The author claims no authenticity in the following prophecyg offering it only as a figment of his imagination acquired while trying to conjure a vision of the future. At first I saw only clouds and sky ----- endless space. Then the vision cleared as does water after a pebble is dropped, and I noted a large crowd of people, -------- and of all things ------- an archangel. lt was then that I realized where we were. We were approaching the Gates of Heaven. The archangel turned to the crowd advancing the Golden Gates, Why, good people, have you all came at once? Deales Evans, noted debator, stepped forward through the pillow like foam of the cloud and spoke for the group. We are the class of 1949 from Whitesville High School, he replied. We were holding our 50th class reunion. Opal Jones and Delores Hendrickson prepared a lunch for us, and we all came right up. Here is our class roll. Yes, indeed there are some famous names here, said the archangel. Yet, often the first shall be last and the last first. Each of you must tell what you have done to gain entrance to heaven. You ---- uh ---- Deales Evans, what have you done? I? Why I've argued against a certain political party for over 60 years. Pass in. And what have you done, Billy Howard? I was agricultural representative in Washington from Kentucky. But we don't allow agricultural experts any moreg they criticize the conditions here. However, if you promise not to cause any trouble, you may enter. What was your greatest achievement, Eugene Embry? I don't remember. Oh yes, I raised a mustache. I wrote a book of recipes, cut in Opal Jones. Shall I read one to you? No, no, replied the archangel hastily. Go on in. What have you done to deserve heaven, Bobby Greer? 1 started on a shoestring and built a billion dollar industry in Kentucky. Pass on. What have you done to be deserving, Billy Probus? Why J. D. Ewan and 1 did excellent work in school, and yet were contented with whatever grades they chose to give us. Pass in, said the archangel, though he looked rather dubiously at J. D. Jonnine Mattox, called the archangel scratching his head. Z0 Oh yes, I know you. Sometimes when the earth was about 5 billion miles away. I've heard you yelling for some fellow by the name of Bob. But, protested Professor Delores Hendrickson, the earth never comes closer than 5,016,783,102 miles, to be exact. To be sure, smiled the archangel. What about you, Marilyn Miller? I became president of a college, and l made Theresa Hicks Economics Head, and Jean Patton Physical Director. Pass in. Charlotte Norris, what have you done? I've endured Louis Jones's temperamental ways for 4? years. He's president of the Farmers' Union you know. Then you have earned your reward, said the archangel. Nora Ellen Greer, called the archangel. I became the first woman vice-president of the United States. QVice-presidents should be seen and not heardl. Bobby Kelley was made Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Juanita Huff was made Postmaster General, as she was experienced in handling the M-A-L-E-S Kmailj. Pass on, said the archangel. Donald Catron, he called. But there was no response. Frank Moseley and Don slipped in while no one was looking, yelled Arthur Bartley, champion world wrestler. Oh, dear, groaned the archangel, That's the third time this month. Wasn't there another member of this remarkable class, -- ---yes, yes, a Margaret Haynes. Oh, yes, came the reply from the group. She's supervising our burial next week. Being a Professor of Toxicology, fexpert on poisons, she saved herself you know. Robert Jackson Z1 1949 SENIOR CLASS POEM By Delores Hendrickson The Senior Class of '49 Reminisces time after time. We remember those days at W. H. S., Always knowing our teachers knew best. There we learned our P's and Q's The three R's and who was who. I'll name them off and go down the line To the reminder of olden times. Billy Howard with head thrown high, Curly black hair, and dark, dark eyesg Louis whom everyone knew By the wad of gum he always chewed, Charlotte Norris, who was his running mate, If Louis wasn't there, Charlotte was late, Jean, her glasses painted in style, And Margaret with her winning smile. Now in every class must be An artist with talent from the family tree, The one who had this gift displayed Was Marilyn Miller, our artistic maid. Jonnine, who was as small as an elf, Was the very image of herself, Nora Ellen with her flashing white teeth, Opal whom all the boys were crazy to meet. They say the tall are worldly and wise, So J. D. was our wonderful guy. Now who is the little one, so frail and small? Why that's Bobby Jackson, the mightiest of all. And the one with the curly blonde hair, you ask Bobby Joe Greer, alack and alas! Oh.such a beauty and boy what class Juanita Huff, the black-haired lass. He'1l give her rings and treasures of pearls, From Donnie to Michele, his very best girl. S-H-H! Sh! Quiet! Kel1ey's in there. The brains are at work: don't venture near. Oh gosh, oh gee, what a bashful guy! When the girls gaze at Frank, they utter a sigh. Here are your reducing pills, now be sure To take them, Deales, to be as you were. She flashed her rings, hither and yon, Theresa got hitched when December came on. Hercules, the man with muscles abound, But we don't need him when Arthur's around. Billy Keith here, Billy Keith there, Johnny on the spot, but girls beware! Come on, Embry, make that pass, Your fame is here, so make it last. Now who is she, just inquire within. That's Delores, the gal with the grin. Gee what a figure at that age. Ah, Mrs. Bowman, what grace. ZZ But seriously tho, they're all great guys The school, the teachers for them we have strived To attain the utmost. In what life may hold, Our joys, our happiness, our dreams untold, To them we give our thanks, tho small. All through the years we'll remember them all, The great, the grand, the big and small. But dear to our hearts W. H. S. The school we love, the grandest -- the best. 1949 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY By Nora Ellen Greer In the year of '45 twenty-four green freshmen entered high school with high hopes for the future, with Miss Wilcox as their sponsor. However we were not able to keep this number long. In our sophomore year, with Miss Strong as our sponsor, we lost Marilyn Westerfield, Mildred Sharp, Delores Hendrickson and Lewis Hamilton, leaving twenty sophomores to struggle for the high honor of senior-ty. But losing these four did not dampen our spirits for the next year. We floated around in a cloud of dreams for the remainder of the year. Imagine we were going to be upper classrnen! 3 ! The juniors of '47 gained four new members to their class, respectively, Norma Keown, Mildred Sharp, Delores Hendrickson, Marilyn Miller and William Ratliff, this making a total of twenty-three with Mrs. Bowman as our sponsor. At last we attained our goal. Seniors, and how proud we were of this title! Even so we could not keep this total record long. We lost Mildred Sharp, Norma Keown and William Ratliff, but gained .Tonnine Mattox from Fordsville. Now we had a-class for any sponsor to be proud of -- twenty-two bright-eyed seniors, experienced in the life of school. We had struggled hard these long four years, and coming out on top, we were happy of this achievement. Mrs. Bowman may not have been so happy or proud to be our sponsor as we were to have her but, I know that all the seniors will agree that Mrs. Bowman has been the best ever. All through the years we will remember the courage, as well as the encouragement she gave to boost us upward. 23 LC! 94,3 SENIOR ACTIVITIES The biggest, big events in our Senior year.began with the day our class rings came. September 24 we all tried them on, and much to our surprise -- it's unusual they say -- the rings fit! September Z8 we all went to town in the rain to get ads for the annual. We had lunch at .Tay's. Everyone was happy but dripping. It all went on the expense account. We went to Owensboro to get senior pictures made and while in town we walked down to the river to see the LCI that was docked there for Navy week. There were sailors on the boat. November 6 was the class rurnmage sale. It was a lot of fun though it wasn't what we had expected. It seems other people aren't as interested in our going to Washington as we. November 15 was the potluck community supper, thanking the county board for the new gym. It was dedicated November 9 and the first game was played that night. The Senior-sponsored Fall Festival was November 24. Even though our Opal Jones was not elected queen, we weren't too disappointed because the Festival certainly paid off. The senior candidate for king, .T. D. Ewan, was elected however. Thursday, December Z3, the class went to Mrs. Bowma.n's for a party. We con- sumed a huge supper including fried chicken, oysters and three kinds of cake. We had three special guests who seemed to enjoy being seniors again. After opening the gifts, we went caroling in the neighborhood. There was plenty of mistletoe but it seemed to have lost its charm -- for almost everyone. The Monday following Christmas vacation we set the date for our production of The Adorable Imp. From then until January 21 all the cast could think of nothing but play -- play and more play. And we don't mean ping-pong. We sometimes wished it had been. Everyone was glad to see January 13 and 14 gone. No one likes semester tests -- not even Seniors. The class ran the concessions during the Invitational Tournament. The Senior whiz, Breeches Embry, was selected on the all-tournament team. Trying to get the annual out by the deadline had us all in a dither for the final week. We plan to take our Senior trip to Washington D. C. It will probably be a week the mid-part of April. We all look forward with -- uh - regret -- to graduation from Whitesville High School. Marilyn Miller 25 SMILE EMBRY SMILE A as 'WVR ff 5 LAZINESS HUBA-HUBA GIRL 1 SCHC RING HAPPY BIG BOY EMBARRASSING MOMENT LONE RANGER AM AZ ON SCI-ICRSL GANG A - AMBITIOUS 1 26 Dear Classmates, I offer no apologies for the state of mind which I am in and have gradually been driven to ever since I began my high school career. But I do want to apologize to you, classmates, for not helping to hold up the standard of the class. I could have been an A student too if I had flattered the teachers and bought them off as you no doubt have done. But I entered school with the idea that study and only study would get you grades, and that is what I've done. You think I'm a grumbler--well just who wouldn't grumble? This school -- the lunch room -- these teachers -- the disrespect shown the seniors. The county board waited until I was out of school before they built us a gym. No doubt coaches from many colleges would have been flocking here to get me to play on their team if I had had a decent floor to practice on. As for the lunch room, a special dining room should be provided for the seniors. In this school we have to stand in line with underclassmen and at times we have to sit at a table with freshmen. Our food is Grurnb1ers' Food, soup -- soup, soup! And this faculty -- we can't live by the Ten Commandments. We have to have the demerit system. Every ball game Mr. Miller calls time out and gives me a bawling out for breaking training but why should I quit smoking when 5 out of 6 doctors use my brand of cigarettes. And Mrs. Bowman -- it's read this -- memorize this -- . Why should I read about Shakespeare? l'm modern. I prefer comics and besides educators say we learn more from pictures anyway. Miss Kenner -- new here and as young as any of us, seemed insulted when boys asked her to go out with us. When we do get a new teacher, he has to be a man. When I become superintendent I'11 not hire anyone except young blondes. Miss Settle says four years of English and three years of math are required for graduation. Why can't we substitute campusology. The class meets regularly every day and if school is to prepare you for life, what course would do this better. I have said part of my piece, time and space will not allow me to go further, but I hope that everyone going from Whitesville High School will not be driven to the state of mind I am. JUNf5K omcmis 'Pfeiuleu ' 5223-H.fl? JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY Under the guidance of Kenneth Harrison, 26 brave, stout-hearted Freshmen started the long awaited first year of high school. High school meant we were in things now, and not just kids. We lost three of our number that year. Mary Lois Clayton moved to Owensboro, lra King moved to Utica and Rogel Hamilton quit school. Then as ii we would never get through losing people, we lost our sponsor, Mr. Harrison, who packed up and left us to go to Chicago. Jane Onstott was crowned queen of basketball which was a great honor for us. The next year, 1947, we lost three more pupils, Mabeth Lashbrook got married Joan Harrison moved to Owensboro and Paul Sowders quit school. Something good always happens. We gained three to make up for those lost, Benny Shadwick, Bill Moser and Bob Moser. This year, the year before our last, is one full of hard work and fun -- meaning the Junior Play and the Junior-Senior Banquet. What a time we have with our sponsors! We've lost Mr. Blackburn now. Our new sponsor is Mr. Sorrel. Now the class has ZZ members -- all of whom we hope graduate next year, the big year we're all looking forward to. 35 E S . i I B111 Civ- Ann Cambrm Fences 041-div' Slum Bob Mvwr 2 of' 'LVV . , if U WA , I fn-Ja. xeneg san Moser' N J.momfo1r efm4L.w-fq I l t ., ,, Engfthvdenm Bill-3 Pu-Ikyaih 'A Opal Mer ri'H Nina Carmen H115 K,G1lmno Benng SIWHICK Aram' Hicks Gert-uJf,G'2lb-1 E I was K V X . ,,,. 1 sf ,S wa' gig ff x l J ML Kirk 51 5.5 Sue Neel Rex in H FLem5puvricf Gifald Rv-rf Nifvgufvf ' 1-:diff ' qv-' a .QF '-4.-' wf If NN w .Q A 5 una.
