T' 6 ' 1 5:3 1 723' ' , 51 N , , Bands are expensive. Yet the expense was well jus- tified at WCHS this year, as the band participated in almost every facet of school life, and also joined in community projects. In August the band performed at the Johnson County fair. Then fall was a busy time for band members playing at Franklin College's Homecoming, and presenting fivd home football game shows. After entering a marching contest in October, in which the gajorettes places first, the band sponsored Fall rolics in Novem r. In addition to dpmpeting in Solo and Ensemble contest, both district and State, the band joined in a Band Festival at Edinburg. Twenty-seven members were chosen for thejcounty honor band. Money was voted in this year, almost S400 for new programs were presented to elementary schools. After organizing dance and pep bands , the band also gave two floor sho is at basketball games. Money was vote-id in this year almost S400 for new instruments, and 3300 for white spats. Problems of raising the neededfunds were solved in a variety of ways. Selling magazines, birthday calendars, and candy around school and through the community, helped. The band also sponsored sock hops to raise money. Because of the ariety and extent of its projects, the band is one ofxithe schools most active organiza- tions. It is also jone of the largest, having 107 members. In school and community affairs this year, thei band has been a vital part of the schools spirit an involvement. . ist, ,VV 81 , E -Q ' 'xi as ,g5g.sgy gt . , ss . Whiteland High School was built in 1957, and since that time it has seen many improvements. Ad- dition of the Nortdh Wing, the academic hall, came in 1962. Two years later the Industrial Arts area was built and equipped. Then with the consolidation of the Clark and Pleasant Townships in 1965, came a new name-Whiteland Community High School. Construction of the music wing-choral and band rooms-came in 1967. The same year a new superin- tendent's office was built, and the cafeteria was remodeled and expanded. Along with improvements to the building, Whiteland has begiefited from academic expansion, also. Addition of French and Spanish, and installa- tion of the langua e lab, helped to broaden the cur- riculum. New eqpipment has been added to the audio-visual department, projectors and a close cir- cuit television w 're acquired for this school year. Plans for the futu e include construction of a materi- als center to accommodate books and library resources. , Through all the changes in Whiteland's history, the guidance department has helped and counseled each student. The lfaculty of any school is more im- portant to the quality of the academic program than any other changesi Accordingly, Mr. Ferguson head of the guidance department, will act as principal of the newjunior high when it opens in 1971. 34 l Today in ' f fiiila' K ' , f , g,. :gg-'gig-vgggggigq f ,,.,,f,,:-mf, f - - .::f:1i+ijs,E2 f ffl ' ' IfQ f555EEE'izmf'1 - ' Vgwivfm 7 .. , .. ,. 1. Active clubs throughout the school give the student a chance to help himself and his community. Clubs participated in a variety of activities. One of the most active clubs for boys, Hi-Y worked throughout the year decorating goal posts and collecting money for the Bucks For Books program for the WCHS library. In community Work, Hi-Y brightened Christmas spirits by collecting food for the needy families in the Stuff the Stocking program. For the first time this year, they also sponsored a Sweetheart Dance in early spring. Another organization, The Sunshine Society, was extremely active during the year decorating the teachers lounge, cleaning the chalkboards and can- vasing for the March of Dimes at basketball games. They also kept up the tradition of Daddy Date Night, the Ideal Lady and the Sunshine Dance. These clubs are not the only active clubs at WCHS however, for there is a lot to say about others such as Dramatics, FFA, FCA, Instrumental Music, Art Service and Key Club. These clubs represent the ideal club which participate in school life and helps the student be an active member of his school. ,Massa ...... V- ..,,.... . ., M : ff: -Lf.,-F.. Action varies--office duty to donkey ball Not only are today's students and teachers of WCHS involved in studies and clubs, but they are also involved in many other ac- tivities. Students perform in athletics, also in variety shows and dramatic presentations. They also perform duties in the office. Teachers show their disbelief in all work, no play as they take part in club sponsorships, donkey basketball, and spring fever. gswgmf . f I K 69 Yesterday envisioned a young and small school ex- celling in sports as each year passed. Today we have grown into a fine, well-adjusted school bound with spirit and pride in every area of athletics. This year's Cross Country team gave the fans a touch of pride for their team as they ran to a winning season paced by MVP Mark Coe. Today's football team crashed through lines to score in both points and pride. They were without yesterday's John Means and other top names, but they had today's new faces challenging the bigger schools, full of spirit and guts. The Whiteland basketball fans were disappointed with a losing season, yet pride and spirit were high as the team kept coming on strong. During the Sec- tionals, Whiteland clipped Center Grove one night and blanked the favorite, Franklin, out of the next race. Yesterday saw a very young wrestling team without experience or knowledge. Not until last year did the Warrior grapplers prove rugged competition as they peddled ahead in the winning column and captured the county trophy. Today the wrestlers maintained their conquering ability and became more popular as they came out ahead again to retain the county trophy. Yesterday brought track into success by setting records propelling today's team forward, encourag- ing them to surpass the old marks and gain recogni- tion for outstanding fetes. Tomorrow will give new teams a chance to better the records and add to the good name of the Warriors. ln the past the Warrior baseball teams took many championships. This year the Warriors decided to let another team take the title for a change, yet kept in the swing of things-over-powering their opponent in nearly every diamond match. Yesterday we saw golf as only a small sport set up for fun. Today's team enjoyed learning more about golf and gained pleasure in playing. Tomorrow may see bigger teams and more compet- itive ones as the Warriors of yesterday and today learn from experience and plan for tomorrow. 5- 'ff 7 :'P-?f.fe:iw ' - 'W Today in Sophomore Terry Cottingham makes a stretching attempt to get the ball. The Warriors grapplers worked in sweat during practice and won with skill during matches. The scoreboard lit up in favor of the Warriors eight times in regular season matches with only two loses, one by only one point. Ambition and desire dominated the Warrior team throughout the season, which grew from the pace set from past teams. The wrestlers become very close this year and each boy could feel the pain as well as joy and pride as a fellow wrestler came off the mat behind or ahead. The year before set a winning record kept by today's grapplers. Tomorrow the Warriors will strive to fulfill yesterday's accomplishment and pride. The grapplers of today were paced by co-captains Ollie Pointer and Roger Brown. Ollie received Most Valuable Wrestler also, Jim Suding won the scholastic award, and David Egbert was voted most improved. This also marked Coach Lyons last year of coaching after compiling an over-all 33-5 record. Senior Ernie Fields slips his arm around in a reversal attempt during a challenge match. . l The Warriors remained on top nearly all year long as this score against Greensburg indicates. Assistant Coach Parker has decided to keep in shape by tangeling with heavyweight Ollie Pointer. Bill Galloway applies the Uhurtsl' on his Greensburg opponent as he tallies another victory for the Warriors. GRN County Champs . . . The 1970 County Champions are . . . the Whiteland Warriors! Today's grapplers wouldn't let go of the county trophy captured last year as they placed five first in the tournament. David Egbert, Jim Suding, Dean Money, Roger Brown, and Ollie Pointer fought to the championship title, yet each boy was a champ combined as a team, Working and sweating together to make their team the best. Every muscle in every boy's body strained to Win. Each boy's heart held courage and ambition based on determi- nation to win. Their mouths were dry, their hours of practice numerous, and clothes seemed to expand as the season progressed. So much was given up by each boy wrestler so as to improve through practice and become a part of the team, doing his very best to support the part. Wrestling is individual effort and indi- vidual initiative, yet a strong team goal ac- complished by the senior members helping through experience and a close association by working together to get ahead. It could be destructive, liut more often it serves only to sharpen the wits! of ambitious students. American high schools preserve a class system which is renewed with every up-coming set of student. Seniors are the ideals and models of green underclassmen, juniors enjoy prestige over freshmen, and so on down the ladder. WCHS is no exception. Antics of seniors grow legendary when remembered and retoldg this year's class, who will repeat the cycle. There have been some changes in the system, though. Each new class of students is larger, and its members are more ma- ture and better educated. While in the system students learn not only pride in their class, but pride in the school as a whole. This means co-operating and working together among the different class levels. With five grades co-ordinated into one system, WCHS is a good example. Students learn an important lesson in life-how to work effec- tively with others toward a common goal. 94 1 S 4 fb., Today in , .fisasgi 'z , A .1-,,,Qf,sz1m: K ' , ,ffxi-f, xr- -: wir ' 4:5 , fx-Fw-,,,f ' 12,-.ezsazfffg 1, f+vuusi'42sg,,, , ' ,,,gf,,gQgf::: ,zzffgi 1 ' v 'L ' fv'Kw2s+,' uzieii M32-ffisi-. Six years rich with new experiences, and full of tests, have educated and matured us. Thousands of trivial little incidents, hundreds of momentous occasions, all are jumbled into a senior's memory. Homework not completed, unexcused ab- sences, library fines-the silly annoyances have memo- ries of trophies, elections, awards, and friendships. Today as seniors we prepare for graduation. Some of us have new jobs lined up, others plan to re-enter school next September. All of us know that we must prepare for a new life, experiencing a combination of regret, relief happiness, to repair the damage of neglected studies, we can clearly see the folly of our ways, Ca sigh or two and the guilt is easily put aside.D Tomorrow we begin participating in a whole new set of experiences. All the memories, the pain and joy of high school will combine as we prepare for new life in the world. The experiences we have gained at mhiteland will form the foundation of all we become in 1 e. Today, as Juniors, they saw a change from individ- ual home rooms to one large one where they learned to conduct business, discuss and make decisions over matters such as the Prom, class colors, and motto. The key to success is the door of opportunity was the motto chosen to encourage the class of 71 . The Juniors met with disgust and discouragement as they faced an economic crisis involving the Prom and Post-Prom. The poor attendance at the basketball games meant weak income in the concession area which the Juniors depend on financially. Through tradition the Juniors make all plans for the Prom and support it financially, the class of 71 assesed each class member in order to prove themselves worthy. Memories was chosen as the theme for the Prom constructed in a colorful atmosphere of light blue and rose red, the class colors. Tomorrow the Juniors will face even more respon- sibilities and confront important decisions as their high school days come to a close. PHOTO F I. Highlighting their year was knocking off the Seniors in the rough and tough volleyball game. The super sophs also showed a tremendous amount of spirit and enthusiasm over the other classes as they were awarded the spirit stick trophy for the school year. Much has been left behind but there is much to look forward to as the Junior year brings the Prom and just the good ole feeling of being an upperclassmen. 5-:cr , ., k , ,J an 4 --'K m,,,- . f g .. .. The new junior high will accommodate future classes, when this year's eighth graders begin their high school careers as freshmen. This year has been one of new experiences and inita- tions for eighth graders. Since they have already been introduced to high school life, freshmen year will find them ready to participate again in student council, pep session, sectional week, student body assemblies, and higher academics. From eighth grade to high school, tomorrow holds many days of happiness and sadness for the class of '74'. , x X' 1 T . QSM' v 1 wyim,'1'Q f it .7 f 123 Through the years, advertisers in the Whiteland area have supported WCHS in almost every facet of school life, especially athletics, stage productions, and publications. Each autumn, football programs and fall sports calendars have been printed. Free winter basketball calendars have been distributed among students, and programs have been printed for every home game. Dramatics projects have also received support from area advertisers. Furniture businesses have been co-operative in lending or renting stage props to the school. Journalistic publications at WCHS have always been generously supported by local advertisers. Smoke Signals, our newspaper, has continuously carried ads for area movies, drive-ins, and mechanic shops. Advertisers from the county have purchased ad space in The Warrior for several years. This year the support for our annual has been more rewarding than ever. We, in turn, have tried to show our appreciation by making the advertisement section of the 1970 Warrior, as interesting as pos- sible. By the extensive use of pictures with WCHS students as subjects, we hope to draw more readers to the ad section. Not only have local businesses become more responsive to our annual, but to other areas of our school as well. This long term co-operation between area shops and our school is beneficial to both. We can look forward to next year when advertisers will continue to support the school, and students will con- tinue to patronize the local shops. Q, ' 124 YT QM ' . 5. . fi A K X .
