Filled with the old Christmas spirit, the girls’ club topped off the activities of the year with a pot-luck supper just before the Christmas vacation began. Everyone certainly had a wonderful time eating all the delicious food brought by the girls, and singing Christmas carols. Then those very popular “Boy Dates Girl” problems were discussed. “Oh, I only have 20-100 vision.” This was heard from a few students after they paid a visit to the nurse’s office. The juniors and seniors had the honor of having their eyes, teeth, weight, and height checked. They also received free tuberculin tests as the new system of compulsory physical education was introduced. As though these examinations weren’t enough, members of the health class had to go through the torture of being bandaged up by their classmates to demonstrate the correct methods of applying first aid. The Red Peppers held their annual reunion, at which time Dorothy Vidovich and George Harangody were crowned Pepper King and Queen . . . Basketball took the place of football with that fighting Oiler team . . . The long awaited vacation came and everyone left the school with high hopes that Santa Claus would be good to them.

“Lil’ Abners, Daisy Maes and Clems” appeared when the seniors held their “Corny Capers” dance to which everyone came dressed as hillbillies. The party was complete with barn dancing, Virginia reels, and even corn stalks as decorations, to carry out the theme. The sophomores began their activities by electing John Evanich president. The green freshies chose Bob Parker as president. 24 + 50 = 5. This caused a sensation around school, everyone wondering what it meant. It was soon revealed that this was a novel way of saying, subscribe for the Reflector on November 24th, for 50 cents, and you will get a ticket to the much talked about Reflector Dance on December 5th. Sniff, sniff. No this isn’t a blood hound, but the students going by the cooking room as the girls prepare a luncheon for the Board of Education. It seems that some of the girls know that even now the art of cooking is the way to a man’s heart.

2 + 2=4, 4 + 4 = 8, or is it 7? No I guess it’s 8. We came to this conclusion after we spent many tedious hours studying for the math exam to evade the refresher course. The lucky ones who passed the exam were exempt. This was just a beginner for the week of horrors which was to follow (otherwise known as exam week.) Even the seniors weren’t exempt from this . . . After awhile when those little yellow cards were given out, some students were happy and some even shed tears. Unus, duo, ties quattor . . . yes, I suppose you will know what this means. The Latin students will anyway, as they were busy making posters for the Latin display. The object of this display was to see how many words they could find with Latin meanings in modern advertising and books. They came to the conclusion that about fifty-six per cent of the English language is composed of Latin words directly or indirectly.
