F O O T B A L L The Tiger grid squad of 1948, starting the season with only three returning lettermen, and playing one of the roughest schedules a Tiger team has ever encountered, finished the season with three wins and seven losses. The small and inexperienced team was led by Bud Martin and featured Howard Gober and Norwood Street, two small but hard running backs. The line was led by Bill Dalahite and Ray Whitington, two of the outstanding linemen in the county. L. Huffstutler and Jack Garland. A1- though losing the entire starting team of '48 the Tigers lost only two games in the league fray. This, however, was only good enough for the runner-up pos- ition. The prospect of a championship team is shown for next year with the return of Jack Garland, F. L. S. U. great, and led by Bill Neff, Jack Wilson and Norwood Street, went through the season without a defeat and were crowned District Champions by scoring more points than all other teams in Shelby County, In the two weeks that followed, the Tigers were named champions of West Tennessee, and during the next week they were declared track kings of the state by defeating Knoxville High, East Tennessee champs and the defend- ing champions, Kingsport. For next year, Coach Ferguson will have return- ing such cindermen as Jimmy Tom, Bobby Holley, Bill Dalahite, Bill Jackson, Donald Ransom, Harry Edwards, Bill Ferguson, Bud Martin, Gene Hopper, Ed Ikerd, Bill Lester, Howard Gober, Richard Cook, F. L. Huffstutler, Ray Whitington, Bobby Dixon, Tommy weaver, Bill Hole- brook and Charlesr Ketchum. The pitching staff is led by little left-handed Jerry Alsup, who was sensational in last year's American Legion race as he led Whitehaven to the runner-up position behind state champions C. B. C. The infield is led by Jack Garland and features Bobby Walsh, Rex Wilkerson and Ben May. This year there are six of these classes which include ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students Besides learning to play softball, as shown above, the girls have studied physiology and anatomy in Health classes and have learned various steps in several dances--the waltz, foxtrot rhumba, tango, and square dances. Mrs. ertin is the teacher, having come to Whitehaven this year to take the place of Miss Books. Before graduating, each girl in high school is required to have one credit in this course--receiving one-halt credit for each year she takes it. .E EE Em.
