We realize that much more could have been ac- complished, but undaunted, we look to the fu- ture to see the fulfillment of all our dreams. As we of the class began our voyage in September '40, with Mr. Vernon Moore as Sponsor, we looked forward with expectant faces to a future filled with happi- ness. The years were filled with many joys and small woes, a few of our classmates fell overboard, but oth- ers joined our group. When we first began high school many began to realize that we were traveling on a nev- er-ending sea of learning, for we do not stop learn- ing when we have finished high school. We began to weather gales and storms of algebra, science, and Eng- lish at the very beginning of our Freshman year. Our Sophomore year filled us with greater knowledge, and we learned to assume some of the responsibilities due us. As Juniors our duties to the school and to other classes began. During this period we received our class rings. We also raised money for our Junior- Senior Banquet by sponsoring an Amateur Hour in the school auditorium. Memories of these happy events will never leave us. One of our classmates, Wilfred Breeding, has al- ready left us to join the Marine Corps, but we have had his comradeship through almost four years. We are looking forward with eagerness but with a little regret to that day when we shall be prepared to take that greater voyage into life. First we order and direct, as a united body, that our sponsor, Mrs. Brooks, for her willing efforts and great in- terest in boys and girls, have our heartiest gratitude and appreciation for her understanding ways in guiding us through ' 1 our senior year. Second we wish to leave our personal belongings. There- fore, I do hereby set forth the personal wills of the indi- vidual members of the Senior Class of l945-44. Cleatus Carter bestowes her basketball talents upon Ann Lynn McCravey and her wavy hair to Minnie Whited. Joe Woods receives the chemical knowledge of E.O. Lane, 8.180 the leadership of Jesse Shipley. Carl Harmon wills his debating skill to Ernest Lee. Jean Williams wills To Madge Seals goes erine Orrick's hair bows Martha Ann Williams Norma Jean Rhea and to Minnie Whited. J.P. Jones, Johnnie leave to Clyde Newberry, her love for the boys to Inez Turner Helen Dodson's chewing gum and Kath- leaves her temper with Dorothy Long. SENIOR CLASS POEM Whitesburg sends out a class every year This one is fifferent, listen here, Ours is a class twenty-nine strong But we are, indeed, a happy throng. One of our number to the Marines did go, He's still one of us, don't you know. By the name of Johnny we are particularly blest A fat one, a lean,one and Johnny, the pest. One of the Jones boys, named J.P. And a small little fry named Pee Wee. You never get lonesome nor even blue When these guys are around I'm telling you. Just two Katherines, an Orrick and a Brock Nope, there ain't another in our flock. We have two Williams gals, Jean and Martha Ann Try and beat their looks if you can. We have two Lanes, Mary Jane and E. O. We'll never forget them wherever we go. Elizabeth and Cleatus, both pleasing to the eye, You can bet your life they rate sky high. Then come Pearson and Price, both tiny and neat, In charming ways they can't be beat. Next is Blanche with efficiency as her goal, And with a smile for both young and old. We have Jesse and Carl, both favored with looks, Not only that but they're good in their books. Yes, there is a Thomason by the name of C.D. A very fine lad you'll find him to be. For three fair ladies there's Norma Jean, Betty In Ugetting aroundu they do quite a lot. We have Frances too, a cute little lass, Fond memories of her will never pass. To win sports is Helen's and Beulah's intent, Because they always take part in every event. We have a Virginia Loudy and a Whited one too, Who have proven to be both kind and true. In the fall of 1942, a Freshman Class, over thirty strong, climbed the steps of old W.H.S. The spring before we had been proud graduates, but that fall day we realized we were only lost, green Freshmen. But soon our common burdens and troubles made us a strong united class. This year the girls felt a closer bond of friendship when they were at last included in the Annual Girl Reserve Best Date Party. We entered the second year of our high school days with higher hopes and more definite in our purpose. This year we had a contest between the high school classes in buying defense stamps. Our class won and was given a delightful party by Mrs. Newman. We also had our Girl Reserve Party and in the early spring our English teacher, Mrs. Frank Moore, went with a group of us to Lloyd Kirkpatrick's Spring on a Weiner roast, where we enjoyed a very nice evening. When this year, our third one came around we climbed the steps for next to the last time. We realized for the first time, our school days were drawing rapidly to an end. This year we resolved to try to become better all-round students. As yet we haven't given any parties, but we are looking forward to the Junior-Senior Banquet the last month of this school year. We are also impatient to start on our class play which is scheduled for the first of March. Patricia Smith CLASS POEM when we were Freshmen we hardly knew Which way to turn with our little few. Ruth Ballard SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY The Sophomore Class of 1944 began to travel upon the highway of intellectual attainments ten years ago under the direction of Miss Eileen Ruble and Miss Emma D. Smith. As we have pursued onward on our destined course, facing the temptations and difficulties of life's early pathway, we feel we have carved upon each mile stone that which will serve as a guiding mark to those following in our footsteps. When we entered high school, the Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors with their traditional feelings of responsibility which characterize their classes, felt it to be their duty to impress upon us our lack of achievements and intellectual efficiency. This they did well. We feel proud of our re- cord in the Freshman Class. Juanita Franklin received the Scholarship medal given by the American Association of Uni- versity Women. , And now as Sophomores, we have supported the various ac- tivities of the school, being represented in the various A clubs and in athletics. Ruby Bledsoe was selected as Carni- val Queen and Wayne Haun as King. We realize that we are journeying on and that time is passing swiftly. Only by our past record may be judged the future. The Sophomores are looking forward to the next two years as years nobly spent in upholding the honors and unstained reputation of Whites- burg High. It is our highest aim to hold our burning torch high in order that it may gleam back upon those who are treading along the dreary way of life's testing ground. We are rising upward together, bound in friendship and having the destination to be the best Senior Class that Whitesburg High has ever had. Some of us had been dreading high school as we thought we would be expected to effect suddenly in some miraculous way a transition from childhood to the sophisticated air we had observed in some upper classmen. We were relieved how- ever to find that the only changes our teachers expected were, less giggling and play and more serious thought on pre paring ourselves to take advantage of future opportunities. ,Our class is made up of seventeen pupils from Russell- ville, one from Bradley, one from Bulls Gap, the remaining seventeen are graduates of Whitesburg Elementary School. The Freshman Class realizes that today is a preparation for tomorrow and that education is the best defense of our country. We want to strengthen our nation by securing the right education, unless our government serves notice that our services are more urgently needed in this national emer- gency. The next three school terms will find us making the most of our time trying to make the most of ourselves at Whitesburg High School. This is no time to waste time. Jo Ann Stubblefield CLASS POEM When we started to school at W.H.S. There were thirty-two in the Freshman Class. We didn't know all of our class right then, But we soon found each to be a friend. We had a good teacher as you all know, It came her time and she had to go To join.her colors red, white and blue, That stands for our country so brave and true. We got a new teacher, her name is Miss Hyatt, She teaches our English and she does all right. We like Mr. Pierce for a teacher too But as for Civics we're glad when it's through. Mrs. Lewis in Algebra class is so sweet, She makes us get our lessons and also keep our seat. Mrs. Murphey is so good in Home Ec. you see She likes for you to be as quiet as can be. There is Mrs. Brooks and also Miss Jo They say they're good teachers but how do I know. They're not my teachers but I hope they will be, So we will just wait until next year and see. Seniors and Juniors and Sophomores too Call us green Freshmen the whole year through, That doesn't matter because we don't care, It hasn't been long since their freshman year.
