Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1983 volume:

THE CLASS OF 1983 PRESENTS MAGIC MOMENTS MAGIC MEMORIES OF DAYS GONE BY, OF HAPPY HELLOS AND SAD GOODBYES, OF TIMES WE'VE LAUGHED AND TIMES WE'VE CRIED, MEMORIES OF HIGH SCHOOL DAYS AND DAYS TO COME, MEMORIES OF THINGS WE'VE SAID AND THINGS WE'VE DONE. MAGIC MOMENTS ARE ALL OF THESE, MEMORIES AS HIGH AS MOUNTAINS AND AS DEEP AS THE SEA, MEMORIES OF YOU AND ME AND THE FRIENDS AND PEOPLE WE'VE KNOWN, MAGIC MOMENTS WE WILL ALL KEEP FOR OUR OWN. 1983 WYCENIAN WHITESVILLE CENTRAL SCHOOL WHITESVILLE, NEW YORK IN MEMORIAM The summer of 1982 saw a tragic accident at work take the life of Rick Pensyl. His death stunned this community and saddened everyone who knew him. Rick was a good friend whose rugged good looks, warm smile, sense of humor and quiet self confidence made him so well liked by his classmates, teachers and all who knew him. He was an outstanding athlete at W.C.S. His natural ability and capacity for hard work made him a standout on three varsity basketball teams which had a combined 52-11 record with him as a starting guard. Rick was a fierce competitor and consistent winner in soccer and baseball as well. No mat- ter what sport it was, he always gave 100%. Rick was the kind of person who would go out of his way to help a friend with a problem or say something to pick you up when you were feeling low. He took particular interest in young people, often helping them through hard times by just talking to them. His family and the Board of Education have initiated an annual award to be named, “The Rickie Pensyl Memorial Student Athlete Award , which will be awarded for the first time in 1983. The recipient will be privileged to be identified as having some of the abilities and qualities which were so abundant in Rick Pensyl. Rick was a person who will never be forgotten and will always be admired by all who came in contact with him. He helped make anyone he knew a better person. DEDICATION We, the Class of 1983, dedicate our yearbook, the Wycenian, to the people of the community of Whitesville. In special recognition, we thank our parents for their caring, patience and devotion. They have always been there to listen to our problems and to encourage us to go on. Above all, their loving support has guided us and given us the values on which we will pattern our lives. We extend our deep thanks to the business community which has so generously supported our fund-raising events. Without their generosity the success of our projects would not have been possible. We also wish to recognize our teachers. They have helped us learn how to be individuals, shown us how to make the best of what each of us has and demonstrated that responsibility is a necessity. Appreciation is due also to the many friends, neighbors, sports fans and firemen and ambulance corps volunteers who have given freely of their time, skill and funds to our school and our community. The people of Whitesville are special. We value them and we thank them. Mother and daughter??? Mrs. Seely, who has been our advisor for the past five years, has been a great in- spiration for our class. Through her organization and imagination we have had many successful fund raising events. These successes have enabled us to earn enough money to go to New York City on our Senior Trip in May. Mrs. Seely has seen us through thick and thin, through pleasant and unpleasant times, but above all she has given us her support and has believed in our ways. No matter how high strung our emotions became, she smoothed things out for us and made the impossible seem possible. For that we thank her. Although Mrs. Fox has been with us for only two years, her presence has been greatly felt. She has always been willing to lend a helping hand. She has done a variety of things that range from picking up doughnuts for a bake sale to organizing our Christmas Kit sales. She has enthusiastically led the color guard this year and helped the cheerleaders prepare for the Pom-Pom competition. The Senior Class feels that the most outstanding trait of her personality is her willingness to support us and others in a time of need. Thank you, Mrs. Seely and Mrs. Fox. Your time and effort will always be fondly remembered. ALL STARS: Kevin Calcote, George Rear, Chip Stanford, Rich Folts. The 1982 Blue Jay soccer team compiled a 10-8 record. After winning the South Division, we lost an excellent game 2-1 to the eventual sectional champion, Belfast. In sectional play, we advanced to the quarterfinals by defeat- ing Jasper 4-2, then lost to Greenwood, 1-0. Hustle was the mark of Whitesville this year, as everyone gave 100%. Their achievements this season far surpassed most expectations. 46 The girls soccer team went 6-6-1 this season, which is one of the best records we've had in Whitesville girls soc- cer. The team was ranked fifth in the country and tenth in Section C standings. Whitesville played Belfast in the first round and lost 2-3. The team is losing eight seniors who will surely be missed but the lady Blue jays are looking forward to another successful season. Row 3: Patricia Cooney, Erin Hogle. The girls' volleyball team turned in a fine season with a 7-6 record and advanced into sectional play. The girls used the four-spiker and two-setter offense with an aggressive, hustling defense. The talents of seniors Beth Erdmann, Kathy Heisey, Margeurite Meunier, and Nancy Tidd will be sorely missed, but a fine nucleus remains which should make next year an even better season for the Blue Jay Spikers. 48 Row 1: Cindy Harrison, Michele Birmingham, Ginger Grover. Row 2: Mary Dawn Lewis, Wendy Stebbins, Judy Jackson, Betsy Spicer. Row 3: Helen Ellison (captain), Wendy Burdick, Hope Jackson (captain). Row 4: Karen Ellison (captain). CHEERLEADERS Highlights of the 1982-1983 cheer- leading season included the following. Helen. Karen and Hope were selected as co-captains. The girls chose Michele Birmingham, a first grader, to be their mascot. Money was raised for new pom- poms, which nicely added to the squad's appearance. The squad performed their Pom-Pom Routine to Turn Me Loose at the Scio Pom-Pom Competition in February. Overall, the season was a very successful one. 49 Row 1: Jeff Erdmann (manager), Mr. Amphlett, Tom Spicer (manager). Row 2: Jim Sutley, George Kear (captain), Kevin Caicote (captain), Larry Easton, Tom Coyle, Paul Talbett, Lee Merwin, Eddie Olds, Chip Stanford, Rich Folts. VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1982-1983 varsity basketball team ended its season with a 7-12 record. The season wras highlighted by two victories over a tough Angel- ica team. The varsity players distinguished themselves by their aggressive style of play and their tremendous sportsmanship. Seniors Kevin Caicote, George Kear, Paul Talbett, Lee Merwin and Chip Stanford will be greatly missed. 50 The junior varsity Blue Jays enjoyed a most successful 13-5 season. Most notable among their accomplishments was the fact that no one team defeated them more than once. Another impor- tant achievement was that this record was compiled playing man to man defense exclusively—a fact that will aid them greatly as varsity players. The boys really improved and seemed to be coming together at the close of the season, ending the season with a five game winning streak. J.V. The highlight of our season was a come-from-behind overtime victory at Belfast with a final score of 31-29. Although playing most of the season with only seven players, the Bluejays were never below third place in a nine- team league. 54 Row 1: Erin Hogle, Nancy Tidd, Jen Loughlin (manager) Jackie Houghtaling, Lisa Starks. Senior participants were Janine Greene, Jackie Houghtaling and Lisa Starks. BASEBALL The 1982 varsity baseball team at W.C.S. com- piled a 7-5 record before bowing to Belmont in the Class D sectionals. The season was highlighted by an 11-5 win over Scio. The Bluejays also de- feated Jasper twice and Jasper went on to win the Class D sectional crown. George Kear pitched a no-hit game against Belfast. Steve Allen led the team in batting at .565 and Don Van Etten made the County All-Star team with an average of .400. Graduated seniors who will be missed include Rich Grover, Glenn Brubaker, Dennis Connolly, Steve Allen and Don Van Etten. 55 Attentive NHS member I didn't know a yearbook was this much work! In the beginning we were little and shy Looking back, I often wonder why. From way back then 'til now We've been through so much, but how? We've grown up together, through good times and bad. To think we'll soon be leaving kind of makes you sad. Yes, we've come a long way. Just think, on graduation day We'll be leaving it all behind. Not really, this school will always be somewhere in the back of our minds. We've learned a lot, yet have so much more to learn. We've accomplished so much, but have still more trophies to earn. W.C.S., as we step ahead and put you in our past. The world in front of us looks mighty vast. We'll always have teachers, tests and more than one rule. Just no more Whitesville Central School. But when we stop and reflect. We have all those magic memories we worked so hard to collect. We express our thanks to everyone who cared. Thanks for all those magic moments we've shared.
