DEDICATION Mrs. Sara Squier has been dedicated to Whitesville and its surrounding area for many years. Although she participates in the activities around Ulysses and Greenwood, she is recognized for being an ever-present, enthusiastic sport” at Whitesville as well. We often spot her cheering wholeheartedly from the stands during a basketball game, tooting her trombone enthusiastically in the band, or sitting in her office patiently wiping tears from an upset student's face in her usually consoling manner. We remember Mrs. Squier as the talented music teacher way back when , but we will recall more often her years as a guidance counselor. Her guidance ranged from assisting us in making necessary and helpful choices with our schedules to settling our fights with our best friends. Whatever the problem, she devoted all her time and attention talking the matter out with us until we were satisfied in seeing our individual needs met. No problem was too small or seemed unimportant to her. Whether dealing with a routine task or finding herself in the middle of a student's crisis , Mrs. Squier has always managed to remain calm and dealt with the situation with humor and, if necessary, a friendly rebuke. We have found that this physically small person is a real ,dynamo who can get immediate and sat- isfactory results from the most stubborn or elusive college official. Her guidance has extended itself to us in many less tangible but more important ways. By listening to our views and understanding our feelings, she has instilled confidence within us and helped us grow as individ- uals by encouraging us to consider the viewpoints of others. Mrs. Squier is what we consider a well-rounded person: unselfish, truthful, impartial, fun and caring. Her availability and her friendly vitality are an important memory of Whitesville Central that we'll always carry with us. With great appreciation and affection, the Class of 2981 dedicates this yearbook to Mrs. Sara Squier. 2 « SENIORS V 'i-' ■4 . 4 KENNETH E. BRUBAKER STEWART W. EDWARDS 6 MICHAEL J. FOTH 7 . TAPLEY We would like to thank our advisors Miss Louise Rogers and Mr. Douglas VanSkiver for their dedication, hard work, and patience with us during our last year at Whitesville Central. During our magazine sales they helped us to earn $3,100, far surpassing our goal of $2000. Miss Rogers patience and Mr. VanSkiver's ever- ready joke turned our lucra- tive candy bar sales into an enjoyable event. Due to our advisors' prompting our sales made our senior trip to Washington, D.C. become a reality. You have to kiss alot of frons before you find your nrince! I would say to anyone who is concerned about the American school system: the results of the American school system seem to bear out that we haven't done so badly with ourselves as well as with our young people, address by William Keough, former hostage, at a West Point Press Conference. To you, the graduating class of 1981, be proud of the education you have received and be proud to be an American, always remembering American ends in the words, I can. Good luck and best wishes always. David E. BOARD OF EDUCATION Graduation approaches, and with this accomplishment conies a bitter-sweet feeling; a paradoxical emotion com- bining nostalgia for the irrevocable past and anticipation for the future. Soon ends the familiar routine of high school and a new phase of your life begins. But whatever the future may be, your past at the VJhitesville Central School will have a definite influence upon your lives. I have had the pleasure of watching the class of 1981 grow from tiny second graders to mature young adults, ready to set out into the world. You have had the oppor- tunity to get an excellent education here at Whitesville. If you have taken advantage of this opportunity, you are sure to have great success in the world that awaits you. SOCCER CONGRA TULATIONS BLUE] AYS! Bill Ellison, MVP Section V Championship Game Congratulations are due to this year's boys soccer team for an out- standing season. They won the Allegany County Class C championship and then advanced to the Section V Class C section- al game where they became co-champions with Andover Central. This is the first sectional title Whitesville has ever won in a major sport. Coach Sheldon Atherton's team did the job very impressively, end- ing the season with a 14-1-2 record. Belfast was the only team to defeat them but this loss was avenged'' when the Bluejays came back and beat Belfast in the Allegany County Championship game and then won again with a 2-1 score in the semi-finals. Another highlight of the season was the Whitesville victory over Fillmore, the team which ended their own season as winners of the Class B Allegany County Championship. Bluejay fans are understandably very proud of this team and their coach. The players were very proficient in the sport's skills, they worked hard and displayed a great attitude. During games they were always tough, aggressive and determined to win but they were always sportsmanlike and conducted themselves as gentlemen. Coach Atherton deserves a great deal of credit for forming a team of this caliber. His philosophy of always giving over 100% and playing every game as if it were a championship match gave the team the attitude they needed to win. He has the following to say about his team, This was one of the finest group of gentlemen that 1 have ever coached; they worked very hard in practice and it paid off. We probably had more talent depthwise than any team in the area. I was proud to be associated with such a distinguished group of young men. ’ sJ Again we extend our congratulations and appreciation to Coach Atherton and his outstanding team!
