JOHN L. BARNES, A.B. Grinnell College, Oberlin College Washington University University of Hawaii History, English ALLAN COLE, A.B. , M.A. Washington University Latin DIRECTOR TO THE CLASS OF 1965 The task of writing a letter to the class of 1965 is not an easy oneg it is always difficult to say farewell to any class, for it brings back memories of the close years of association. As in your theme, Say It with Music , the melody lingers and grows with the years and often haunts one as he hears it and is reminded of the past. We must be brought up sharply, however, for it is the fu- ture in which we are interested and not the past. You go forth from here to a college, for which we have tried to prepare you, for which we hope you have prepared yourselves. Your success there must be, in a sense, a yardstick of your success in the fu- ture, in which we have played a small part. We are hopeful that you will not forget the tradition of your past and that you will carry with you the ideals and spirit of the real meaning of education: That meaning Robert M. Hutchins has expressed well: The aim of education is human excellence, both private and public. Its object is the excellence of man as an end, not as a meansg and it regards the ends of life, and not the means of it. For this reason it is the education of free men. L. ,Q ffllldf-1 Cleffc
