Now that we have completed our high school days, we feel ready to step out into the world and let our successors take up our good work. Up to the present time our class has been the largest Senior class ever enrolled at Whitehall, and now on the eve of Commencement it is to be the largest that has ever been graduated. We have reached our goal, graduation, and while striving to achieve this splendid accomplishment, we have fared exceptionally well both scholastically and socially. As we are about to take this final step, we find that Whitehall has become very dear to us. In going out upon the highway of life, where we shall meet many obstacles which must be overcome, we shall always remember the teachings of Whitehall. KATHRYN FRITZ Gian gfisfory E, the Freshman class of Whitehall High, have turned our Hrst page in High School education. Now we are ready to follow in the footsteps of former Sophomore classes. ' In size we surpass all previous Freshman classes, and hope, too, that our united efforts for a bigger and better Whitehall High will prove record breaking as well. At the offset most of us were total strangers, but as the months sped by, a spirit of friendship prevailed throughout our class. Those of us who were athletically inclined found ample opportunity to parti- cipate in our varied sports program. All too soon we say farewell to a year Hlled with fond memories, which time itself cannot erase. Let us pause a moment to express our gratitude for the able guidance which we have received. Zz! WSG , 75 BOYS' CHORUS Jfusimf Orqanizafiom HIS year a Boys' Glee Club was organized. This musical group, as well as the Girls' Glee Club, entertained the student body with a few selections during the Assembly periods. The operetta, Tune ln, was given in December with a cast chosen from the four classes of the high school. This production featured several excellent dancing and singing choruses. The band and orchestra continue to grow larger and are on hand whenever the occasion calls for them. Our annual spring concert this year consisted of the operetta for primary grades entitled, In a Florist's Window, and also the intermediate operetta, The Early Bird Catches the Worm. 'kit Qramafic gjroqmm HROUGH this annual, the Director of Dramatics wishes to thank all who gave of their time, means, and talent to make the dramatic program of I938-I939 a success. The Case of the Squealing Cat was the first dramatic production of the term, presented by the members of the teaching staff of Whitehall Township. The play, a mystery in three acts, was written by Iames Reach. The plot is centered about Ezra Bancroft, a tyrannical, miserly old millionaire, and his millions. Early in the story he is murdered, so Whig, a Chinese detective, and Inspector Britt are called in to take over the case. To further the complexity of the situation another character is murdered. The plot is finally unravelled after three acts of fast and furious action. The month of April brought with it the presentation of the first Senior play entitled Dying to Live, written by Wilbur Braun. Chick Breen, in love with Sylvia Winlock, has had an innocent friendship with a girl named Estelle long before he ever met Sylvia. The appearance of two more Estelles in the plot of the story, setting matters into a terrible confusion, starts the ball rolling and it never ceases until the surprise finish at the very end of the Final curtain. This year, as previously, the Dramatic department sponsored a Lyceum program con- sisting of six numbers. It included: The Sorrentino Light Opera Co., which presented the Barber of Seville g Bud Waite, who lectured on the South Pole and the Byrd Expedi- tion, Still's Circus Marionettes-a program of wholesome entertainmentg the Pollard Players with their presentation of Barrels of Money , C. E. Iones with his Dancing Electrons and Mechanical Many and finally, Col. Worthington Hollyday with lectures and illustrations of the K'Land of the Vikings. Each program was of the highest educa- tional and entertaining value. The last Senior play was presented on May 26. It was a three act comedy-drama written by Nan H. Burns, entitled Keep on the Sunny Side. All who were present enjoyed a full evening of entertainment. 1939 4 7721- HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA f. .fift- Qyfzifefzaff gflqlz Scfzoof 3a1zJ IJir'c'4'tor. . , . . .MAE E. This was one of the largest groups in Whitehall history, hut the majority of this material was inexperienced. Although the season was not so successful as was hoped, the boys always had the fighting spirit even when losing. This was shown especially in hoth the Strouds- hurg and Lehighton games, when our boys, seemingly defeated, won in the closing seconds of the game. Seniors who will he lost through graduation are Sedora, McAdams, Breshina, Hrieinalt, and eo-captains VVavrel-L and Weider, all of whom are linemen. From the haekheld will he lost Steckel, Koehenash, and Rutman. Several good men have been developed during the past season, and prospects for the coming season are bright. v - v , is , 'H 1 0 I 13- I. 193 C9-39 Baskefbaff Season A-XRSITY haskethall practice started in Decemher with thirty hoys competing for positions. From these, ten men were selected, as follows: Mike liovac, lf: Gil' hert Stoudt, If: joe liochenash, l'.g Edward Galgon, li.: Carl Bershina, c.g john Anto- licli, c.: Russel llutman, tg.: Edward Daumer, ig.: VVayne Cressman, g.: Leo George, li.: and later on two more hoys were added-Frederick McNeil, li., and Allred 'l'inf dula. g. With most ol' the men having had some experience, the team enioyed a lairly successful season. Five seniors will he lost to the team, hut there are seven under- classmen with plenty of experience who are expected to show great things for next season. Mike liovac, forward on the team, although an inconsistent performer, re- mained with the leaders in the scoring of the league. He llrnished the season in third place. He is the only remaining varsity player lor next year. .iggt JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Xl liRIliNGli plus a great deal of aggressiveness paved the way for a very successful season. The splendid ability ol the team to back up Capt. Al 'I'indula's defensive playing, made it possible to win twelve and lose six games. Three games lost, out ol' the six, were by the narrow margin ol' one point, and the other three lost, not exceeding live points. The type of zone defense used was entirely strange at lirst to the players. However, after the first Iew games, the team improved considerably and played consistently throughout the entire season. Outstanding players were: Iohn Talotta, Ierome Merkel, and Steven Srrella, lorwardsg Frederick McNeil, Frank lirutchak, Carl Wescoe, guardsg Ernest Lapp and Mike Andush, centers. Hl'I'liHAI,l, HIGH resumed its logo baseball activities with the calling ol' practice in March. lfifty boys responded. Alter a liew weeks' work the squad was cut to Hliteen players. Several boys who performed especially well during practice were Russel Rutman, pitcher: Ioe I-lricinak and Ed- ward Weider, catchers: Ioe Galliua, Ioe Kochenash, and Gilbert Stoudt, outhelders. Several new and promising candidates were Donald Matthews and Mike Kovach, zd base: Stephen Strella and I.eo George, shortstopsg and lohn Talotta and Frank Iirutchak, 3d base. A schedule of nine games was arranged, the competing teams being Coplay, Nazareth, two gamesg South Whitehall, North- ampton, Catasauqua, Slatington, llmmaus, and Lehighton. Each year Hnds both the girls' and boys' gym teams larger and better. The boys seem to prove that the more difficult the stunts the better they can master them. The girls' team, this year, is destined to go down in the annals of the school's history, for they returned with high standing from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, where a state-Wide com- petition for athletic endeavors was held. The girls' gym team placed third high in their calisthenics drill, with 359 points, and second high in their dances, with 376.7 points. The girls' team is un- der the direction of Miss Haupt and the boys' team is under Mr. Forniciari.
