Ill TIIRY' I was alone enuoyung my trup to the State Faur I had bought a tucket and taken a seat on the ferrus wheel Excuuement surged through my body as the wheel started and I was carrued up-up Closung my mund to the nouse and confusuon of the faur I let my thoughts druft back over the years The ferrus wheel seemed symboluc of the wheel of Iufe My classmates and l had hardly been aware of the wheel s turnung untul at the age of sux we entered the furst grade where we began a second phase of development under the durectuon of Mrs MacElmurray Mrs McRackan and Mrs Salusbury We were lost un a world of wonder that year To us Iufe was the alphabet and learnung to wrute our names un large prunted letters Throughout the prumary grades thus wonder umpressed us as we moved constantly upward on the wheel of lufe The prumary grades were soon behund us and we entered elementary school where our chuef annual project was the assembly program In the 4th grade several members of our class competed un a poetry contest sponsored by the Junuor Woman s Club In l948 we assumed the responsubulutues of seventh graders No hugh school senuor ever felt more umportant than dud we Several members of our class took the lead un school actuvutues Tum Owens was patrol leader for the School Patrol whule Jack Greer and Mary Grey Tart were elected Mr and Muss Cutuzen by the Whutevulle Woman s Club The wheel contunued to turn and the followung year the Class of 54 entered the hugh school buuld ung as eughth graders under the supervusuon of Mrs Maggue Avant Mrs Mabel Powell and Mrs Re becca M Moore Several of our classmates who uouned the band partucupated wuth hugh school students at parades We studued North Caroluna hustory Englush and aruthmetuc un preparatuon for hugh school courses The wheel seemed to turn faster as our class entered Whutevulle Hugh School as Freshmen We were funally adjusted to the routune of changung classes and buckled down to studyung algebra and Latun Under the leadershup of our class presudent Donnue Moore we shared many happy experuences that year and many of us uouned clubs whule others partucupated un athletuc actuvutues and won places on the varsuty teams Early un the term of V952 53 we started rausung funds for specual events of the year The class was so enthusuastuc about magazune sales that we set a record not only for Whutevulle Hugh School but for the State of North Caroluna ln recognutuon of our achuevement the Curtus Publushung Company awarded the class a gold plaque Another hughlught of our Junuor year was the productuon of our class play Good Gracuous Grandma whuch was presented to a full house The clumax of all Junuor actuvutues us the Junuor Senuor Banquet Careful plannung secret prepara tuons and long hours of hard work brought the realuzatuon of the Story Book Ball at whuch we honored the Class of '53 Along wuth uoy there must be some sadness ln February one of our beloved classmates dued of a dreadful dusease Later un Aprul two other outstandung members of our class were kulled un a school accudent The wheel turned slowly then but we realuzed that sorrows were as much a part of our grow ung up as were our uoys and coveted achuevements On August 3l l953 under the supervusuon of Muss Elsue Elkuns and Muss Lous Edunger the Class of 54 began uts funal year We were proud that day and eager to fund happuness un achuevung our goals Arthur Sweum was elected Senuor Class presudent Memorues of our Senuor year flocked to my mund Sandspur meetungs the class play Cuvutan essays the school paper Hugh Tzmes the Senuor trup football basketball Suddenly I was uolted back to the present as the ferrus wheel stopped to take on another passen ger From where I sat l could look up and down Thus also seemed symboluc As graduates we can look back on memorues some of uoy some of sorrow yet at the same tume we can look up and for ward to the future as the wheel of lufe moves us unevutably to our destuned goal JOAN ASHLEY Class Hustoruan ' 'e As Sophomores, we began to take the lead in activities, we obtained our long-awaited study hallg I I v r I I

PIHIPHEUY October l2 l97O dawned clear and brnght lt promnsed to be an unusually warm day nn the bustlnng metropolns of Whntevnlle North Carolnna where a specnal fanr was benng held nn honor of Bob Whnte one of the South s most outstandnng farmers Our classmate of l954 ns as well known as the Presndent of the Unnted States Naturally all of the class consndered thns a wonderful tnme to get together and members had traveled from all four corners of the world to reach Whntevnlle As my husband and I entered town we were amazed to see a sngn whnch stated You Are Now Enternnga S Mnle Busnness Dnstrnct My how the place had grown' lmagnne our surprnse when we found that Snmmons the drug store where the gang used to gather was no longer there' ln nts place was the chann of stores famous all over the South the Owens Drug Company owned by Tnm OWGVIS He and hns cute lnttle wnfe Nancy Lyon Owens resnde at Lake Waccamaw now a beautnful suburb of Whntevnlle We dnrected our chauffeur to the school house where the fanr was to be held On the way we passed the follownng busnnesses Buffknns an exclusnve men s shop owned by Douglas Buffknn where nt ns sand one may purchase snlk tnes for as much as fnfty dollars Collners the shop that put Tnffanys out of busnness owned by Bnlly Collner who employs Ray Bass a world famous watchmaker Mnladys Beauty Salon whose nonnt owners Eula Mae Horne and Lucnlle Stevens manufacture cosmetncs whnch outsell any others on the market McQueen Busnness School staffed by Presndent Faye McQueen and nnstruc tors Mary Grey Tart Mary Glen Culpepper and Denznl Prndgen Soon we arrnved at the magnnfncent campus of Whntevnlle Hngh School The bunldnng ultra modern and covernng several acres had been desngned by the same team of archntects commnssnoned to desngn the new Lnbrary of Congress Bunldnng Cecnl Merrntt a sought after bachelor and Henry Melvnlle who lnves nn San Francnsco wnth hns wnfe Joanne Inman Donnne Moore the Supernntendent of Whntevnlle Cnty Schools and Rudy Horton the football and baseball coach were among the fnrst to greet us Many colleges and professzonal teams have trned to hnre Rudy but he prefers to remann nn Whntevnlle The fnrst two people l saw on enternng the gym were Carole Soles an nnstructor at Carolnna School of Pharmacy and Chrnstnne Wooten who had abandoned a shnnnng career nn pednatrncs to become the wnfe of Bob Hngh edntor and publnsher of the Chzcago Trzbune They cornered me and began brnefnng me on my former classmates many of whom had already arrnved for the fanr ln rapnd successnon they gave the news Make Gore and Thomas Fnsher test nets to see how fast they wnll go James Canterbury ns a professor of engnneernng at State College and also has devnsed many new machnnes for engnneernng problems Dnanne Davs and Marnorne Canterbury are artnsts lnvnng nn Greenwnch Vnllage Ruby Hnlburn and Julna Stanley are nurses at the Mayo Clnnnc Connne Hussey ns a laboratory technncnan at Columbus County Hospntal Charles Collum owns a funeral home here nn Whntevnlle Grant Whnte ns the conductor of the U S Marnne Band Wrllard Ward basketball coach at N C State boasts a team that has been unbeaten for four stranght years Paul Wnllnamson and Kenneth Worthnngton are busnness partners controllnng the Bunck Pontnac Dodge Plymouth and Packard Cadnllac agencnes Thelma Brown Gayle Collner Margaret Dew Wnlma Ezzell Dorns Cartrette and Margaret Hyatt all housewnves belong to the same sewnng cnrcle lt ns sand that they know the gossnp before nt happens' Shnrley Brnght has establnshed a home nn nearby Clarkton and Maxnne Brown ns lnvnng nn Laurnnburg Jane Jordan ns a mathematncs nnstructor at Carolnna and Frances Smnth Dean of Women at Merednth Col lege Margaret Tuton teaches home economncs at Eastern Carolnna Teachers College Nancy Hnnson Maxne Pope Dorns Smnth and Phylnsta Spnvey are all very actnve nn the PT A They have a combnned total of twenty chnldren Ganl Parker a popular anrlnne hostess and Betty Tedder a famous Conover Model are often publncnzed nn the socnety and gossnp columns Anne Lewns nnhernted a fortune from a rnch snxth cousnn nn the Ornent and ns a popular socnalnte v n - n n , , . . , , n - V 4 r , . . , . n n ' . , n r Q n ' 1 n 1 , . , . . . , , .
