Our staff has used the similarities between School Life and Army Life as the theme in our yearbook. These last four years in hi$i school have been the founda- tion for our future success. As we seniors of '58 go through the doors of tomorrow, we stand on the threshold of accomplish- ment. It is up to each individual to march confidently into the Battle of Life . In the years to come when we are striving for victories we may, throu i these pages, recall our many close companions in their willing endeavor to compose this book of pleasant memories. - Richard Buchholz 1 DEDICATION — 1st Row-Gary Empson . 3rd Row-Eleanor Dodge Mary Slack-Literary Editor James Chase Claudine Jones Sherry Pritchard Leah Kear-Subscription Manager Erma McAllister Marian Hallett-Art Editor 2nd Row-Ralph Baham-Advertising Manager Gordon Hallett Richard Dibble Mrs. Pfeiffer-Advisor Lloyd piaisted Vaughn Buchholz Shaun Baker-Sports Editor William Loughlin-Business Manager Richard Buchholz-Editor-in-Chief Helen Plynn-Photography Editor Carole Empson-Literary Editor Boneta Margarum James Ellison Clair Golish Robert Wildman-Advertising Manager WYCENIAN STAFF Just as officers in the Army must command their men so must our administration command the students in WCS as shown by Mr Brewster performing a daily routine task. 7 JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF BOARD OP EDUCATION Seated: Prank Rigby, Lera Coleman Standing: John Slack, Edward Brewster Harold Van Dyke, Walter Planagan Lucille Baham Secretary COMMANDING OFF Edward Brewster Principal 8 This entire page ia sponsored by the WHITESVILLE G.L.F, a 71 LIEUTENANTS Front Row Baok Row Helen Barney - Grad© 6 Anna Hurlburt - Grade 1+ Doris Pfeiffer - Latin, Cit.Ed. These past years in school may be called your basic training period Now you have completed this step and you will soon be serving in the front lines of life. How well you have mastered the fundamental skills and the basic information will be a factor in your success. However, a still greater factor will be the degree to which each of you continues to train himself in developing greater skill and in mastering more information. It is the desire to con- tinue your training, either in advanced schooling or on the job, as the case may be, that will best prepare you for the inevitable changes life will bring. Best wishes to each of you. - Edward M. Out of the original twenty-five first graders, only ten remain. They are: Carole Empson, Marian Hallett, Shaun Baker, Richard Dibble, William Loughlin, Mary Slack, Ralph Baham, Richard Buchholz, Lois Ordway, and Leah Rear. We spent second grade in the building that is now Waite’s Garage. Marjorie Leach left us and Lewis Slack, Helen Flynn, and the Williamson brothers joined us. Third grade classes were held in the building which today is George Probasco’s house. Charlotte Hollabaugh moved away and Caroljean Waite left our class. This year Leonard Waite was added to our group. We spent fourth grade back in our old first grade room. We were joined by Gary Empson, Lloyd Plaisted, and John Allen. We lost Jack Lewis. Our fifth and sixth grades were held in the new school building. During fifth grade we lost Eugene Robbins and the Williamson brothers. James Matteson joined us in sixth grade but left us in the seventh. Seventh through tenth grades were spent in the old school building. Thomas Ray and Ronald Seger left us. Erma McAllister became a member of our class. Our Freshman year brought many new privileges but also started to settle us down. We held a box social in the school gym and a skating party at Wellsville. Patricia Fay, Claudine Jones, Junior Stocum, and Gordon Smith left us at the end of our Freshman year. Robert Wildman and James Ellison were now included in our class, roll. In our Sophomore year we lost David Slack and Leonard Waite. Patricia Nesbit and Clair Golish were new members. We held a Sophomore Hop which proved to be very profitable. We also sponsored another dance. We spent the last two years of high school back in the new school building in the new high school annex first used in 1956. We lost John Allen and Patricia Nesbit in our Junior year. We held the annual Junior Prom and for the first time a Junior Play, Finders Creepers. Erma McAllister left us to be married during our Senior year. Thus concluded are 12 years of school at W.C.S. which we leave with heavy hearts. Richard Dibble Majors: Math Science Yr. Bk. Staff-1 . President-1 Vlce-Pres.-2 Student Coun.-1 Ath. Also Kathy Ransom and Janice Val- lerles entered the second week. The twenty-three girls and boys have progressed satisfactorily in all phases of our work and play. The boys enjoy the new sandbox on the playground. The girls prefer the swings and Climb Around. Our class enjoys the new toys and we appreciate the repairs that Mr, Strever’s class has done for us. GRADE ONE During November the First Grade studied the Life of the Early Pilgrims. In Art class we drew pictures of Pilgrims and Indians and made a Pilgrim Poster. We made a bulletin board scene of the Pilgrims in America, wrote experience charts, learned the poem, My Turkey and viewed many pictures of the Plymouth Colony with use of the Opaque Projector. We learned how the Early Pilgrims wove doth and braided rugs. Terry made an Indian bow and arrow. Danny found a rock and we painted 1620 on it. Dean made a replica of the May- flower out of a squash with pipe cleaner masts and white sails. We crinkled blue paper for the Atlantic Ocean. We Joined with the Kindergarten to help them celebrate the First Thanksgiving Day. The Kindergarten sang, Gobble, Gobble and a song of thanks. What a lot of fun we hadl How much we learnedl 2k This erftire page is sponsored by CHAPMAN-BURROUS GRADE TWO We started our activities on the first day of school in Sept- ember with 26 enrolled. By the second week, we had 29 with Eddy and Robert West, and Ruthie Ann Thompson having joined us. These three were with us for five weeks before leaving. In December Jimmie Baer became one of us, in time to take part in our Christmas Pun. Our assembly of Mother Goose Rhymes was enjoyed by the other grades. We had a lot of fun in putting it on. Our Second Grade has been one of work and fun that we shall look back upon with pleasure. GRADE THREE Our class this year has 23 members. There are 16 boys and 7 girls. We have two new members, Hazen Pratt and Charles Bledsoe. Many children have been ill with the flu, but we still have six with perfect attendance. We are enjoying our science classes and have had many exper- iments with magnets and electricity in using our new science kit. We had fun at our Halloween Party playing games and eating all the treats we had. At Christmas we all helped decorate our room and the tree. We had a party and everyone exchanged gifts. It was lots of fun. GRADE POUR The Fourth Grade has 32 pupils. Dick Chamberlain left us early in November, but we gained a new pupil, Norma Stanford, who came to us from Wellsville. One of our first activities was becoming familiar with some of our wild flowers. Each pupil gathered several kinds and brought them to school. Some pupils pressed and mounted the ones which they gathered. Another activity which occupied much of October was the study of the Iroquois Indians. The pupils made booklets in which they summarized some of the Important facts concerning them. We gave an assembly program in November. The theme of the part presented by the pupils was Flowers and Plants. The other part of the program was a film, Johnny Appleseed. In Social Studies we take a brief look at a cross section of the United States. We also study the home life of people In typ- ical regions of the world. We have done many interesting projects in Art including painting, paper cutting, free-hand drawing, and working with crayons. We had several new library books which we enjoyed very much. GRADE FIVE In September there were 32 in Fifth Grade. We were glad to welcome Kent Wentling from Wellsville. Madeline Thompson left us in October. Alton Stanford moved here in November from Wellsville and Patricia Chamberlain moved to Genesee. There are fourteen in our room taking lessons on musical instruments. At Halloween we had a party and at Christmas we exchanged gifts and had a tree in our room. We also enjoyed many birthday treats. We packed Red Cross boxes for over-seas and many pupils contributed to the Junior Red Cross. We have a Stamp Club in our room. It is directly across from the Art Room. Our group numbers twenty-six. There are eighteen girls and eight boys. Our interests have been varied. We are enjoying Mr. Cretekos on Wednesdays when he assists us with our science problems. Mrs. Buchholz has helped us to understand the value of good health habits. At least half of our group are taking music lessons. A particular problem in Art that interested us was the Indian blanket design. We are grateful for the privilege of borrowing books from the high school library. This has helped us to improve our reading. On November 25 we presented an assembly program with the theme of Thanksgiving. This was followed by a movie, God s Wonders in Our Own Backyard. The following evening we repeated the program for the P. T. A. We are having a busy year. In addition to our regular work we are learning the Importance of working quietly, cooperating, and sharing responsibilities. Our village of Whitesville on a mile-long but narrow plain is pro- tected by the hills of the Allegheny Plateau. We know thoughts of just such a view as this must have been often in the mind of many a man away in service. So will it always remain in our memories. Here are the homes of our people and our most loyal sponsors. We thought this vista a most fitting picture to precede our list of patrons. Our businessmen and friends have financially made this annual possible. We also thank the near-by community of Wellsville, the shopping center of Allegany County. Many from our town earn and spend a great deal of money in Wellsville. Consequently, they have reciprooated by supporting our Wycenian. We thank you all.
