THE 1971 CROSSROADS Whitehaven High School Memphis, Tennessee Volume XXXIII me sims Dedication This has been a school year filled with changes, but Whitehaven High School continues to excel in many areas of achievement. lt is with great pleasure that we dedicate this annual to two outstanding persons within our school socie- ty. Through this dedication We give rightful recognition to two women who are responsible for the continuance of one of the finest athletic programs for girls . . . Miss Nancy Cooper and Miss Betty Emerson. l l x 2 A TIME OF PARADOX From birth a child is a student of the world - of Na- ture, of people, of society. He finds himself at the center of a surrounding panorama of experiences. At times he will- be lost, discouraged by failures and disappoint- ments. At other times he will be' exalted - praised by society for his achievements and advances. School is but one system - perhaps the most impor- tant - whose changes influence the student. At school he is confronted with changes in courses and in person- alities. Last year's course becomes irrelevant and last yearis enemy becomes this year's best friend. The student studies the history of his world and draws analogies to his modern world. He learns of past wars and revolutions and compares them to the wars and rev- olutions in his society. He reads about the log cabins of a hundred years ago while he gazes through the window at an elaborate structure called the Mall. The student is taught by one whose wisdom and knowledge he respects. Yet, on the day when he too stands in this position of respect, he will still remain a student of the world. Thus, in this world of continuous change, the student never ceases to learn from the past - from his mistakes and from his successes. And this knowledge better equips him to cope with the changes in the Present and to seek for their improvement in the Future. 'fini J fu - f -iff H!
