Many people of today are wondering if there is any such thing as peace left in this world. All of us want peace and a lot of us are fighting for it. There seems to be more war on this earth than peace. We are faced with the war in Viet Nam as well as with the problems at home. We are fighting the war against poverty and the war against negro discrimination. These might not appear to be as serious as the war in Viet Nam but will we ever find peace in them? Some people don’t face these problems but if you’re poor or black YOU DO. Kids today are working for a higher education but are faced with a so-called war of their own. Riots and drugs face kids of today. Will there ever be peace in this? Peace is something that we all want but very few are working for. This is one of the many things which cannot be obtained over night. Many young people are being brought up in this world today, not know- ing what peace is. The reason for this is because of the many wars they are faced with. Although they didn’t start these wars, they will still have to participate in them. They may not even know why they are fighting, but still they are working for that one thing-PEACE. So we would like to dedicate our 1971 Wycenian to peace and hope that some day we will find exac y what it is. Whether it is in the mind or in the world. We hope that soon all our dreams about PEACE will come true. by Debby Jones Our Thanks to MAPES INDUSTRY, INC. 5 1st Row: Ann Derhammer, Anne Merrick, Judy Hall, Jackie Cramer, Sherry Richmond, Jessie Barrett, Janice Vallieres, Mar- cia Crittenden, Charlene Bledsoe, April Folts. 2nd Row: Marty Payne, Waltor Swort, Frank Chase, Stan Good, Dave Lathrop, Terry Rear, Dan Mack, Charlie Stambaugh. Eileen Flanagan Pat Birmingham Girls and Boys' State GIRLS' STATE I, Eileen Flanagan, attended the 1970 session of Girls’ State with four other girls from Allegany County. It was held the last week in June at Albany State College. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and left for home Satur- day morning by bus. Girls’ State attempts to develop understanding of govern- mental operations on local, state, and federal levels. We also learned a lot more about government by electing party offi- cials and working to get them in office. BOYS’ STATE On June 22,1, Patrick Birmingham, boarded a bus in Wellsville with other boys from the county who were attend- ding Boys’ State in Morrisville. 1 was chosen by the Robert James Post of Whitesville. Some of the activities at Boys’ State were Basketball, Tennis, and Track. We never had a dull moment. Sports were not the only thing at Boy’s State. You spent most of your time in your own party electing officers for government offices. After you had elected your officers you had a big party rally. The voting machines were donated by Morrisville who had recently bought new machines. Boys’ State is a good experience for young people be- cause they learn how the government is run and how to get along with other people. 24 Our Thanks To RICE MUSIC HOUSE KORNY KORNERS FIRST AND LAST TO MARRY Ann and Denny HAPPY GO LUCKY Sue and Pat 25 CLASS CLOWN Jerry BEST DRIVERS BEST DRESSED Pat and Jerry Ronnie and Debby 26 BEST ALL AROUND Mary Ann and Lyle SMALLEST AND TALLEST Cindi and Denny BIGGEST FLIRTS QUIETEST Shirley and Connie Murrie and Cheryl 27 IvJj T, T ‘ .r.--- ' ' ' -..... :'rov; crk nn I a y: ;rJ :«: -«c ri: y;iC t o: ;r i :r' ic :f. i vri‘: :‘.vri‘: '- .v.v. i'-v iW‘' N H rv Ilf I U L K I A fiC I I sm SENIOR SNAPSHOTS ....r---------------------------............ MR. MICHAEL DERR No one can say that Mike Derr’s life lacks variety. In the winter months he teaches Spanish and English here at Whitesville Central; in the spring and fall he occupies himself with baseball as a member of the Chicago Cubs chain. He is now in his second year of teaching, and just recently finished with his second year of professional baseball. Derr, a 1969 graduate of Mansfield State College, was born in Milton, Pennsylvania, a community situated in the Williams- port area. Once signed by the Cubs, Mike went to Huron, South Dakota, a member of the Class A Northern League. He did better in his last summer’s baseball by making an average of .330 hitting but tapered off onto .283 the last two weeks. In March, Mike will report to the Cubs training camp at Scottsdale, Arizona. The Class of 1971 would like to thank him for his helpfullness in classes and out of classes. He has made Whitesville Central a better place to be. Our Thanks To THE BOARD OF EDUCATION To End With OUR THANKS TO THESE PATRONS WH1TESVILLE Hopkin’s Lumber Co.
