TO THE CLASS OF 1966 Happiness is a precious thing. Nothing is more foolish than to esteem it lightly, nothing more perverse than to pour it away. Happiness cannot be commanded, and it does not come at our bidding. For as you all know, or will soon learn, in spite of all our efforts it may vanish just when it is most treasured. Misfortune, bereavement, and loss are always imminent. Happiness, then, though precious, carries the sting of transiency: it may not last. Your life here at school does not last either, and in a sense this condition has the transient qualities of happiness because you are going to leave and start again. The demands on your lives from now on will be greater, and you must brace yourselves to meet them. Therefore, should you be deprived of happiness because history happens to frustrate the goodness of life, the one thing that can keep you strong and steady is fidelity to duty. Duty, of course, is not a pleasing word to a great many in our modern world, but it must be an acceptable one. The class of 1966 will find happiness, but because we have lived closely with all of you, we should like to suggest for the ILIAD and for you a theme more lasting tha.n happiness: DUTY, -,Q
