THE TRAVELLER The sky, a leaden grey ceiling, covers the earth. The trees are stark and denudedg having given their summer foliage and fall colors to the dormant season of winter. they stand there, lifting supplicating arms to the unseeing sky. The landscape is a blend of browns and greys, with the evergreens making occasional dark splashes against the neutral background. A figure climbs the broken rail fence at the end of the pasture and stands resting beside it for a momentg then it strides across the meadow towards a grove of ancient trees near its center. As he nears the grove, the man takes off his hat as though entering a sacred place. The trees of the grove are huge old evergreens, bent and scraggly with age, yet proud and stiff, clustering around the remains of an ancient foundation, crumbling and broken, yet telling in its very size of the house which once stood there, proud and tall like the trees. By this foundation the traveller stops, leaning on his staff, weary of the past and uncertain of the future, bent with age, yet ageless. A mocking bird flutters down, cocks his head, and looks at the stranger with a beady eye, then flutters away, and all is silent. Afternoon turns to evening and evening to frosty night, but still the traveller, weary with many miles, stands contemplating the ruins at his feet. He leans on his staff, silence and the mocking bird his only company, contemplating the history of this proud, now fallen house. Finally as the moon is far overhead, shining through clear pale skies, the traveller turns to go. The mock- ing bird gives him a last piercing call, and is gone, leaving only the echoes of his blessing ringing in the ears of the traveller. But the traveller cannot stop to fathom the blessing of his fellow. He is striding across the moonlit meadow, with a determined gait and a light heartg for he has a long, long way to go. Matthew Van Dyke

THE STUDENT THAT WAS There was a student named Flo. And because she was so slow. She never gained other fame Than just being a student named Flo. Scott Vollmar SNOW The day was dark and gray and cold. The clouds had hidden the sun of gold. The night was black, without a light, But we hoped these clouds would not take When morning came we had a surpriseg The white snow glistened in our eyes. The snow was wet and soft and deep. The snow was there to let us sleep. We shoveled walks and threw snowballsg We played and threw and took our falls. Again night fell and all was clear. In all our hearts there was a fear. Tomorrow came. and with it school, Our happiness brought to a teacher's rule. Liz Green flight
