It is minutes and seasons and years. It is giggles and tears, Enjoyment and things we're afraid of. It's the stuff we are made of. Time is Christmas and measles. It’s birthdays, and marking the wall To show us how tall We've grown since the birthday before. It's what we remember and what is arriving or going. It's a wave which is flowing Past an invisible shore. Changing from minute to minute. It's a sea. And we're all swimming in it, Borne along, borne along Toward lands which we wait to explore. And though we can't touch it Or hear it (Or even come near it). We can save it or use it or measure it. And if we are wise, We will treasure it. With this thought we proudly present the 1967 WYCENLAN. DEDICATION FLORENCE CORNELL In 1929, Mrs. Cornell was gradu- ated from the Ceramics College of Alfred University. She began her career in Whitesville as a Music and Art teacher. After five years she went to Valley Stream, Long Island, where she taught for the next two years. She then re- turned to Whitesville, married, and has remained here since. Mrs. Cornell has been an art instructor for a total of 36 years and four months. In a variety of refresher courses, she has attended the colleges at Buffalo State, N. Y. U., Columbia and Syracuse and has taken extension courses at Chautauqua. She has traveled extensively and hopes to tour Europe next Fall after her retirement. Each pupil under Mrs. Cornell's direction has benefited from her insis- tence upon neatness and accuracy. All, regardless of artistic ability, have learn- ed practical skills which will continue to be a great asset. Her ready smile and friendly manner have brought her a host of friends among W.C.S. alumni. To express our appreciation, we, the Senior Class of 1967, dedicate this edition of the WYCENIAN to Mrs. Cor- nell. Thanks To: SHAY'S RED AND WHITE STORE FRONTISPIECE ACTIVITIES Page 3 ADMINISTRATION SENIORS Page 15 UNDERCLASSMEN Page 31 12 3 4 ATHLETICS SPONSORS Page 57 We, the class of 1967, wish to dedicate this Wycenian to Connie Rae Plaisted who became an alumini in 1965. The following year she stayed with us as part of the school personnel. She remained in this capacity until her tragic accident in 1966 took her from us. Connie’s casual acquaintances will always re- member her cheerful smile and shy manner. The happiness she brought to many of us will never be forgotten. She will live with us always a memory as fresh and alive as she was. CONNIE RAE PLAISTED IN MEMORIAM TOMMY E ISTER We also lovingly dedicate our book to our former classmate, Tommy Eister, who joined us in the first grade. In 1958 as a third grader he met an untimely death. Our memories will linger on, especially do we remember the blonde-haired boy who was always smiling and ready to do things with us. Thanks To: JIM’S TEXACO SERVICE FROM MR. BREWSTER’S DESK Congratulations to you, Class of 1967. I would like to compliment you on your theme. Time. How very appropriate, indeed! When we think how important time is to each of us, we realize all else of value must come to us through the medium of time and its passage. One of the unique attributes of time is that we cannot borrow it. We can use or waste only the present moments in which we are living. The future is kept in store for us. But, what we do with the present moments always affects that future. Neither, can we bring into being time once it is past, nor can we borrow moments of time to relive or change them. We can only recall them. This is where a Yearbook contributes so much. May your WYCENIAN be to each of you a means of recalling some of the most mean- ingful and valuable years of your life. Thanks To: MURRAY RICHMOND'S GARAGE BODY SHOP 22 H15TORY - CLASS OF 1967 Time is more than the pa: age of minutes and seconds. It is also the passage of a person's education to the conclusion of th I we first embarked on this Ion; d from the beginning of a senior's process. At the tender age of five, oyage through time. Elementary School as like a slow moving clock p i ing which time many of us suffered bloody noses, crushing love affare ; and sharp reprimands. The clock approached the halfway mark as e made our entry into junior high. During this time we endured some traumatic experiences, but we blossomed into young ladies and gentlemen. We were nearing the bewitching hour of our education by entering senior high school. We still suffered! We still endured! But by enduring we also con- tinued to learn the specified materials asked of us. Our Whitesville Central School clock on which our time has been recorded is now coming to a stop; but, in stopping, it also sets into motion the clock that will continue to record our educational time. 23 Thanks To: BATH PACKING COMPANY HOROSCOPE NAME SAYING NOTED FOR AMBITION PROBABILITY Michael Ainsworth Mike What be it? Sharon Sherwood was chosen president; Ann Flan- agan, vice-president; Diane Hallett, secretary; Mary Merrick, treasurer; Mrs. Pfeiffer, the advisor. Each member was assigned certain library stacks to read during the year. They have assisted on bulletin boards and helped make Dewey Decimal System Charts for Mrs. Pfeiffer's use in Library Instruction. Book cov- ers and briefolios were sold. For the first time in our school, on November 17, we presented 90 books at a Book Fair during Open House for sale to the public. A paperback book store was maintained for the students. They checked hundreds of books borrowed from other libraries. The duties at the circulation desk, checking magazines, and listing overdues have gone on as usual. The Whitesville chapter of FHA has 25 members including 11 new members this year. Our officers are: Diana Howe, president; Mary Merrick, vice-president; Shirley Sluyter, secretary; Sharon Sherwood, treasurer; Frieda Howe, Chapter mother; Mrs. Carlosh, advisor. The program for the year included the fall FHA rally in Wellsville with Sharon Sherwood, Anne Coats and Ilene Jacobs participating as models in a fashion show. In December, the members visited the Harrison Valley Children's Home and distributed gifts to each child. Plans for the year include a dance, mother and daughter banquet and attendance at the state meeting in Saratoga Springs. The ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION represents the Whitesville student body in sporting events and other school activities. There are 13 members this year. The officers are: John Hoppe, president; Diana Howe, secretary; Stephen Lewis, treasurer. They are all seniors. Coach Sweeney is the advisor. The association helps pay for gym uniforms and other clothing bought by the student body. It has bought sweatshirts to be sold all year round and will have a candy sale during the spring. It has promoted a donkey bas- ketball game for the enjoyment of the students this year. The VARSITY CLUB was originated this school year under the direction of Coach Sweeney. Ten sport conscience boys comprise this organization. The purpose of the group is to earn funds with which school jac- kets are purchased for the varsity boys. In order to reach our goals we raised the necessary funds by selling sta- tionery, Christmas hounds, candy and sponsoring a dance. The function of the STUDENT COUNCIL is to promote student activities and help the students to under- stand better our school system. The council elected the following officers: Sharon Sherwood, president; Mike Ainsworth, vice-president; Kay Dibble, secretary and treasurer; Mr. Stonemetz, advisor. As one of our projects we decided to compile a student handbook to be given to the students on the junior and senior high school level. This book would contain the alma mater, the school song, a list of the teachers with respective rooms and other helpful information. At the conclusion of the school year, the council will hold an Honor Assembly. This assembly will enable those students, who have achieved outstanding results in scholastic endeavors, sports and music, to be recogniz- ed by their fellow students and to be rewarded for their accomplishments. The purpose of the CHEERLEADERS CLUB is to instill in the student body an interest for the basketball team and to encourage the students to support their team at the games by taking a responsive part in the cheer- ing. In fulfilling this purpose, they hope to be worthy of representing their team and school. The cheerleading squad consists of 13 girls. The varsity members chose Kay Dibble as their captain and junior varsity chose April Folts. Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Loughlin are the advisors. One of our projects has been selling candy at noon to raise funds for purchasing jackets. We have had pep rallies before the games to encourage school spirit and to teach the cheers to the students. These rallies have proven very successful in increasing our students’ spirit at our games. 48 Thanks To: COATS DRUG CO. BASEBALL-1966 The Baseball Team enjoyed one of its finest seasons last year. We finished with a 7-3 record which was good for second place in the league. Therefore we had the opportunity of participating in the sectional with Lima where we were beaten in a tight 3-1 ball game. Coach Sweeney anticipates another fine season this year with the return of some of our veteran players. 55 Thanks To: BABBITT POLE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY WCENIAN STAFF Mrs. Mahoney Editor...............................................Sharon Sherwood Photography..............................Diana Howe, Lamonte Ezell Circulation............................................George Slack Business Manager.......................................Mary Merrick Art....................................................Stephen Lewis Sports....................................................John Hoppe Typist.................................................Eddy Matteson Advertising..............................Jerry Smith, Shirley Sluyter David Denhoff, Charles Bledsoe Mrs. Viola Mahoney Junior assistants: Kay Dibble, Nancy Carlosh, Leah Hunt, Donald Pen- syl. IN CONCLUSION In tracing the history of our WYCENIAN we discovered the first yearbook was published by the senior class in 1941. Robert Caldwell was the editor and Mrs. Pfeiffer, the advisor. In the meager beginning it had a paper cover, stapled together, and snap- shots were pasted in each after the pages were printed. In contrast to our circulation there were only fifty copies complied that year. A lapse of two years was seen before another Whitesville Senior Class published a yearbook under the name of OUR CREST. The 1944 edition was similar in all re- spects except for its size. The 1945 volume was known as the WYCENIAN, a name used through the years. The name was suggested by Luke Wilson's sister, Dr. Dorothy Perkins, who was a former ceramic teacher at the University of Massachusetts. The “Wy” is the take- off of the word Whitesville, “cen” is the abbreviation of Central and “ian” was added to complete the word. In checking through the yearbook, we find Dorris Pfeiffer was advisor for twelve of these years and deserves much credit for a fine job. Other advisors of previous years were: Marion Vanderhoff, Edward Brewster, Pearl Malone, Phyllis Rigby, Sherman Cross and Viola Mahoney. We, the Wycenian Staff, are proud to submit this twenty-fifth volume for your approval. We believe that without the diligent effort of all the staff members this year- book would not have been possible. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Mrs. Mahoney, our advisor. Our main objective has been to make this book an accurate picture of the indi- viduals, clubs, teams and events which have made 1966-67 school year a memorable one. We sincerely hope that the 1967 WYCENIAN will be treasured and looked at again and again in the future years. The Staff AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS 61
