Sense of freedom still exists at Bay Any observer of the students at Whitefish Bay High School will easily see that the society pictured in 1984 does not exist at this school. The students remain individ- ualistic, free, adventuresome, and outspoken, and are encouraged to express their own ideas, opinions, and feelings on various subjects. All students feel a sense of freedom when they enter the schools doors, for they know that there is no Big Brother or Thought police watching them. 4 — Introduction

“I always feel like somebody’s The predictions of 1984: Have they materialized? Yes, as these pictures show, they do exist in certain areas of our life. As soon as a child enters this world, he she is immediately assigned a number — a Social Security number. As this child matures, it obtains more numbers that become vital to its everyday life: a driver's license number, a library card number, an insurance number, a phone number, street address, etc. ... Whenever this child enters a store or a bank, T.V. cameras watch its every move. In school, the people downstairs have the ability to push a button and listen in on the conversation that this child and friends are having. When he she goes to the bank, the child communicates with a computer to withdraw money. The grades received for schoolwork are stored in a computer. People the child doesn't even know have information on its life at the push of a computer key. Orbiting satellites miles and miles above the earth use telescopic lenses, so powerful that they can read newsprint that is lying on the ground, to see what is happening on earth. Is there evidence that the predictions of 1984 have come true at WFBHS? As you read this edition of the Tower, you will undoubtedly decide for yourself. It is the opinion of this staff that, in contrast to much of the rest of the world, our school has remained relatively free from Orwellian intrusion. 6
