The rented Cessna-120 plane that Ron was flying from Janesville to Palmyra crashed on the Palmyra High School athletic field after over-shooting the runway. Anyone who knew Ron was aware that fly- ing meant more to him than anything else. He had hoped to enter the U. S. Air Force Academy near Denver after graduation. It is in tribute to Ron that we, his class- mates, set aside this page of the 1958 Aqualba. MR. P. A. PIDDINGTON Superintendent of Schools M.S. University of Wisconsin TO THE CLASS HOF 1958 It is always hard to face the re- alization, as the school year wanes, that l am going to lose a fine group of young people through graduation. The friendships that are gained through the four years that I have had the privilege ot' living in close as- sociation with these young men and women will leave memories that are never forgotten. I hope that our friendships may continue as you go your way in the world that awaits you. Come back for a visit at any- time. You can be sure that I will be thinking about you and eagerly awaiting word of the many accomp- lishments which I am sure you will make. lt is my hope that the mem- bers of the Class of 1958 will have a bright and happy future. Goodbye and good luck. George M. Buckingham ADMI I TRATIO TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1958 You are completing twelve years of education. The value of the education you have received is hard to measu1'e by monetary values. The value of what you have learned will be determined by the use you make of it in the future. Do not terminate your education with a high school di- ploma but continue to prepare yourself for the technical society in which we live today. P. A. Piddington 4'-. . J' 4: X y..- .. . 1.1.1, MR. After what appeared to be a very un- promising start Coach Crummey assisted by Coach Mead, with ten lettermen as a nucleus, built and developed the team into the defend- ing champions of our conference. With two captains, Bernie Partoll and Myron Paynter, leading us, we played a very successful season, finishing in second place, a game behind Mukwonago. This year's football season was interrupted all over the country by the flu bug. One of our games was postponed because of flu. QQ o x Ep To replace it we scheduled a game with Ripon. It was a long trip to Ripon but it proved to be a most successful one when we came home with a victory. player contributed to the team's success. The Sports Writers selected M. Kog I X BASKETBALL Coach Ken Nehring started his climb up the conference ladder with six seasoned players of last year's squad and built up a team of which we could be justly proud. Although we had no outstanding extra-tall player we did have a team with expert marksmanship. As each game passed and the season progressed, the Whippets really burned the nets. Page Thirty-Nine Senior Memories If September 4, 1954, was noted for no other unusual event it would still be a very special date since it marked the entrance into City High of a rather important group to be known henceforth as the Class of '58. There were, by official record, ninety-seven of us. Not many events can be reported for that first year since upper classmen have a way of keeping the limelight for themselves and freshmen aren't permitted to do much more than exist. However, we were allowed to elect officers and after a more or less spirited election campaign the following were declared the winners: Richard Hicks, presidentg Irene Pollock, vice-presidentg Carol Kohlmetz, sec- retaryg and Ronette Pieper, treasurer. We didn't really need advisors but since it was necessary for the other classes, we were assigned some too and very good ones they were, Miss Schuster and Mr. Puffer. Sally Fisher, John Slowey, Rodney Smith, and George Pior represented us on the Student Council. With all this high caliber leadership it is no wonder that our float for the Homecoming parade that year placed first. We began our sophomore year with a drop off of only five of our original number. With a great deal of poise and assurance we went about the bus- iness of getting our class organized. We chose Richard Hicks as class president for the second year in a row. The other officers were: Bonnie Jordan, vice-presidentg Shirley Stone, secretaryg and Madonna Kamenick, treasurer. A few weeks later we elected our Student Council representa- tives: Rodney Smith, Bill Dwinell, Ronette Pieper, and Carol Kohlmetz. Our class advisors were Miss Maerzke and Mr. Mear. The most exciting event of the year occurred in May when we had a class meeting to decide upon class rings. As we carefully looked over the samples shown us and made our choice we realized how close we were to being ,juniors and that our senior year and graduation didn't lie too far ahead. Our Junior year started with all the usual ex- citement of a' new year. We elected our class of- ficers who were: President, Bill Dwinellg vice-presi- dent, Dennis Fryeg secretary, Sally Fisherg and treasurer, Ronette Pieper. Also elected were Dave Osgood, Carol Kohlmetz, Ronette Pieper, and Rod- ney Smith as our Student Council representatives. Miss Hegge and Mr. Hanson were our faculty ad- visors for the year. Page Forty The big evcnt cf the year was, of course, the junior prom. May 10 was the date of this long' awaited dance. King Matt Messner was elected by the class to reign over the dance. He chose Lynn McKenzie as his queen. The court consisted of fourteen couples elected by the juniors. In a Chinese Temple Garden was the theme chosen and a huge gilded Buddha watched over the dancers. Dan Griebels' Band provided the soft and dreamy music until twelve when everyone headed for the Armory. Here a post prom party was provided for the danc- ers sponsored by various adult local organizations. Many other memories came back to us of our junior year. On October 1 our class rings arrived. Everyone rushed downtown to get them and proudly showed them off. In the homecoming parade we entered a huge wooden horse with the title, The Fall of Troy. Irene Pollock and Ken Schoppe were awarded the Spoon and Spade. Representatives to Badger Boys' and Girls' State were Alan Fields and Carol Kohlmetz. To earn money for the post prom party we sponsored a slave labor day for the people of the community who had odd jobs, house- cleaning chores, etc. which they wanted done. Ju- niors hired themselves out as slaves. Our last year at City High will be a year we'll never forget. At last we are really upper-classmen the Seniors of '58. To lead our class, we elected Matt Messner as piesidentg Lars Lein as vice-presi- dentg Esther Hansen as secretary, and Diane Winn as treasurer. Our Student Council members were Janet Mroz, Matt Messner, Carol Kohlmetz and Bonnie Jordan. Mr. Buckingham and Miss Schus- ter were our advisors. We undertook many projects to build up our treasury. One of these project was the senior class play, Lost Horizons . Mrs. Schubert was the dir- ector. A donkey basketball game, slave labor day, a mixer, and a carnival also helped finance our class trip to Washington, D. C. October 25 was our last Homecoming as stu- dents. Our float in the parade was Heads We Win, Tails They Lose. Our co-captains, Bernie Partoll and Myron Paynter, and their queens, Sally Fisher and Carol Kohlmetz, were the royalty for the dance. The theme was All The King's Men with music by the Collegiates. The three big events of our senior year are still to come. Class night, baccalaureate, and graduation are the most important things in our four years of high school. We all hate to say goodbye to the good times we have had here at City High.
