The class has not, in many cases, followed tradition, but has taken pride in developing new ideas. Miss Ruth Espenlaub, WHS school librarian and a graduate of Indiana University, served as senior class sponsor. In her message to the class of '56 she states, As class sponsor, it has been my privilege and responsibility to assist you in the social and extra-curricular activities in which you have engaged. When you leave WHS, I hope you will continue to chart worthwhile goals throughout your lives and work toward their attainment. My most sincere good wishes go with you, and I wish you success.” 72 Graduating as valedictorian of the class of '56 was Moltke S. Gram. Two WHS students obtained the distinction of graduating as co-salutatorians. They were Irene Kristoff and Tanya Lesinsky. The upper ten per cent of the graduating class of '56 includes Moltke Gram. Tanya Lesinsky, Irene Kristoff, Phyllis Webster. Richard Allaway. Barbara Vacendak, Richard Turner. Ted Bendis, Gordon Aird, Ronald Stephenson, and Richard Walters. — 7: SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Phil Grenchik, president; Barbara Perunko, vice-president; Lenore Sabinske, secretary; and Wayne Baran, treasurer. There have been many times dur- ing this past year when Whiting High was small in size and num- ber. But school spirit among the students was never absent. The student body rose to the occasion when there was something to be done. They cheered when they had something to cheer about. For the seniors this was an especially memorable year. Under the guidance of Miss Ruth Espenlaub, the senior class climaxed its high school days in style. Friends may be forgotten over the years but just a slight mentioning of small but pleasant happenings will bring back a flood of class time mem- ories ... such as the time when........... . . . we lost our homecoming foot- ball game to Clark. . . . Martha Payton reigned as Homecoming Queen and Barbara Perunko served as senior attend- ant. . . . the seniors and juniors en- joyed each other's company at the Jr.-Sr. party. . . . Ray Strabavy scored 40 points in the Whiting-Emerson basketball game. . . . the varsity basketball team ended an especially good season. . . . the senior boys voted for maroon caps and gowns for gradu- ation. . . . we, as a group for the last time, marched down the aisles to the strains of Pomp and Circum- stance on Wednesday, June 6, 1956. 74 SPIRIT OF GORDON AIRD Stash The Best Is Yet To Come r TATTLER. Mr. Joseph A. McAdam was asked by the WHS Reflector staff for a short statement addressing the graduating class of 1956. The following words exemplify the very spirit and nature of a man dedicated to his profession. Class of '56, you are standing on the threshold of a challenging world where material gain and physical well-being are held up as evidence of success, where primary concerns have been with the means to live rather than the ends for which we live. There is no doubt that times ahead will test your courage, faith and intelli- gence. You will require a definite sense of direction and well defined pattern of religious and moral values. We of the school will not worry if you live up to the teachinq of your par- ents, your religion, and your teachers. Following the precepts laid down by them, you cannot go wrong. God speed you and grant you success in your chosen field of endeavor. 10S BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to right: Mr. Emmett L. Riordan, Mr. Paul Dobbertin, Mrs. May T. Nyland. and Mr. Barney Lopacki. Some of the various responsibilities of the Whiting Board of Education are to pass on policies of the school, to authorize expen- ditures, to approve appointments, to approve payment of bills, and to help plan work programs for the maintenance force. The present officers are Mr. Paul Dobbertin, president: Mr. Barn- ey Lopacki, secretary; and Mrs. May T. Nyland, treasurer. Mr. William Obermiller is the school board attorney. POPPEN'S AUTO SERVICE Chicago Motor Club Road Service 106 RUDOLF'S HOUSE OF BEAUTY 1114 119th Street The power of man has grown in every sphere except over himself. These words spo- ken recently by Sir Winston Churchill allude to the greatest problem of the modem world- man's apparent inability to live and deal ami- cably with his own kind. Our fondest hope— that the world of man may acquire somehow in the not too distant future power over self. We hope that you the young people may play a worthy role in attaining that end. Your world is going to be one of challenge and change, but not to be feared. Meet it with courage and confidence. These traits you have well displayed in school life. Good luck. EMMETT L. RIORDAN Superintendent ED S PAUL'S RESTAURANT 1830 Calumet Avenue i % My best wishes to you all. GEORGE O. BURMAN Principal To you, Graduates of 1956, I extend sincerest wishes for every future success and happiness. Your progress and accomplishments will con- tinue to be of great interest to me.
