Ill TIIRY' I was alone enuoyung my trup to the State Faur I had bought a tucket and taken a seat on the ferrus wheel Excuuement surged through my body as the wheel started and I was carrued up-up Closung my mund to the nouse and confusuon of the faur I let my thoughts druft back over the years The ferrus wheel seemed symboluc of the wheel of Iufe My classmates and l had hardly been aware of the wheel s turnung untul at the age of sux we entered the furst grade where we began a second phase of development under the durectuon of Mrs MacElmurray Mrs McRackan and Mrs Salusbury We were lost un a world of wonder that year To us Iufe was the alphabet and learnung to wrute our names un large prunted letters Throughout the prumary grades thus wonder umpressed us as we moved constantly upward on the wheel of lufe The prumary grades were soon behund us and we entered elementary school where our chuef annual project was the assembly program In the 4th grade several members of our class competed un a poetry contest sponsored by the Junuor Woman s Club In l948 we assumed the responsubulutues of seventh graders No hugh school senuor ever felt more umportant than dud we Several members of our class took the lead un school actuvutues Tum Owens was patrol leader for the School Patrol whule Jack Greer and Mary Grey Tart were elected Mr and Muss Cutuzen by the Whutevulle Woman s Club The wheel contunued to turn and the followung year the Class of 54 entered the hugh school buuld ung as eughth graders under the supervusuon of Mrs Maggue Avant Mrs Mabel Powell and Mrs Re becca M Moore Several of our classmates who uouned the band partucupated wuth hugh school students at parades We studued North Caroluna hustory Englush and aruthmetuc un preparatuon for hugh school courses The wheel seemed to turn faster as our class entered Whutevulle Hugh School as Freshmen We were funally adjusted to the routune of changung classes and buckled down to studyung algebra and Latun Under the leadershup of our class presudent Donnue Moore we shared many happy experuences that year and many of us uouned clubs whule others partucupated un athletuc actuvutues and won places on the varsuty teams Early un the term of V952 53 we started rausung funds for specual events of the year The class was so enthusuastuc about magazune sales that we set a record not only for Whutevulle Hugh School but for the State of North Caroluna ln recognutuon of our achuevement the Curtus Publushung Company awarded the class a gold plaque Another hughlught of our Junuor year was the productuon of our class play Good Gracuous Grandma whuch was presented to a full house The clumax of all Junuor actuvutues us the Junuor Senuor Banquet Careful plannung secret prepara tuons and long hours of hard work brought the realuzatuon of the Story Book Ball at whuch we honored the Class of '53 Along wuth uoy there must be some sadness ln February one of our beloved classmates dued of a dreadful dusease Later un Aprul two other outstandung members of our class were kulled un a school accudent The wheel turned slowly then but we realuzed that sorrows were as much a part of our grow ung up as were our uoys and coveted achuevements On August 3l l953 under the supervusuon of Muss Elsue Elkuns and Muss Lous Edunger the Class of 54 began uts funal year We were proud that day and eager to fund happuness un achuevung our goals Arthur Sweum was elected Senuor Class presudent Memorues of our Senuor year flocked to my mund Sandspur meetungs the class play Cuvutan essays the school paper Hugh Tzmes the Senuor trup football basketball Suddenly I was uolted back to the present as the ferrus wheel stopped to take on another passen ger From where I sat l could look up and down Thus also seemed symboluc As graduates we can look back on memorues some of uoy some of sorrow yet at the same tume we can look up and for ward to the future as the wheel of lufe moves us unevutably to our destuned goal JOAN ASHLEY Class Hustoruan ' 'e As Sophomores, we began to take the lead in activities, we obtained our long-awaited study hallg I I v r I I
