LETTERMEN TT NWS: Jack 1 nwaits Jack Crabb f 7 Ljo-Capiain C -C ' 0 upturn Co-Captain-Elect 1939 FOOTBALL ge group of lettermen returning, Coach Byers had high hopes for a good record. The Blue Dukes started their first season under their own lights against Messmer The closely fought and Messmer was bl . game was ' a e to capitalize on a safety to win by a 2-0 margin. The following week, after starting slowly, the Dukes trounced Country Da i th ' ' at So h i y n e second half. Opening the conference ut Milwaukee the team was on the short end of a 14-6 score. The homecoming followed with Wauwatosa supplying the opposition. After a hard fought battle Whitefish Bay was on the short end again.' The score was 7-0. Then came the game with the 1938 Champs, Waukesha. The Dukes played a swell game, coming out of it with a 7-7 tie. It was in this game that jim Butler, the Bay's star fullback was injured Next h boys set themselves to spoil West Mil k ' , . , t e wau ees homecoming but had to be content with a 0-0 tie in a game that was played in inches of mud. The following week the W 'l - ' The ' d W ' est Mi waukee game was duplicated. y tie est Allis 0-0. Then the team let down and lost to Cudahy 14-7. With a week and a half in which to prepare, Whitefish Bay got ready for the Annual Glory Trophy game with Shorewood. The Dukes were in the lead toward permanent possession of the trophy with 3 wins to 2 for Shorewood. The game was played at Shorewood. In the second quarter Shorewood scored but failed to make the extra point. Here the half ended. Starting the third quarter the Dukes' brilliant attack carried the ball to the 7 yard line. From there Matt Pahle and Bill Barnes took it over. The extra point was missed. Through most of the fourth period the ball changed hands constantly, until Whitefish Bay started a last drive, carrying the ball to Shorewood's ten. With two minutes to go, Shorewood held for three downs. But on the fourth, jack Crabb kicked a field goal from the 18 yard line. Shortly after, with the crowd in a wild frenzyg the gun went off with Whitefish Bay again on top 9-6. Because of this game the o l ' , n y game won in the conference, the team decided, with the approval of the whole school, that it had been a successful season. C0'C4Pfaiu BASKETBALL The '39-'40 basketball season could not be termed much of a success for Whitehsh Bay. Only at times did the Blue Dukes show enough spark to come through for Coach Nick Kuehl. The team had everything in height and potential ball handling ability, but a leader was lacking out on the floor. That latent ability came forth in the West Allis and Wauwatosa games. Looking into the future, Coach Kuehl made use of some promising Juniors most of the time. As of last year, he had only two lettermen returning, jack Hughes and Paul Opetz. Operz ended up the season being high scorer. jim Butler was second in the scoring column. His Irish teammate, jim Murphy, a really good defensive man, was up on top in the scoring also. The team missed Hughes during the second semester when he was no longer eligible. George Magaw and John Gucciardi didn't play as regulars but their services as substitutes helped the team very much. Licking Wauwatosa, however-which, by the way, was the first time in history that a major victory has ever been scored over this team -- was an accomplish- ment in itself. .lack Qrabb Bob Cook Pau! J 3 ,......, -.-.- ii , Jim Butler C0-Captain With nine lettermen returning at the start of the season, and with almost a hundred boys trying out Coach Wangerin foresaw another successful season. The Blue and Gray meet led to the selection of a sure fire team. The team received its first test in the triangular meet when they met Port Washington and West Bend here. They passed with flying colors, beating Port Washington's- Q22 with a score of 90. Next they met South Milwaukee. West Milwaukee and Cudahy for the Little Suburban meet. Though the competition was stiffer, they gave a good account of themselves, and ran a close second to South Mil- waukee. In the district Class B meet, Whitefish Bay had, as its chief competitors, the game three schools and being more carefully prepared, won first place. The team placed third in the Waukesha relays. Fully prepared, the boys went to Madison for the State meet, in the Class B division. Led by Co- Captains Bill Sigler and Wally Anderson, and taking five firsts, the boys won Hrst place over South Milwaukee by I1 Z points. This made Whitefish Bay the first Class B school to win the State meet three times. After the highly successful State meet, a customary let-down placed the boys in third place in the Suburban meet, though they trailed first place by only 42 points. The prospects for 1940 are ver winne ' y promising. With ten l rs in competition, and l ' be . ettermen returning, many of them sure-point a arge squad to pick the balance of the team f in the oiling. rom, a good season should wkwwatemmw- we - NI 2 ,- . vnu!-I jack Thwaitis 3 ---.EU-Tkoe Bernard Worn' W' KW! PRCDM CDF '39 All the action in Guess Again Galahad, Senior Class play for 1940, takes place in the course of one sum- mer's day in the lobby of the Edgewater Inn. The story hinges about Mr. Grimes, the proprietor, and Bill Douglas, a young college boy, who are trying to save the Inn from S. H. fSoak-em-Hardj Pratt, who threatens to foreclose on the Inn. Their trials and trib- ulations really become perplexing when two English- men, both of whom are supposed to be Lord Wiggleton, register at the Inn. To make matters worse, Renee Lamour, a Hollywood chiseler, appears on the scene and threatens to sue the second Lord Wiggleton for breach of promise, and it looks like all of their efforts to save the Inn have been in vain. But the identifica- tion of the first Englishman as the real Lord Wiggle- ton, and the other as his valet, saves the clay for Mr. Grimes and his associates.
