A CAPPELI L Last year our young A Cappella choir celebrated its second successful year by winning the District cham- pionship which automatically placed it in a tie for first place State honors! The choir is busy rehearsing for Pinafore to be given April 27 and 28. They have also been invited to join with the Lyric Male Chorus to give a concert in the Milwaukee Auditorium in May. These are just a few of the fine accomplishments of our choir, under the able leadership of Mr. Boyd. Truly, we have a choir to be proud of! SECOND BASS Athey, Howard . . . Beverung, Bud . . . MIGNONETTE In Mignonette, a story of a beautiful love in the old south, the Senior Class proved that Whitefish Bay students were ca- pable of portraying difficult emotions and of doing it so well as to hold the capacity audience breathless. More than one tear was shed in the audience that night. The colorful costumes and the gay setting provided an old southern atmosphere that charmed the audience. Mignonette has rightfully been acclaimed as the best dramatic production staged here in recent years. A few Senior and some Junior lettermen returning from last year served as somewhat of a nucleus around which was built a team that from all indications, would at least not be on the bottom of the final Suburban Standings. The first game of the season was with Messmer. Using an aerial offense, the team managed to win an easy victory which made the prospects for a successful season look even brighter. Perhaps the boys were over-confident, for the following Saturday spelled defeat at the hands of a splendid Country Day team. Crestfallen, the team put in a hard week of practice in prep- aration for the first Suburban conference game with Wauwatosa. Fighting doggedly under Wauwatosa ' s bright lights, the team played one of its finest games of the season. But reserve power will tell, and Wauwa- tosa ' s large team, coupled with injuries to three of Whitefish Bay ' s key men, proved too much for the tough but reserve-lacking Blue and Gray squad. After Wauwatosa came Waukesha and another defeat. But the Bays still had plenty of fight left, and proved this by taking the homecoming game against West Milwaukee, 13-0. After this timely victory, the team again seemed to suffer a relapse, and received crushing defeats from both West AUis and Cudahy. In neither of these games did Whitefish Bay score a single point. However, despite the many defeats, the season still held promise of becom- ing a success, for the game with Shorewood was yet to be played. 1938 CO-CAPTAIN Bill Sigler CENTER Roy Roska 1938 CO-CAPTAIN Walter Kamp Mh KSI t ■Of % ,33 i ;; 47 1. f 32-3 7 ' - ' . . s of Ci 41. _ • 3tdi. Goto Bufite In 1937, the Whitefish Bay team had recovered the Glory Trophy from the Shorewood trophy case by defeating Shorewood 7 to 6. And this year if there was one game the team wanted to win it was the game with Shore- wood, for the Trophy must be kept at Whitefish Bay. The annual feud between the two schools took place at night on the Shore- wood field, and was a fight from the opening whistle to the closing gun. Whitefish Bay chalked up the first score when All-Suburban Bill Sigler ploughed over from the one foot line. The try for the extra point failed. With only a few seconds left in the first half, the security of a six point lead van- ished as Shorewood scored and then added the extra point. Things looked even worse when, in the third quarter, a spectacular pass gave Shorewood another score. Though they failed to make the extra point, Shorewood still led, 13-6. However, Whitefish Bay put on a power exhibition and marched fifty-seven yards to score on a smash by Sigler. The tying point was secured on a plunge through tackle. With the crowd going wild, Whitefish Bay kicked off. The kick was taken behind the goal line and brought out a few yards into the field. But the runner changed direction and ran a few steps back into the end zone where he was tackled by Co-Captain Wally Kamp for a two point safety. And so ended another thrilling game in this friendly rivalry between Shorewood and Whitefish Bay. A week later, the team was defeated by South Milwaukee, but neverthe- less the season was considered a success. Why? Because the Glory Trophy is here for another year! 67 END George Magaw TACKLE Alan Robinson TACKLE Jim Butler TACKLE Paul Coulson DATE GAME Sept. 15 Messmer Sept. 22 Milwaukee Country Day Sept. 30 Wauwatosa Oct. 8 Waukesha Oct. 15 West Milwaukee Oct. 21 WestAllis Oct. 28 Cudahy Nov. 2 Shorewood Nov. 12 South Milwaukee WHITEFISH OPPO- NENT BAY 18 13 0. 15 6 6 13 22 19 39 13 19 HALFBACK Clarence Wittenberg END Ed Gauslin TACKLE Jack Crabb FULLBACK Bill Lepper B ■ H U B ■4i j 1 ■ H ■ 1 I I : ■■ 68 Butler, Priebe, Crabb, Hughes, Goelzer, Zivney, Sigler, Roska, Ettenheim, Opetz. 69 BASKETBALL This year was no exception when it came to where the Blue and Gray stood at the end of the season. Although the team didn ' t finish at the top they showed that they had the spirit to win. The team had a certain scrappiness and enthusiasm which made the players fight with a do or die ' - ' push. The spirit of co-operation seemed to be a thing above personalities, and gave the team an advantage which they have lacked in the past. Coach Nick Kuehl built up his team this year with these facts in view. He had only two lettermen returning from the previous season; his material was exceptionally good when it came to height, for three of the regular five were 6 feet or more. Coach Kuehl used five seniors most of the way this season. He used the scrappy Priebe, a first year man on the team, at one forward and Art proved his worth by ending up second in the team scoring. Rod Zivney, the nifty ball handler, was used at the other forward and ended just 3 points less than Priebe. Lanky Milt Ettenheim who was the star of many games was used at the center post. Milt was tied with Rod in scoring column and got most of his points on his rebound work. Hefty Bill Sigler was the leading scorer of the team and was a bear on getting rebounds off the opponents ' backboard. Bob Goelzer, the smallest of the five, was used at the other guard and was a fairly steady defensive man. These five boys, along with Junior Jack Hughes and Sophomore Paul Opetz, made their letters on the team of ' 38-39. BSl TO? bo .y 70 o- S-v, GAME W.B. OPP. GAME W.B. OPP. The first two meets, however, were lost to Custer and Shorewood, while in the trian- gular meet with Waukesha and West Milwaukee, the Bays placed second. After this somewhat slow start, the team came back strongly, placing first in the district class B meet and second in the Suburban conference meet. The outstanding event of the entire season came a week before the Suburban meet when the team took first place over thirty-seven competitors in the state class B meet. This victory gave us our second consecutive state class B championship. In winning this championship, a new shot-put record was made by Bob McCahill, co-captain and outstanding weight man. As a whole, the season was a great success. Though the Bay failed to win all of its meets with some of the larger Sub- urban schools, it nevertheless placed high and proved its su- periority over other schools in its class, by winning the state class B championship. The outlook for this season is very prom- ising. With nine returning lettermen and approximately 80 boys trying out, the coach should have little trouble in forming a team which should place high in Suburban honors, besides making a strong bid for the state championship. 73 Hughes, Meyer, Torrens. Chances for this year seem to be a little better, however, but the boys will be trying hard to beat off the handicap of inexperience as well as Old Man Par. TENNIS Last year the tennis team succeeded in placing only one man in the suburban tournament, diminutive Russ Wehe. The coming season holds no exceptional prospects, but several of the under classmen promise to offer stiff compe- tition in about two years. SKATING Jinxed by the tragic spills taken by their key men, the Whitefish Bay skating team had to be content with fourth place. However, the performance of freshmen Sturm and Parsons gave promise of better years to come. 75 , b a- ' f - Geubard, Hafemeister, Chapman. Ranson, Doering, Willman. , Lindsay, Blanz, Benish, Roe. VOLLEYBALL After three months of hard practice the volleyball team was forced to go to the tournament without their clever strategian. Coach Wangerin. Despite this handicap, the boys battled their way through to the finals only to be de- feated at the hands of the champion Waukesha team.
