Whitehall reaches state semi-finals Go for it The Zephyr varsity basketball team, coached by Dick Tracy, finished its season as PIAA Boys AAA Eastern Pennsylvania State semi-finalist. In state competition, Whitehall first defeated Central Dauphin 57-41. They moved up another notch when they defeated Bensalem 65-51. This was Whitehall’s 30th straight win. Whitehall finally met its match in Springfield-Delco. The Zephs fell behind by six points, and the score stood 28-32 at the final buzzer. In district competition, Whitehall beat Pottsville 60-47, then liberty 56-45. Only Dieruff stood between Whitehall and the district crown. With 6’7” senior Wes Wright scoring 20 points and outstanding junior Scott Coval adding another 15, the Huskies fell to the mighty Zephyrs 72-52. Whitehall, a division one East Penn Conference team, also won the EPC championship. This is the first time a division one team has ever captured the top place. The Zephyrs played Easton, a strong division two team, for the championship and beat them 41-35. The win was especially significant since Easton was the only team that had beaten Whitehall during the season. The mighty Zephyrs ended the season with a 33-2 record. Wright and Coval were the top scorers on the team. Coval led with 412 and Wright followed with 400. Just before Christmas, December 23, when the Zephyrs played Northampton, Coval reached the 1000-career-point marker. Both boys were named to the first team EPC All-stars. The EPC Coaches Association chose Mr. Tracy “Coach of the Year” and chose Coval as the “Outstanding Player.” Wes towers 116
