The Lucky Liz, means of Todd's death, was named after his wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor. Arturo Toscanini, beloved conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra also met the inevitable Mr. Death, leaving the world of symphony immeasurably bereaved. ln Moscow, a young Texan took top honors over his many musical competitors. Van Cliburn, piano virtuoso, won the Moscow medal for his skilled tlngers, limelighting the United States and bringing music into world news. Shooting for the moon is not in the far distant future in this space age of l958. With Sputniks and Explorers circling the earth in ever widening orbits, men will soon know by experience the conditions on the moon. Offspring of the rush for space are such popular songs as One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater, which also marks so well the Rock and Roll craze which has American teenagers in its clutch. Because of the fast rise of Russia in the scientific world of man-made satellites, the United States has become acutely aware of its education problem, and more and more emphasis is being made on science and math in the schools. A Y lv s A KING WINTER REIGNS - All area schools in the Lehigh Valley were closed the latter port of February as snow came in downpours casting a blanket of l6 inches of snow on the area, while , 01 At Last! Whitehall was very proud and happy to be in the local news as the foundation of a long awaited, brand new high school was begun in a traditional ground-breaking program. The huge, modern building is scheduled to be ready tor the anxious class ot i960 to be graduated in its, as yet unborn, auditorium. At old Whitehall this year, students were forced to give up a tew precious school days as King Winter blew his blizzardy breath making transporta- tion impossible, and as an epidemic of Asian influenza raged throughout the community and the nation. Also locally marking i958 were the advent of the chemise dress, tooth-pick-toed shoes, and the re- populorizing of old tunes as Love Letters in the Sand, Shine On Harvest Moon, Dream, and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.
