who has so diligently worked for the progress of our music activities, we, the Annual Staff of Park Rapids High School, are proud and happy to dedicate our Panther of 1960. 3 MEMORIAM To Danny Costello, our smiling and sincere friend of days gone by, who lives in our memories though he has gone ahead into that undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction....................................1-10 Faculty........................................11-16 Senior Pages...................................17-28 Sports.........................................29-38 Activities.....................................39-50 Underclassmen..................................51-55 5 Our Sponsors 56-60 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SENIOR MEMBERS ROW 1: Ted Allen, Allen Hoppes, Dennis Jacobson, Jane Churchill, Martha Mc- Clelland. Shuckhart Clerk Without the Board of Education our public schools would have a slim chance for existence. We, Americans, proudly boast of our free education. The persons elected to this office must be dependable, trustworthy, and have an interest in the youth of today. The highest standards of education, as well as many other school functions, lie in the hands of these few people. The Board of Education deals with all problems confronting our school. We are grateful for the careful con- sideration the Board gives in arriving at each decision. 10 FACULTY ADMINIST 12 cum RATION SUPERINTENDENT w. b. McPherson The members of the Class of 1960 are to be congratulated on their completion of the first part of their education. The years that lie ahead will scatter the class. Some will go directly into homes and jobs; others will go on to business schools; to nurse's training; to colleges and to professional schools. It is our hope that each of you will have learned in your home, your community, and your school the things you will need to build a successful life; to build a life which is of value to the community in which you find your adult home; but most of all to build a life filled with the inner satisfaction of knowing that you are doing a job which is of service to your fellow men. 13 JEANNETTE BEARDSLEY Jr. High English, Social Studies, Junior Choir. Many changes have taken place in the 15 years since she graduated from high school, due to the efforts of her former classmates. The Peabody brothers, Larry and Bill, have just returned from a flight to Mars in a jet designed by Cal Pritchard, Marv Phelps, and Larry Broadbent. This is the first known trip to Mars, but many have gone to the Moon. Jerome Buckanaga is painting a close-up of it now. Helping him mix his paints are Alberta Jones, LeRoy Saarinen, Judy Benson, and Shirley Benham. Martha McClelland, while exploring the other side of the moon discovered Jim Sanford setting up the second addition to his famous Moon-Green-Cheese Plant. Tom Cheney is Mr. Sanford's chief electrical engineer and Gerald Willen- bring is the engineer responsible for the roads to the plant. On the Moon there is a tremendous school system. Among the faculty we find Nancy Peterson, Terri Gould and Mary Ann Fix teaching grade school. Ardis Fieldman teaching Phy. Ed., Keith Jump chemistry and physics. Pat Nor- man is head of the music department, the Health Department is headed by Doctors Ted Allen and Leo Zaczkowski. school nurses are LaVonne Leismeister and Darlene Eastman, Lorna Wefers, Sandra Michels, and Carol Boldt is medical technician for the school infirmary. Planes have taken the place of school buses and piloting them are Larry Avenson, Don Callen. and Chuck Becker. The religious school sessions are directed by Naidine Sanford. Larry Monico is hcaci of the Trans-Universe Air Lines, owned by the Millionaires Club. Starting the season with only 3 returning lettermen, the Panther basketball squad developed into one of the finest teams in Park Rapids history. With lettermen Keith Jump, Don Callen and Bud Grover as a nucleus, Coach Anderson added Dennis Jacobson and Bruce Ottarson to form his starting five. This quintette led their squad to 4 straight victories before bowing to a tough Staples squad in their last Pre-Christmas game. Following the holi- days the Panthers suffered a severe blow when Dennis Jacobson was lost from the squad with a prolonged illness. However, Dave Donovan stepped into his shoes and helped the Panthers win their sweetest victory of the year, beating Bemidji on their own floor. Another highlight of the year came when Keith Jump set a new individual game scoring record as he meshed 39 points at Walker. The largest crowd ever to witness a regular season game turned out for the return match with Bemidji. 1800 people jammed the PR gym as the Lumberjacks evened the score by winning a thrilling two point victory. A few weeks later, Don Callen had his best night of the year as he poured in 19 points in the first half to lead the squad to a 45-42 victory of the strong Detroit Lakes. The Climax of course came with the District 29 Tournament. The Panthers toppled Blackduck and LaPorte to enter the finals aginst their rivals Bemidji. However, the formidable Lumberjacks who haven't lost a district tourna- ment game in 8 years, once again defeated our gallant Panthers, thus ending one of the most exciting basketball years in P. Early practice started in the gym, then when the weather became satisfactory, the squad moved outside. Park Rapids won the South-Sub District Championship of District 29 and was runner up in the District 29 finals. Returning lettermen for the 1960 season are John Brieske, Bruce Ottarson, Sam Pike, Richard TeJohn, Bill Walsh, Frank Annette. The 1960 squad will be a squad which will be made up of young players, lacking ex- perience, but having much desire. TRACK ROW 1: L. Zaczkowski, R. Dicstler, D. Fineday, D. Holmer, R. Hamilton, C. The track squad had a fairly good year last year (1959). They placed 2nd in the district, 3rd in the Beaver Relays and 4th in the region. Ted Breezee and Terry Whiteberg qualified for the state meet. Ted Breezee had an outstanding year as he set records in various meets in the 100 and the 440 yard dashes. Dick Green and Dennis Jacobson also were outstanding in the district meet. Dick Smith, Mike Maas, Donald James, Orville Jensen, Bud Gro- ver, Clayton Breezee, Bill Bateman, Ted Breezee and Teiry Whiteberg made up the relay teams. 38 cn ►— v£ ro to INACTION Doug Cheney, Don Langan, Lowell Olson, Edward LaBonte, Leroy Saarinen, Roger Holmcr, Dale Sackett, Jerry Holmer, Bill Walsh, Dennis Smith, Sam Pike, Richard Bartness. Over 40 boys reported to Coach Dewey Parrish to compete for positions on the 1959-60 Wrestling squad. Of these, five were returning lettermen from last year's squad, namely Don Langan, Lowell Olson, Leroy Saarinen, Dale Sackett and Jerry Holmer. Olson, Sackett and Holmer were Region 8 champs and competed in the state tournament at Mankato. Out of this nucleus of veterans and enthusiastic new boys has developed the best balanced squad in the four years history of wrestling at Park Rapids. They have compiled a record of 7 wins and 3 losses, dropping meets only to Aitkin, Crosby and Brainerd. For the first time, they defeated their arch rivals, the Bemidji Lumberjacks, in both meets. Co-Captain, Jerry Holmer has compiled an undefeated record win- ning ten regular meets, the Grand Rapids Invitational and the Mid-State Conference. Lowell Olson compiled almost as impressive record by losing only 1 regular match and winning the Mid-State Conference title. The Panthers are rated favorites to win the Region 8 title this year. The Student Council has had its usual busy year trying to coordinate the activities of the high school so that each one has an opportunity to engage in some of the extra-curricular program events of the school. The main project is still the sponsorship of the Exchange Student programs which necessitate active partici- pation all through the school year. The magazine drive this year surpassed all previous records and went a long way to finance the council's activities throughout the year. The council also sponsored school dances and parties, the faculty-senior basketball game, the Senior Scholarship, homecoming, award day, and a Christmas program for Orhan, our Turkish student. One of the highlights of this year's council was the successful effort at the state convention in having Park Rapids nominated as the delegate-at-large to the national convention which will be held in Wisconsin next summer. Delegates to the convention in Minneapolis were Nancy McDowell, Jill Ottarson and Dennis Jacobson; they were accompanied by Mr. Jones. Park Rapids sponsored a Foreign Exchange student; this year he is Orhan Unutmaz of Bursa. Turkey. With his ever present smile and pleasing manner, Orhan has endeared himself to all of the student body. He has made a worthy representative of his country to the United States. Also for the third year we have nominated members of the Junior Class for consideration to the Summer Exchange Program. These were Karen Johnson. Kay Ellen Fletcher, and Madette Ressler. Since the language requirement for the program is becoming quite rigid, it is getting quite difficult to compete in this area of the program. Kathy Thomas, who spent last summer in , Germany, came home with many exciting stories to tell of her experiences in Europe. She has spoken to many organizations in the community about her thrilling trip. The program is underwritten by the Student Council and the Junior Class with much help being given the organizations throughout the community. The baritones' smooth voice With the steady rhythm of marching feet. All make our band so choice. There are bands of many kinds; And, of course, they are all grand, But to me the grandest one of all Is the P.R. High School Band. 44 PARK RAPIDS HIGH SCHOOL BAND Mr. Don Hagen, Director DRUMS ROW 1: Judy Edam, Ardis Fieldman, Trudee Larson, Judy Reko. Among the many highlights of the season were the bands ap- pearances in the State Legion Parade in Baudette, the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in Duluth, and appearing in a concert in St. Paul at the Min- nesota School Board Convention, which was a very high honor. The band marched at all five home football halftimes, and was present to play during the winter basketball season. This spring many members of this organization will enter the music contests, both as soloists and in ensembles. The community is proud of its band and the recognition it has received in the state. Junior Bowling is a sport that has created a lot of enthusiasm and excitement among our junior and senior high school students. We have approximately 120 boys and girls who are participating in organized league play. The senior high leagues are held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the boys and girls rotating shifts. There are six boys’and six girls' teams competing in each league. The junior high league bowls every Tuesday after school with approximately 50 young leaguers competing. The bowling season began in mid-October and will run through the month of March. There will be trophies awarded each member of the winning team and also the person or persons bowling the high single game and the high three game series.
