GEORGE D STECKEL Principal Fifty years ago Whitehall like other secondary schools was concerned primarily with the prepara tion of students for college A selective process operated through the elementary and hugh school grades which eliminated those who lacked ability to succeed in academic fields of learning But the steady and spectacular influx of boys and girls who sought an education that fitted them principally for prevailing concept of a high school education As a result a broader choice of sublects has been introduced and the underlying purposes of secondary education have been revised Whitehall Township Jr Sr High School is no longer conceived of as functioning exclusively for the college bound student Instead it looks more to the social welfare of all individuals entrusted to its care and to their develop ment as persons Today we are takmg the position that education is an investment by society to ensure its perpetuation and progressive improvement that secondary educa tion should be universal in extent and that the curriculum should be based on the needs of youth and of the society in which they live We believe that the personal development of the individual In havior knowledge and ludgment is equally important as a goal of secondary education The history of the past and exposition of the present are interesting but the realization of these goals at Whitehall is important for it will result in even greater progress durmg the next fifty years George D Steckel l . . life and the pursuit ot a livelihood, modified the skills, ethical ideals, 6'm0fl0f10llZed C'ffllUCleS, be- 17
